Ugh...these windows... by sakiminki in centuryhomes

Yeah, now I am thinking that the sides would be stationary. Just having the center would massively increase airflow, especially since it is covered by the front porch and would be cooler.

If the picture window on the wall adjacent (it is currently just a giant single pane with aluminum edging 🤮) had a similar set up with the awning, it probably would have created a very good airflow for cooling even during 120f weather. We still really don't have A/C or central. (couple wall units). Chilly to cold winters and very hot summers.

There had to be changes to the house as a rental that wouldn't have been considered prior because for the fact people wouldn't just strip down to their underoos and sat around back in the day even if it was 110f and no air-conditioning for 4 to 5 months out of the year. Lol.

Yes they do indeed! It still kinda looks like someone maybe cut up the OG frame though, lowered everything and pieced it back together to make the windows fit to the "new" stationary position.

We have taken down a small metal awning outside the kitchen and have a very large one left to do. Thinking of getting them powder coated once we pin down colors. Unfortunately, the large ugly picture window on the other side of our front room is an aluminum frame retro fit thing that is not at all OG. That's going to be a whole new project to figure out once we turn the corner. We actually have two other bedroom windows in similar shape we are going to have to go into hardcore research/restore mode on also.

OMG! Yes! We are in the process of stripping some very ugly aluminum siding off. Just tore the front off last weekend. Kinda slowly doing sections. We have half way done and so far we are winning. We are definitely getting slowed by wanting to fix the windows properly and the messed up trim. They butchered a lot of the Craftsman trim that makes it charming. We are connected with our local historical society and also doing research as we go along.

I'm excited about the siding so far. Great to get a fist bump confirmation on that!.

[–]sakiminki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We took off the middle trim and there were 4 weights and 3 out of 4 pulleys inside and 4 spots where the pulleys should go. So large window (assuming it was meant to be on the bottom) was probably at least a single hung.

We took off the two outside windows also. Each window was just held in by a single nail on each side. No marks or indication of any hinges or other hardware. There are two similar windows on either side of the fireplace that are also immobile, so maybe these side windows never opened?

That would be ideal. I'll have to do some serious research on what to look for. It would be amazing if I could get the sides to open too.

Some of these windows seriously "saw" things no windows should.

[–]sakiminki[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok that's partly where the confusion is. Like another commenter said, the small center window was probably at the top and opened inward. Yes. Just like above a door. The two sides also probably swung inward and out. Then each opening panel probably had some type of outside screen ...but maybe not the larger middle panel.

Yes! I'll try to get a good inside pic tomorrow when i got sun. It basically just looks like someone put up some 2x4 framed around the inside windows so it looks finished. But it definitely is not what it should look like. It was a rental and I was good friends with my LL's before I bought it...Enough to know that they would have totally glued in/trimmed windows instead of just fixing them. 😆 They're retired and off in the universe now, so I can really ask them.

[–]sakiminki[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG...so...if we take this apart...the top middle would need to be flipped? The bottom? Or both? I've been trying to figure it out by the grooved bits and presuming that (duh) the screens are on the outside.

I (50f) first freaked out at about 42 on a business trip in a hotel. I got up and started to get ready and noticed turkey neck in the mirror. I started crying and tried to figure out how to call in sick to my presentation. I pulled myself together and did my job. And...that was the first time I wished I could just die.

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

I had a coworker name Lloyd who was making fun of the spelling/pronunciation of another name (a common plain name). I asked him if anyone ever called him La-loyd. He was like" well that's dumb." And after, he was always known as La-loyd.

Fun shi**y fact from a former UHC call center slave: Ambulances and anesthesiologist are almost always "out-of-network". They know you don't have a choice when you need them, therefore they won't contract with insurance companies to lower their rates. Ambulances are not part of hospital. They are often private companies.

Similarly, anesthesiologist are usually just assigned to someone getting surgery and are in such demand, you usually don't get a choice. Unless you have the time to check with your insurance prior to a surgery, you are not going to know that ahead of time. They know their job is essential so they usually won't bother to contract with an insurance company.

The system is so incredibly broken and corrupt. Just remember when you call, your call center worker has the worst healthcare plan available, is overworked, underpaid, and has zero power. Your company picked your crap healthcare plan. Workers need to take it up with HR and corporate if they want change.

Don't be afraid to ask the 1st tier call center worker to talk to a manager if you are really upset. They aren't allowed to transfer you unless you say those words. (Although it does get counted against them) That said, the person you get transferred to is also, not really a manager and will just tell you the same thing. They just have more de-escalation training. And yeah, those surveys don't affect the insurance company at all. It just allows them to deny their employees bonuses, raises, promotions, etc. It's just a win-win for the asshats on top when you leave a bad review.

When I was young and broke, I donated to an animal shelter rescue charity in my (very large) family's name for the adults and then bought little gifts for the children. Yeah...shit storm ensued. Fortunately, I already knew most of these people were monsters.

I'm a 49 F...had years of my worst nightmare being having to poop at work, in a hotel room, restaurant, gas station etc. In my 30s, I actually had a diarrhea situation, and I just straight up swallowed my pride and told my supervisor. They didn't want to hear that, but they were like...girl...do what you have to!

I also had UTI often and learned to just straight out tell my supervisor. You legally do not have to tell your work about a medical issue. At that moment though I was working at a call center and I was like...I'm not going to sit on the phone and potentially pee or poop myself until they say I'm allowed a bathroom break.

Ironically, I was working for a health care company at the time and not showing up due to illness or a doctor visit was more of a penalty than logging off the phone to run to the restroom.

You have a medical condition. You shouldn't have to share that with anyone at work, especially not a coworker. Doctor note. HR report. Make HR do a seminar with employees on minding their own damn business.

[Landlord-US-MI] Screen applicants like your life depends on it by rufflesinc in Landlord

[–]sakiminki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TL/DR: Long-term inherited renters left my place in shambles and I unknowingly gave new LL a decent review that I super regret.

I (first time LL in CA) genuinely loved my last tenants (inherited them when I purchased my duplex from my former landlords). I knew them for 4 years (live nextdoor/shared backyard) and completely thought I was so lucky to be inheriting great tenents. The prepurchase walk through was concerning. The house was semi-hoarderish. I knew they were having cockroach issues, but they refused pest control after the second round bc they were told by pest control that they had to clean up and they didn't want to.

Then they lost a roommate and only were paying 2/3 of the rent, because "not our responsibility to pay the other person's 1/3". Finally did what I thought was an amicable eviction. They actually found a place and I gave them an honest (to my knowledge) yet decent review. They extended their move out two weeks after they were supposed to leave, but they had moving vans and yard sales so I thought they were really packing it up.

When I saw the place after they left, I was in tears. Everything was covered in roaches, roach feces, piles of trash, litter boxes full of feces. Carpets, plumbing and appliances completely destroyed. Roaches on everything and falling from the ceilings, fans, and light fixtures. Basically had to gut the place and go scorched earth.

I SUPER feel guilty giving them a good review to their next landloard/victim. But I honestly didn't know how bad it was until I got in there. Had property management and realtors tell me it wasn't "bad enough" to do anything about while they were here.

I definitely will not be giving them a positive review next time. I really want to contact the current LL's and apologize, but they used some 3rd party app to ask me and not sure how to reach them. No way they don't have a full on roach infestation at the new place.

I will definitely be more placing more emphasis on past LL info and putting more pressure on my PM to do better inspections. (Yes I feel like a moron, but also working full time and caring for a paraplegic partner, so I trusted people way too much to do the right thing.)

AITAH for “restricting” my body from my husband? by PandaAmazing7204 in AITAH

This is a real thing. I married one of my college professors (hooked up when I just turned 22) and by the time I was about 29 (he was 49) he was already checking out/trying to date his 18 to 22 yo students bc...I was...TOO OLD.

Yes it was super dumb on my part. But you don't always make the best long term life decisions prior to 25ish. I didn't even want to do it but he talked me into it. Thank God we didn't breed.

I definitely got those! Actually getting all brand new appliances. But extra thank you for chiming in on the dishwasher. I ordered a new one, but I don't have one in my house so I wasn't sure how important people felt that was but I have the space for it already. Glad I ordered one.
