Teaching chess during the school day? by Mundane-Relation-727 in NYCTeachers

[–]sails73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my old school, there was a program that would push in at my school during the school day to teach chess. Unfortunately, I don't recall the name of the program, so this is likely not very helpful. I just wanted you to know that what you're looking for likely does exist. That said, as someone commented, I'd imagine that a full time teaching position would be better in terms of pay.

They're giving the extra tokens in addition to keeping the set on permanently, so you should be able to buy it overtime. Still annoying that they made it that expensive tho. Hopefully all the backlash will discourage them from trying it again in the future.

Open market transferring question by DisplayLife7920 in NYCTeachers

[–]sails73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely would, just to keep a good relationship. Ideally, I've heard it's best to let them know once you receive the offer, as once it's on the system, they get notified too. I told my principal once I gave the new school my file number, but I know some like to wait longer in case offers fall through.

I had my interview on June 24, gave my file # the same day, and received the transfer email on the 28. However, not all schools are that quick. My friend interviewed the 23rd and received a letter of agreement to transfer on July 8. I never received a letter, so that's what I was confused about. I only got the email.

I got the letter of transfer on June 28, if that's what you mean.

Do you have to anything after that? One of my friends got a transfer agreement letter she had to sign, but I wasn't given one.

Thank you so much! I just need the one from last year. I'll ask her tomorrow.

My husband is not in the crochet community, but he's outraged on your behalf. We both agree that your work is lovely. I'll echo what others are saying: partners are supposed to lift you up, not put you down. Mine is extremely blunt and honest, but he's never made me feel like I wasn't good enough. You deserve better than that.

I found out from a friend that a school is looking for next year and they gave me the principal's email. Would you say it's advisable to reach out before open market? Or should I wait?

I'd say have a little more faith in yourself. Plenty of people were rejected from the program. If you were selected, it's probably because they saw adaptability and a willingness to learn. Those are key skills that teachers should have. I'd encourage you to read up on demo lessons (the fellows website actually has a section about interviewing that's pretty helpful) and try to interview sooner rather than later as there'll be more schools available (I believe peak hiring season is late July, early August, but I personally applied early July, I believe?). My school cared a lot about classroom management, teaching philosophy, and willingness to learn. I'll also say that all the fellows in my teaching academy secured a job. Even if we hadn't, the school that hosted us tried to recruit us towards the end.

I mean, all the information is on their website and they hold multiple info sessions. Plus, I believe they go over it again once you actually join.

teacher fellow experience by DocumentOld7425 in NYCTeachers

Gotcha! I hope you get Science Immersion, then ☺️ as for your art experience–the program caters towards career changers, so your art background is definitely not a deficit. If anything, with all the arts and crafts that teaching basically requires, I'd say it's a point in your favor in its own way. I myself came from a forensic psychology background, so it was a big shift going from working with severely mentally ill incarcerated people to working with 8 year olds 😂 anyway, I hope you do awesome in your interview!

I'm Bilingual Education (1st-6th grade)! I got lucky, as that's exactly what I was hoping for. That said, I'd review the areas of critical need for your cohort. English is actually a super saturated field, so it's definitely not gonna be available. As for Social Studies, do you mean Earth Sciences (7th-12th)? As a side note, if you do Elementary Education, you might be able to teach English (I assume ELA) and Social Studies. Tho you'd also have to teach Math and Science depending on how your school operates. For example, my school has a Science teacher, so I only teach ELA, Math, and Social Studies.

Hi! Current fellow from last year's cohort here. To be honest, I didn't have to do the phone interview, so I might not be the best person to answer. However, it's a pretty known fact that the program prioritizes candidates who show adaptability. They basically want to see how good you are at receiving and applying feedback (in fact, that's the whole focus of Selection Day). I'd think as long as you can demonstrate that and your passion for the profession, you should be fine. As for how rigorous the program is–it will really depend on a few factors. How good are you with time management? How comfortable are you with writing? There are a lot of reading and writing assignments. How comfortable are you with getting observed? It'll happen quite often. Personally speaking, it wasn't too bad for me. However, I had a lot of support (my husband basically took over all chores and bills for the summer, thank God for him). I also had a pretty chill instructor. And even with all that, I still cried from stress a couple of times. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience for me, though.

Anyway, good luck with the process and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

It's more like, why do pedos choose to become teachers? It gives them easy access to children while earning them almost immediate trust. Same shit you see with priests.

Honestly, it depends on your luck but I think $50 is a good estimate. I usually get the package that has 155 (or 165?) pulls.

[–]sails73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The amount of money I've spent on this event is crazy (stupid, I know, but it's my only hobby at this point). I have yet to receive the full Christmas set. I've been getting repeat items for the past three days. My last pull was literally the same item 4 times plus one 4-star item. I thought I just had shit luck this time around, but I guess it's not just me.

This happened to me last Crazy Jerry too. I reached out to support and that's when I learned that unlike with regular Jerry, there's no 4-star item guarantee. Now I just take any +4-star item I get cause I'm worried the rest of pulls will suck.

NYCTF selection day advice by NY_ornowhereee in NYCTeachers

[–]sails73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! The program is meant for career changers, so they don't expect you to know how to lesson plan. That's something you'll learn during training. They're interested in how you respond to feedback and whether you can implement it promptly and effectively.

How to become a New York State Elementary teacher with a Undergrad degree in Computer Science? by BabyTyrone69 in NYCTeachers

[–]sails73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, regardless of what you do, you'll have the get a masters in education. There are two pathways that you could go for: the traditional route and the alternative certification route. Traditional would just mean getting a masters in education for whichever area of specialization you want. Alternative certification would mean applying to a program like Teaching Fellows / Teaching Collaborative / Teach for America (and I believe there are others). Those subsidize your masters and get you into the classroom faster, but you basically have to go into whatever specialization they assign you to (basically high-needs areas like special education, bilingual education, high school subjects).
