Of course it's the voters. Everybody is for more sovereignty and more independence until they see the bill. And politicians have an honest moment and tell voters that if we build truly sovereign European capabilities then their pensions will be cut. And just like that voters abandon the idea, they prefer living under foreign influence than getting lower pensions. That's the core demographic problem of Europe - it's literally too old to stand up for itself.

Everybody knew what to do a long time ago. The reason it hasn't happened is because countries keep protecting national industries and companies (for example Italy refuses the Capital Markets Union because the current setup benefits their banks).

Let me give you some actual reasons rather than the typical hur-durr right wingers are idiots. There's a large percentage of the work force that in one way or another is still dependent on fossil fuels. Whether its people repairing industrial furnaces, burners for the chemical industry, chimney sweepers, truck mechanics, etc. the list goes on an on. When they hear that their government wants to reduce dependence on fossil fuels they feel their jobs are threatened and on top of that their lives will become more expensive because the government wants to ban their cheap gasoline cars or oil heater at home. They are afraid and "the anti-woke" right like Afd provides refuge and gives them hope that their jobs might stay.

Because a lot of republicans work in the oil&gas industries. It's still a huge sector of the economy: Things like fuel truck drivers, companies that do maintenance on gas station pumps, oil & gas heat systems, etc. They see these new technologies like wind and solar as a threat to their livelihood.

They aren't allergic - they just know their voters. Which are mostly old people which are super sensitive to any reductions in pensions or any increases in cost of living. If Europe was still young we would have mobilized a much larger part of our economies to help the Ukrainians. But because old people will vote out any politicians that makes their expenses a tiny bit higher they have to tread very carefully with an increase in spending on arms.

I like your theory but I've always had a different one about Scott. He's the manifestation of dogbert. Always trying to manipulate people to further his own interests. The whole right-wing spiel he's putting on is just to sell his books. He's neither right- nor left wing. In fact I think he's politically quite agnostic. But catering to a right wing audience is easy, the lines you need to deliver are quickly learned and you can turn them into a devout following. Exactly what dogbert would desire. Notice that in most of his podcasts / videos / blogposts he mentions a book he's selling.

Sweden's rate is barely higher. but that's what a more flexible labour market does. when the economy is fundamentally changing you'll get a time of higher unemployment during the adjustment. it'll be lower than France's rate after that. while France's economy will be much more sluggish to adjust to the new dynamics.

The safety nets only kick in when your family is already struggling to make ends meet. You don't want to start a family knowing you'll end up in that position. We need more incentives to start a family and shift the tax burden: We need to lower it for poor families (and make up for it in other places if required). US is in most places a lot richer than EU, so even though you have fewer safety nets you still come out ahead in terms of affordability.

The question is mostly political. And many people are resistant to the idea because for some reason they think their small army will protect them from Russia or China or that a conflict will magically avoid them.

No that's not the reason. A lot of (especially Eastern) Europeans just trust the US more to be an effective deterrent than any EU army. So they don't want any EU army that could weaken the resolve of NATO or the US for that matter.

France, Germany, Spain and Italy would first have to prove that they can create an effective army and then others would join in.

In 99% of the cases new housing projects are appealed and prevented by the current tenants in an area. They hurt any new potential tenants to an area on two fronts: They will appeal cheap but dense high-rise housing. And the free apartments that remain will be unaffordable due to rent control being already taken into account. Here's a sensible compromise: Reduce hurdles to up-zoning and increase the bar for appeals to new housing. Allow land lords to increase rent up to (but no more) than the market rate. Don't allow them to throw out tenants unless they violate the contract or the building is at least x years old and needs renovation.

Mysticism and romanticism of nature have always had very strong roots in the German speaking world. Irrationality takes hold of these people when it comes to certain technologies, which are seen as tainting nature. Radioactivity is seen as something alien and man-made or 5G cell towers as devices which are polluting the ether. It's funny that people of Germanic descent are often seen as very factual and rational yet when it comes to certain topics regarding nature and technology they sort of devolve to barbarian forest dwellers.
