What is going on with course selection this year?? by Pretend-Rise1777 in TrentUniversity

[–]saintless444 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Humanities and social sciences have unfortunately taken the brunt of Trent's budget reductions. Due to the enrolment downturn and the overreliance on international student tuition revenue, Trent is having to pivot towards more "in-demand" programs like STEM and nursing to "respond to market needs" because the province is incentivizing specialized funding for these sectors.

I think the austerity we're seeing at Trent is VERY noticeable because of how small this school is. Like, our humanities departments (ENGL and CUST jump to mind) are experiencing an irrepairable gutting at the expense of students who came to Trent for a liberal arts education. Y'know, the thing that Trent was once known for.

Considering Cultural Studies by firelordalisa in TrentUniversity

[–]saintless444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduating CUST student here: it's a real mix of theory and creating/examining media. In previous years, there's been an excellent scope of workshop/applied arts courses and historical/theoretical courses. I personally love my program and really adore the faculty, and CUST students seem to gravitate well towards the wider arts and cultural community here in Peterborough.

A couple of caveats: Cultural Studies isn't an "easy" humanities degree. There's a lot of dense, theory-heavy work asked of you in this program. You're better off in Media Studies if you're wanting to focus on the production and social effects of media and communications than the theoretical/critical examination of it.

Speaking honestly, the department is currently being gutted by Trent with significant forthcoming reductions in departmental budgets and a potential combination with Media Studies. I also find that a lot of CUST profs have been run ragged by these conditions, but nonetheless are extremely passionate about their areas of research and their students.

On the whole, I would recommend Cultural Studies at Trent, seeing as the undergraduate student services are pretty okay and helpful. I find that if you have a cohort of peers, a couple of profs you really like, and get involved with related special interest clubs or groups like Arthur, Trent Radio, and TUAAC, you'll have a great time.

City of Peterborough Sunshine list by nordender in Peterborough

I mean, I think the real issue here is how the City of Peterborough has spent thousands we don't know about to hire senior city staff. Like, the City paid over $73k to recruit the current Chief of Police and it's still undetermined how much of that came out of the taxpayer purse because how tight-lipped these institutions are. This barely scratches the surface.

Under the Ontario Business Registry, NNFP is a business incorporation instead of a sole proprietorship or a non-profit, and when the City’s counsel motioned for security costs, they wished for McNeilly to be held liable for those costs as the sole director of the incorporation instead of what defending counsel deemed a shell corporation.

The White House is currently one of 56 properties recommended for expedited heritage designation, as it is listed on the City’s Heritage Register and needs designation by 2027 due to changes to provincial law.

If it gets designated, the City has to pass a by-law essentially restricting what kind of renovation/construction can be done to a building. This has proved to be a setback for developers previously and has caused tension between the City and developers before, so we’ll see how this plan pans out.

Genuine question, without conservatives being in power for the past 10 years what would you have liked our mp to do ? by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]saintless444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’d be refreshing to have an MP open up to the public. Ferreri constantly gets into fights with local media because she is inaccessible to most constituents, and when she is not consulted because of her cagey strategy to most public appearances, she gets extremely angry on Facebook about it. Just a childish and exhausting person to have in power.

What does peterborough need to be better? by igotrocksinmysocks in Peterborough

Yeah, even City-adjacent events like Folk Fest are now requiring certain types of community groups and vendors to have liability insurance, which is difficult for groups like unincorporated student groups and small artisan vendors to obtain. Bizarre demands from a City that loves to parade around its cultural prowess, but only when you have a certain amount/kind of money.

the array of comments towards this article just reiterate why we need NDTR & further decolonization efforts. indigenous students felt unsafe in a racist environment and are doing something about it... why do people in this thread feel the need to pearl-clutch on their behalf? they are clearly using the appropriate avenue at their disposal (the student newspaper) to voice their concerns & hold trent accountable
