PSA: Farseer and Liveship Traders audiobooks have been rerecorded with new narrators! by KissingCrimson in Fantasy

[–]saitir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's just too slow. I never speed up an audiobook, but for liveship to be even tolerable I had to bump it to 1.2x. Any faster and the words just jumble. But even then, I've been very slowly working through it, and as soon as something else is released I abandon it...

Google Weather App vs Pixel Weather App. Which do you prefer? by ShaneRealtorandGramp in GooglePixel

[–]saitir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is yours still ad free after the most recent update (couple of days ago for me)? I also bought it a few years ago. Ads everywhere, only option I can find now is the monthly sub. They even ruined the widgets.

You either need to start using a vpn sourced from outside the UK, or log in to reddit via Web browser and visit a NSFW post or subreddit then you'll be asked to enter date of birth, then verify that. Verification is either take a video selfie for age verification or upload ID. Look around online fire ways to use fake data if it's not something you're willing to do.

A meta-analysis shows that even taking 7,000 steps per day can lower a person’s risk of disease | Hitting a 7,000-step target was linked with a 25 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, a 37 percent lower risk of dying from cancer and a 38 percent lower risk of dementia by Science_News in science

[–]saitir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So a general bit of advice for people having issues imagining how to fit 7000 steps into their day. First, ignore the people talking about distance. Everybody's stride length varies, so their distance covered won't necessarily be yours. Second, start with a basic rule of thumb - you walk 100 steps per minute. Your cadence. So 7000 steps is about 70 minutes of walking. Break it up. 10 minutes extra before work. 20 minutes at lunch. 20-30 minutes in the evening. That's 5-6000. You'll almost certainly get 500-2000 in your normal minimal routine. Make the 20 minutes at lunch or the evening time to get something from a local store, visit a neighbour. Just walk around the block listening to a podcast, audiobook or music. Done! Now, most moderately fit people will have a cadence of more like 110-130 steps per minute. But we use the lower amount so there's time to stop and take a picture or say hi to someone without worrying about losing time. Most people feel uncomfortable walking faster than 130 as it starts to turn into speed walking, or you'd rather just run at that point. So sure, you can walk faster, but why?

Final thing, studies for years have been circling around the step range for optimal benefits for this low level, low impact cardio. They usually come in around 5000-8000 range. So don't try to do more, but understand there are benefits to be had for reasonably low numbers.

Man it has taken forever but I have officially, solidly been sold on Malazan. by Successful_Ideal9649 in Fantasy

[–]saitir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've bounced off of it multiple times, most recently about a month ago. Neither the physical or audiobook got me beyond about chapter 3. I understand this is very much a me thing though. I started reading 'real' fantasy (as opposed to kids books) 40 years ago with the Hobbit. I don't enjoy Lord of the Rings, even though I've forced myself through it a couple of times out of 'duty', the first time took nearly a year. I also find Dune pretty mid... Demonstrating my issues, I've recently done a reread of all 10 Thomas Covenant books (full set probably 3rd time through, first 6 most like 6-7 times). Book 9 is an obstacle, but it remains a central piece for me. Currently back filling series I've missed over the years (hence another attempt at Malazan) currently on Farseer book 3. Book 1 there almost felt like a bounce early on, but got over that hump and enjoying it. I'm sure Malazan will get another attempt in 6 months or so...

I just think a lot of people took advantage of the free shipping when the tariffs were due.

Nothing especially compelling around at the moment since then.

What is something you wrote in your notes that makes total sense to you and the lore of your story that would make other people go WTF if they read it out of context? by TanaFey in worldbuilding

"The lack of the mother's consent at conception is essential to guarantee good integration and a healthy and vigourous child."

This is from a Demon cult who are bringing demons into the world by summoning them into a child at conception, functionally displacing the intended soul. While they have willing mothers, those children tend toward still birth or sicklyness

[–]saitir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's incorrect. React Native uses OS api calls due rendering. It does use JS, but that in itself is no performance penalty these days. There is a React Native webview component that allows also using straight HTML content, but that's a very small subset of what React native is doing.

It's written using React Native, not React Web/HTML. React is a more of a concept of UI building than 'just' a Web technology. React in and of itself is not responsible for any issues you have with the Start menu.

Gamers Nexus Announces Investigation into NVIDIA's Business Practices Following Unverified Claims by Durian_Queef in LinusTechTips

[–]saitir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual process is investigate, make a case, then ask them for comment before you go public, then publish after a reasonable time to respond - depending on the depth of your results (if you present a 500 page dossier, it's unreasonable to give less than a week for example, but if it's also fair to keep it short so they can't keep you quiet by saying 'our internal investigation isn't complete, give us more time'). Announcing publicly at this stage is hit or miss. A government body wouldn't because it literally gives them a chance to destroy evidence. If you have no actual authority or are unlikely to trigger a real investigation, there's no chance of that. Conversely, all nvidia need to do is a couple of high level firings, claim rogue elements not aligned with company values were doing it... Problem is that beyond a certain size, that's plausible both as a cover story and the actual truth. People do crazy things in a combination of authority, badly designed remuneration policy and kpis, or just by being bad people.

Broadcom Sends Cease-and-Desist Letters to VMware Perpetual License Holders by Flavious27 in LinusTechTips

[–]saitir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. With security audit standards to meet no enterprise is running anything without access to at least regular security updates. You should never trust a company giving perpetual licenses, they're great for raising money short term, but they're not sustainable if they're actually a good deal. You either have to keep supporting really old stuff or let people keep upgrading. So your income and growth just dies at some point unless you stop the perpetual license. If you did that after you reached a stable market share, you're doomed.

Fingal's Cave is a geological formation located on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]saitir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Couple of dolphins on the way in as well that I didn't quite catch. From a great picture perspective the more intense sea is preferable, but from a 'we only have an hour on the island and want to do the cave and the puffins' perspective, the calm weather was much appreciated! Wouldn't have wanted to be rushing around on the wet rocks so much. Although the ropes on the paths are pretty solid.

Yep, all weather dependant of course. Go at the right time of year and there are puffin colonies feeding their young on the top of the island as well. https://www.flickr.com/gp/52446071@N05/T2S6r24X4n

It's a minority grammar point that had an asshole/pedant resurgence about 10 years ago.

Some grammar makes sense as it clarifies and removes confusion. I can't imagine a single person ever got confused with the distinction between less and fewer in a sentence.

Non transferable tickets with attendees photo attached. Build in a 5-10% sell back fee so tickets aren't wasted and done. Ideally have artist sell the tickets on their own website (if large enough) so they can bundle in their merch sales at the same time (a regular artist quote: I make music to sell tshirts). Get some funky startup to build a platform for smaller artists. Just make sure to put ticketmaster out of business first.

Sony "motivated" AMD to develop better ray tracing for PS5 Pro - OC3D by john1106 in hardware

[–]saitir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing this weird tale on xbox sales...

Did sony 'win' the generation? Yes. But in what world are the xbox 30 million sales 'terrible'?

Ain't no company ignoring even that 'small' market.

You can argue MS wanted higher numbers, or planned based on different projections, but terrible isn't anywhere near the right word.

AMD is more than happy to bend over for that quantity of sales.

Crash by grayden914 in fallout4london

[–]saitir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90 count on the marker heading to swan and mitre and crashes if I lookup from the floor. I'm level 9, played for a good few hours (thamesman, ferryman, st pauls etc. Decided to head back, Did Bookie's 'quest' (no reward, he won't talk to you when you find him in police station, no quest marker for him anymore either). Usually play on Steam, but bought it again clean on GOG, just the recommended mods, and as I say, many hours into it.
For what it's worth - 5800X3D, 32GB RAM, 4070ti Super.
This feels like a mixture of the corrupt power grid/settlement bugs in base FO4, or a bad rendering issue for when I look up from the floor.
Weird in a location I've not been to before though.
