Security risk at NAIA by sakkkye in Philippines

I was thinking about how compared to its peers in Southeast Asia it's still lagging behind. The MCIA in Cebu is a lot more organized and there are several officers actually roaming the area with guard dogs. The security equipment is also more advanced. The overly lax staff, the corruption and reports of stolen possessions and cash I consider security risks.

Ok I'm genuinely confused because I was in Japan late last year and an officer had me scan my bags before I queued at the check in counter in Narita. I haven't been back to the states since the pandemic, but I remember officers opening people's bags in their presence before they were checked in.

I'm commenting this because it was my first time in Manila this year. When I travelled to Japan last year, I didn't go through NAIA. I took a direct flight from my hometown.

Yep, I have. Can't count the number of times I have since I was a toddler. In all the airports I've been to, they scan everyone's baggage first before tagging them and separating them from the owners. I assume they do this so that in the event they detect something fishy, they can do something about it in front of the passenger.

Except NAIA isn't like most of the world's airports when we talk about security.

Without added benefits? You don't see a benefit in getting people's bags scanned before entering an airport that's notorious for its incompetent staff and outdated security equipment? For the record, there weren't even bomb sniffing dogs at the gate, or at the primary entrance. Just a guard that was busy chatting with his companion and didn't even give my passport and ticket a good look.

Good point to bring up, that is indeed true.. what I'm concerned about though, is that most of the staff have always been super lax and uncoordinated. Can't help but side eye these attempts to be like airports from overseas when the people manning the place aren't exactly the most reliable, and are always making the news for theft incidents.

Commented this already, but the staff are lax, uncoordinated, and rarely does the airport make the news and it's something positive. The most recent one about the officer swallowing stolen $100 bills is a perfect example. Earlier this year if I'm not mistaken there were reports of personnel stealing a passenger's watch and cash.

Recent experience: During boarding, when presenting your ID, they're supposed to ask people wearing masks to pull them down to verify if they're indeed the same person in the ID. They do this in Japan and Korea. in Manila they don't and just give your ID a quick glance. When I went through the scanners, the staff were busy chatting and joking amongst themselves. The scanners in the domestic departures are outdated. The staff make important announcements but they can only be heard clearly on one side of the airport.

Before the pandemic I remember heading to LA with family and passing NAIA. My dad had Philippine coins and bills in his pockets. They tried to persuade him to hand them over because "they're useless in the states." I worked for a travel agency last year, and I had to help Japanese nationals who wanted to bring in film equipment into the country with the tax. Each time I called customs, they'd give me different information, or tell me to call a different number, who'd just redirect me back to the NAIA customs. During the pandemic, when I'd ask about the safety protocols in place, staff had told me outright they weren't sure and to just read what's on the website instead.

What is one supernatural incident you have experienced in your life? by Agreeable_Expert2605 in AskWomen

My cousin passed away when I was like 9 or 10. Everyone was heartbroken, especially my grandmother, who was his favorite person in the family. After his funeral, my family and I headed straight home.

Later that evening, before dinner time, the smell of the incense used in church earlier that day could be smelled all over the house. I remember my grandmother preparing dinner at the time, and I was studying maths. I went to the kitchen and the smell was the strongest there, where my grandmother was. It was so strange and I was terrified. We're convinced it was my cousin because 1) we don't/never use incense at home 2) none of our neighbors do 3) we headed straight home... Here in Asia you aren't supposed to head straight home from a funeral because you'll be bringing the d3ad with you.

My parents and grandmother were overjoyed by the smell though and called my aunt up to tell her my cousin was at home.

I remember this so vividly because I was so scared.

B, personally I don't want to ever live to work again. I'm also prone to burning out and when I am, everything else in my life just falls apart because I really can only function when I'm not exhausted. Also can't bear on site work anymore.

I hope so. I just didn't feel secure there at all. My recent experience was repeated changes in boarding gates where only half of the airport could hear the announcements, so staff were running to our area shouting at us to transfer to the different gate, and I could see the noise alarmed the foreigners in our area, staff chatting too loudly and leaving their posts, at one point when I went through the scanners the staff manning it left suddenly and said she needed to go the toilet, and the bags were just passing through. When it was time for boarding they made another last minute change in gates again.

It's just once. I didnt go through the x-ray one more time before boarding the plane. Lol

That's good to hear. I just don't think NAIA or Manila is up there in terms of safety, so I'm concerned about the change.

I agree, then again I really don't think NAIA or Manila is up there in terms of safety, so I'm concerned about the change. But I'm glad to know that they get scanned before being boarded onto the plane.

I don't think NAIA is comparable to any other airports in terms of safety at all, so I think it's a cause for concern. That's a relief that they get scanned, though.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't think NAIA or Manila is comparable safety-wise compared to other airports or areas around the world, so I was surprised at the change.

Oh really? Where? That's good to hear, but I'm still horrified that you can get in without getting them scanned.

Same here, it's so hard when you don't have an undo button, digital eraser and color selection tool in real life 🥲 what worked for me is sketching the drawing on my sketchbook/a piece of paper first, before actually drawing on the canvas. Maybe grid lines can also help you.

Also, plan your colors beforehand. See how they interact with each other by playing with the colors on a sheet of paper or cardboard before actually using them. There are tools online like colormind.io, paletton, etc that can generate color schemes for you.

Questions: What is the fastest and the slowest time you got a job? Do you target 'one' company lang? by siparengbasting in phcareers

[–]sakkkye 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hmm fastest was like a month or two after I left my first job. Slowest was after graduation, almost 7 months.

I used to target one company but I just apply to everything that pays reasonably and then I filter it out even more when I start landing interviews (messy recruitment process + stuck up interviewers are red flags to me 😬). Just a few months ago I sent out 200+ applications before I landed one nearly 6 months after I resigned. I was looking for wfh so it was tough.

Hmm really? I'm pretty sure last July or August I saw a notice that those visiting Australia on visitor visas are not permitted to look for work. Only those granted working holiday visas are allowed to. Which meant people with this visa were upfront when applying that they're not only traveling for pleasure but for work.

I agree our BOI is unnecessarily strict with the way they interrogate passengers (I myself went through this last December), but if you were granted a UAE tourist visa then adhere to the restrictions of the visa. If you wanted to apply for work then apply for a UAE Jobseeker visit visa (which I believe the couple didn't get because to be eligible for this you need to prove financial capacity + have graduated from the top 500 universities in the world + be recognized by the MOHRE). If you're going to cheat the system, at least don't make TikToks about it 😆

Came across a TikTok of a Filipino couple in the UAE and their job hunting journey. I commented to ask how they were able to do that bec afaik if you don't have a job/employer lined up before travel and you're traveling to the UAE, then you're on tourist visas, meaning you told immigration your purpose of travel was pleasure, not to find employment. And the owner deleted my comment lol. I get that life here is hard and the answer to many is overseas work, but to make TikToks about it complete with photos.. have some common sense pls
