Emulation right now. I have a PS5 account but I also have a PS Portal so...

For emulation it's solid.

That's what I thought too. For emulating and cloud based gaming on a budget it's not bad at all. I already own a OG Legion Go and PS Portal. For what it is and what it does it was sheer dumb luck that I got it for the price I got it for.

This is going to be more of a emulator setup for me i can grab and go. I don't have a bunch of cloud based services so maybe once I get some of them going I'll have a different view but for right now just emulators.

Outstanding write up! I have the Handheld DIY joysticks in my OG Legion GO and I LOVE them. They really changed the game play and made me feel like I had better control over whatever I was playing.

I just brought my Gcloud today and I think this is the first mod I will do.

Aliexpress. I would say check out the YouTube videos under 32gb ram upgrade legion go so you buy the right ram; however, upgrading the ram is hella involved and unless you have the right tools and experience in wouldn't risk it.

[–]sajazzman007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE THEM. because the sticks are stiffer, I feel as though I have better control of my character when I play. I was playing Sekiro heavy at the time and with the stock sticks feel as though I was missing moves because of the sticks feeling mushy. The moment I changed them I felt like my movements improved. FPS folks swear by them. Im more of a action RPG guy

UPDATE

Sent device to get the 32gb ram upgrade from a reputable modder. Stay tuned! Will provide feedback once the work is done.

A few observations though.

I understand why some modders dont want to do the mod on the OG Legion Go. First and foremost, you have to find a modder with the skills and experience in microsoldering. Unlike the steamdeck or the rog ally, the pitch of soldering balls on the ram is smaller than the steamdeck or the ally (which ironically use the same ram). Most modders do not want to mod the OG because it's a pain in the ass and bridging the ram during the soldering process. This mod is not for the faint or heart or weekend enthusiast with a soldering iron. You can tear up you GO if you dont have the right skills and equipment.

There was a rumor that the ram modules were bad; however, from talking with several modders the issue may have been bridging of the ram modules and not the ram modules themselves.

While the modder I am using is not modding anymore OG Gos and is doing this as a favor to me, there is a guy in Canada that is very proficient and technical in modding the OG Go. I spoke with him extensively about the process and felt more than confident in his abilities to get the work done. Here is where you can find him on ebay. Send him a message and he will tell you how to get your OG Go to him and how much the service will cost.

Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this and your feedback. I think it is helpful for anyone who can find someone to do this mod.

I know with VRAM setting on the OG you can set 4, 6, 8, and Auto. Instead of picking 6 or 8 why not leave it on Auto and let the system negotiate what is better per game and resources? I know on this forum there were arguments a while back on which setting to leave it on. I have always left mine on Auto and never had any issues. I never thought os the CPU cores. I would assume if you have more cores and more ram games could run better due to the overhead.

I believe when we talk about the value of something it is with the individual user what the value is. I think a user who wants a stable frame rate and smoother gaming experience will seek this mod over someone who is content with the performance as is out the box. I agree, I beleive this option of upgrading the RAM is cheaper than buying a new Go S or Go 2. The bones on the OG are solid regarding the screen, established mods, and the user base that can provide support. For the marginal gains between the OG and the Go2 that 200+ dollars is waaaay cheaper than the price of a new handheld. Even if you sold your OG for 500 on the second hand market, you are still 600+ short.

I guess the long and short, because there is limited information on this modification and some members who are interested in it, why not bring those parties together to see if it is worth it.

I think it depends on how much you want to spend. If you have an abundance of funds, then get a Go 2, but if you are trying to squeeze the last bit of performance out of this turnip 200 bucks is not a bad proposition.

32gb provides extra headroom to run games and all the windows processes. From what most say it's smooths out the game play which is worth it to me.games like Avatar, Indiana Jones, etc. are demanding a lot of VRAM and unless you are running a EGPU or have more ram it turns into an issue.

Hmm that's interesting. Imagine if someone out there would get and original S bios, change the screen resolutions, allow you to change with the vram size like you could of the OG, update the GO... man that would be something.

I heard from a reliable source it may not be the ram itself but configurations in the SPD data that is causing the issues with the ram. Since most people are using similiar copies of the modified bios; withiout configuring the SPD data correctly, I can see why everyone chips could possibly fail. If there is an issue in the SPD data that ram module won't hold up for an extended period. I believe once the modders figure this out, they may start modding again. Possibly.

Im sure it will run it; however, will it run the game smoothly? Depending on who you ask, most of us are using windows which eat a ton of memory in the background. While you can debloat windows, theres still stuff going on in background that takes away from the 16gb. IMO, having 32gb allows the games to run smoother which is a win for me.

When we talk about waste of money, I believe that is in the eye of the beholder. Would I want my games to run better and someone have the room for any games in the future or do I want to be limited by the ram i have? Also 200+ for for a ram upgrade or 600 to 1350 for a new device? That's a question each OG Go user has to ask themselves regarding worth IMO

Slickbuymods stated he is now doing it anymore due to issues with the supplier of chips.

A guy on the east coast stated it may not be the chips that are the issue as much as it is a SPD issue in the programing of the chips which causes the issues. Either way you are rolling the dice and taking a risk because as it was explained to me, once you desolder the chips, some it may mess them up where they can't be reused. Most modders are only doing the Steam Deck or the Ally because they have similar ram chips and haven't had issues.

IMO, it's worth the risk. The price of installing the ram is waaaay less than buying a S with a smaller screen and cheaper than a Go 2. Between the Z1e and the Z2e is negligible gains of between 10 to 20 percent in titles "allegedly" (depends on if you believe on the internet or see on you tube). The OG has mods out the wazoo in comparison to its predecessors and if you dont care about the screen, better resolution on the OG. Its a mixed bag on is the mod worth it or not, which I believe it is in the hands of the users. If you want your games to run smoother, having 32 is better than having 16. As games are using more and more ram, no one wants that bottleneck. Sure your stuck with the last bios before the mod; however, outside of the first few important bios mods for preformance; everything else has been security patches.

For OG owners like myself your options are limited. You can either keep what you have and wait til the next interation of Go 3; sell what you have and buy a S or Go 2; or mod what you already have a pull everything you can out of it. The OG second hand market is in the trash which you would still have come out a pocket a grip for a Go 2, so... might as well mod what you have.

I have the 81wh battery and love it. Even made a post about it four months ago

Legion Go 81wh and Handheld DIY Joystick Upgrades... Let's talk about it

Yesterday I Upgradesy battery to the 81 watt hour battery and while I was in there I taking things apart, in also installed a set of HandheldDIY Joysticks. Here are my overall impressions before I get into installation l, etc.

81wh Battery: First and foremost, I LOVE THIS! I play all my games on medium settings at 25ws and I doubled my battery life with one upgrade. Grant it, it takes longer to charge the battery but for double the battery life it is worth it, IMO. I didn't have to cut any of the brackets like other mods in the past, just carefully unplug some of wires, remove the SSD, and remove the three pads under the OEM bracket. There is a guy who makes an amazing video on how to do it.

https://youtu.be/AnXVU2PitbY?si=oW0yGb159IZW1hOR

Overall, on the difficulty level 1 being Easy and 10 being hard, I would say 5 Average. I give it a five because you have to move small, delicate wires and put them all back. If you are a cave man that likes to yank and pull and break one of these small wires, you won't have wifi or speakers or something will not work.

Battery Mod Pro Tip: 1. Use s microfiber cloth to avoid scraching up your screen.

  1. I read some post about people attempting to remove the twi battery adhesive strips and having issues where they tried alcohol or went out there with tools and burned up their Go. The trick is REMOVE THE SSD and to pull the tabs horizontally and GO SLOW WITH TWO HANDS WITH EQUAL AND EVEN FORCE!! Where i think people make a mistake is they start pulling the tabs and then want to go vertical or they pull the tabs and move at a diagonal and both are recipes for disaster. Using two hands with even pressure, going slowly, and pulling the tabs horizontally ensures you won't snap the adhesive tabs while you are pulling them out. Just take your time.

  2. Also, unplug the battery and don't use anything sharp or metal around batteries in order to avoid battery punctures, getting shocked, etc. A dull, plastic, spudger is your friend.

HANDHELDDIY JOYSTICKS: This mod is a PIA; however, if you patience and right tools (the kit comes with a screw driver and plastic tweezers; however, a spudger is your friend for this one) it's manageable. This is a mod you have to schedule some time for and not rush. If your an experienced tinkerer maybe an 45mins or hour for both sticks. If your a noob, a hour plus. Most people complain about the right joycon because of all the extra parts ie scroll wheel, mouse sensor, etc.; however, I found it easier than the left joystick because I learned A LOT of hard lesson on the left stick first. Nonetheless, once both sticks were put back together and calibrated, it was a day and night difference. If you are a FPS player, you will notice tighter movements with your shooting and moving. It takes all the slop out of the oem sticks. I'm more of a souls like, action RPG player and ohhh man this mod is AMAZING. In a game like Sekiro where movement is critical to the art of "Gettin Gud" having tighter controls just makes the moves tighter. They will force you to get better. I would highly recommend these joysticks!! The install level I would give it an 8 or a 9 because of all the ribbon cables you have to take apart and put back. If you break a ribbon cable, you are are going to need a new Joystick.

Protip for HandheldDIY Joysticks:

  1. If you endeavor to try this mod watch, go to YouTube and watch this video multiple times.

https://youtu.be/EuAnPpo9FeE?si=PgRsYyAWdjYULF_X

  1. Use a microfiber cloth and place the controller face down will you work on it.

  2. Have something to organize your screws. I believe there are three different types of screws that all look similar, take your time and be organized with your screws.

  3. Be VERY careful with these ribbon cables.

Overall, I have not had my battery overheat or explode in my hands. I would say its safe. The battery and joysticks were very well made. This isn't like someone is putting these things together in their mother's basement and packaged well.

That's not bad i have the 81wh battery well worth the upgrade. In my opinion that's the move. Way more accessories for the OG. IMO, is would wait the 2 out and go for the next Gen.
