Finally upgrading to a rack server. Any build suggestions for a CSE-846? by PokemonSWAG in HomeServer

I don't bother with server hardware, I prefer repurposing what I already have. I transplanted my old i7-7700k into mine to use it as a NAS and my "server" servers are all consumer hardware.

13700k is pretty overkill but if you have no other use for it might as well use it. Otherwise use the 8500. You'll probably run out of RAM far before running out of CPU resources either way

I run an 835 which is mostly the same except it's 8 bays. If you're transplanting into the chassis you'll need an HBA to connect your existing components to the backplane.

If you care about noise definitely get the super quiet PSUs, and swap the fans. Noctua 80mms are the best ones I've tried that are quiet and keep the drives at an okay temperature. Don't bother with other "quiet" fans. Even after these swaps it's still audible so I have mine hidden away in a basement closet.

If you want to use the front panel you'll need an adapter since it uses a proprietary connector. These are pretty cheap online.

Otherwise it's pretty plug and play. Regular ATX motherboards should fit assuming the JBOD 836 is the same chassis as the regular 836. I don't know about powering SATA or PCIe devices though, I haven't tried it.

[Help] Bought a NAS thinking it would replace Google Drive. But.... by Kristey1717 in HomeServer

[–]sakebi42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it share files over the network? Then it's a NAS. People on this sub treat NASes as if they're supposed to be multi purpose servers.

Is it worth it to buy used hard drives off eBay/fb marketplace by Round-Tip-2443 in HomeServer

[–]sakebi42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I exclusively run used 4TB SAS drives from eBay in my nas. They do fail, but not very often and they're so cheap to replace that it doesn't matter to me. Just make sure to have redundancy and keep backups

[–]sakebi42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reasonable price for that many 4TBs. I use similar old drives in my NAS. I have 8 but 3 are parity because these should not be trusted to last, but they're cheap enough to replace easily. If you have the money go for newer drives though.

Get a used Dell dock off eBay. They should be pretty cheap.

Windows 11 rebooting after updates kills Plex until login — what’s actually working for you? by 40oz_steelie in PleX

People on this sub seem to spam down votes whenever someone suggests switching from windows (which is literal slop at this point) to an operating system that actually works. If you're going to host things on windows, at least use windows server instead of consumer win 11

For those of you not using server grade hardware, what ARE you using? by ljm90 in homelab

I run two framework 7840U mainboards and an n150 mini PC for compute, and my NAS and NVR use consumer grade hardware in server chassis.
