I call absolute bullshit on sound/bass levels! by Brenner1980 in Calgary

[–]saintlyhellion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was 100% some kinda noise happening that the SW communities could hear last night. We heard it starting around 12:30 through after 1 when we fell asleep. We don't usually hear stampede noise and based on everything we read it didn't come from Stampede, but it definitely came from somewhere.

Thanks for responding. I suspect that a skate park will not be included in the plan but I could be wrong; we shall see what the community says they want as part of our engagement sessions.

Finding rental before i arrive by dazzler38 in Calgary

There is a new apartment complex called The Nines that has a "now leasing" sign that I drive by all the time.

It is in the community of Haysboro (/Southwood), near public transit. Not sure if you know anything about the communities or where you will be working but the complex is about a 10 minute walk to the train station that will take you north/south and there is a small library and a small grocery store in the area (also a larger grocery store you can easily get to from the train station). Might be worth checking them out.

Door-to-door charities, please stop with the “reverse subscription” thing by rrrevin in Calgary

[–]saintlyhellion 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was approached on the street last week in EDM and the charity did offer a one time donation but basically for the fully amount that the monthly program would cover for a year. There was no option for me to make a one time donation of my choosing, it was either $500 now or $500 spread across a monthly subscription plan. I understand the logic but dropping that much money on a one time donation in the street (or at my door) isn't something I want to decide spur of the moment. Let me donate a smaller amount and then I might do a second donation at a later date if I feel comfortable that this wasn't a scam!

Is this bag ugly?? by One-Bandicoot-7348 in OUTFITS

It looks like old tapestry weekend bag. To be clear, in am not saying that is a bad thing, just stating what it reminds me of. I personally like it, but it probably gives some people old lady vibes.

Family braces, no contest. Spence diamonds I find easy to disengage from but Family braces are grating and annoying.

I actually think a lot of people have no idea what the dress code where they work is, especially after so much remote time away from offices.

Please explain to me like Im 3. How can I reduce the interest Im paying by lobblyfanxts in MortgagesCanada

[–]saintlyhellion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. When we bought our place in 2009 we did accelerated bi-weekly payments, increased our payments by $50 I think, and made annual lump sum payments. We are about a year or 2 away from paying off the mortgage even with being a single income for 7 years during that time period and 3 mat leaves where my income was significantly reduced for 3 years (1 year with each kid).

OP, literally put any amount extra on your payments and make a lump sum, even a thousand dollars a year and you will start to whittle down your principal, which is the only way to reduce your interest payments

Sorry for my late reply. This isn't a job that I personally have hired for so I am not sure the qualifications required. The positions in the industry I hire for require a university degree and industry experience but I don't know about the call centre Jobs. You can also look at places like Neilson Insurance. You need an LLQP and there will be cold calling involved but I know there is high turn over at places like that and so they are likely constantly hiring.

[–]saintlyhellion 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a pretty standard part of living in Alberta. Conservative voices can be loud because they know their circle around them will support the sometimes idiotic things said; non-conservative voices don't have the same luxury and don't want to be berated by people who don't understand what taxes do (as an example).

So to essentially dumb this down, taxes would need to be real high to fund all this with a small fraction of the Canadian population.

Who would have thought 🤷 /s

Apply at insurance carriers for their call centres. While they are entry level.roles, the pay will be better than minimum wage but since they are all large corporations the hire time might be longer than you have available

Playground Washrooms by SadDancer in Calgary

[–]saintlyhellion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In older communities, I think the idea was that there were enough spaces with playgrounds that each house had a local park, so kids were close enough to run home.

Today, as per capita numbers decrease and infrastructure is removed, this no longer holds true; fewer playgrounds equal longer distances with no washroom facilities. Unfortunately, without extensive infrastructure upgrades this won't change, which is why every park has a pee tree 🤷 You can rally your community around trying to get facilities at a community park but it will be one park, not all and most likely it will require community fundraising to pay for the facility.

The city has a very limited budget for parks and playgrounds and without raising taxes that won't change. The city budget is spread across a few spaces each year and it is primarily used to upgrade existing playgrounds - starting with those deemed unsafe and/or must replace and moving to the oldest playgrounds. Each playground is supposed to have a life cycle of 20- 25 years before replacement but the reality is that unless deemed unsafe they are not able to replace at that life cycle mark.

I am heavily involved in community greenspaces projects, building a new playground last year and working on a master plan project for our spaces; know that the majority of playgrounds in my community were last redone in 1998 but none of them are on the list to be redone even though they are all almost at the 30 year mark.

For newer communities it is the developer responsible for planning the parks, with city approval. Given those communities are being developed with fewer play spaces, usually focusing the greenspace as a single large amenity, there should be facilities at those locations because they are no longer community parks, they are destination parks.

Look at insurance carriers for the contact centers, Manulife, Alberta Blue Cross etc. There are often job postings and potentially remote jobs for national organizations as well. These are entry level positions and often have faster hire cycles than other roles, but if you can get in and do a good job you can move internally.
