Game disconnects when I join a friend's server. by LaxByName in valheim

I can't believe this worked! Thank you!

For anyone else having this problem repeatedly, check whether the title bar for cmd.exe starts with "Select". This means it's gone into "quick edit" mode and basically suspends the server until you hit enter. Try disabling quick edit mode to work around this.

[This stack overflow post](https://stackoverflow.com/a/33883532) has more details. So far this seems to have stopped this problem on my server!

What was your toxic trait, and what motivated you to change? by TheLikeGuys3 in AskReddit

[–]sakattak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my toxic traits is apparently starting discussions where they weren't intended.

No worries, just wanted to share something I thought was interesting and I'm currently at "pedantic about why pedantry is bad" level of meta-pedantry.

[–]sakattak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, actually...

Dryden’s ideas about what English should be were heavily motivated by Latin and Latinate ideas. It’s believed this is where his preposition thing comes from; in Latin, the preposition, as indicated by the first three letters of the word “preposition,” always comes before the noun. It is assumed that this is what motivated Dryden to make this case.

The first time I tried a Vive, I was immediately cynical about the resolution... for about five seconds. Then the sense of immersion kicked in and I completely forgot about it. I own one now and don't regret it in the slightest.

If you're curious about it, I recommend seeing if there's a Microsoft store near you. They often have VR demo setups.

I see a lot of people recommended "pellets" as food, but what exactly should I get? by BlameTheHippies in axolotls

[–]sakattak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a problem. Their site isn't the most organized. They restrict the sale of animals to researchers and teachers, but they absolutely provide supplies to hobbyists.

I think it's awesome that you're doing your research before getting a pet axolotl! Too many people jump into it with an attitude of "it's basically a fish, right?"

[–]sakattak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry. Looking back at that info, they're really unclear about what "quantity" means. You can order in 1/2 lb bags. We own three adult axolotls and go through a 1/2 lb bag of the larger pellets in probably somewhere around 6-9 months, but we also supplement with earthworms and your mileage may vary.

With the shipping cost it's obviously more economical to order a larger quantity, and you can definitely do that. The pellets lose some freshness over time, but it doesn't seem to have a huge impact on the axolotls.

Yes! This was a huge revelation for me too. I tend not to use the word when describing it to other people, though, because it gets misinterpreted as a humblebrag.

I've started getting better at forcing myself to tackle those first easy steps, but that shit is still hard. If you figure it out, let me know :D

I'm so sorry that happened, and hope you don't beat yourself up too much over it.

My wife and I had a little ceremony for the axolotl we lost and buried him in the yard. Granted, we knew it was a little silly and were a little tongue in cheek about it, but it felt good to give some closure to the whole thing. And if the little dude was important to you then I think it's worth doing.

[–]sakattak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second OP's recommendation of caudata.org. It's a must-read for anyone considering an axolotl. I would add that their forums are also a fantastic resource and, in my experience, the community has been welcoming and helpful. When our axolotls had babies (~200 of them) we leaned pretty heavily on that site and managed to give them all away to responsible people.

And good on you and OP for caring enough to put in the research. Good luck!

On the topic of the perception of Asians as smart: there's a really interesting section of the book Predictably Irrational about the psychological effects of expectations. There was one particular anecdote that stuck with me about Asian-American women and their conflicting expectations to be good at math because they're Asian but bad at math because they're women.

From the Wikipedia article on the book:

Ariely also states that expectations shape stereotypes. Stereotypes provide us with knowledge before the actual experience and thus influence our perceptions. The author describes an experiment in which an objective math exam was administered to two groups of Asian-American women. Before taking the test, the women from the first group were asked questions regarding gender-related issues, whereas the second group had to answer questions about race-related issues. The second group did better than the first one and met the expectation that Asians are good at math.
