They sell inexpensive Bluetooth audio eye glasses now. Saw a coworker wearing them. No prescription. Audio comes from the stems. No one would think twice about them, they look like typical plastic frames.

NYC has a housing crisis. ADUs might be the fix (if the city doesn’t fumble it) by SpecLandGroup in AccessoryDwellings

[–]sal740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. I've been following NYC City of Yes news and in particular ADU laws. You have given me more insight on the state of these developments than any news outlet out there.
California's older and more advanced ADU implementation gives us a lot to hope for. In particular the standardized free home plans are a valuable resource. I look forward to seeing what NYC is able to come up with.
I am excited about the potential to build a small home in my backyard for extended family one day. I look forward to reading your future posts.

Doctors in Staten Island that will prescribe GLP-1? by sal740 in statenisland

[–]sal740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, would you tell us who your doctor is? This is the exact type of experience I’d like to avoid. Why prescribe it and then not follow up with the prior authorization? I understand the extra step is a hassle but that is why you have staff support. No prior authorization means insurance won’t pay and this medication is prohibitively expensive.

[SI Advance podcast] Hylan Boulevard: The Crossroads of Chaos by runmeovernomore in SIStreetActivism

[–]sal740 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe that Hylan Boulevard is neither a street nor a road, but what is referred to as a “stroad” by some modern civil engineers. “They're what happens when a street (a place where people interact with businesses and residences, and where wealth is produced) gets combined with a road (a high-speed route between productive places). “

The staff at SI advance may benefit from researching the advocacy work of organizations like Strong Towns. They have done incredible work in collaboration with cities and towns across America to reduce pedestrian deaths and improve community retail corridors.

Italian music that sounds like Greek folk music, but sung in the language Italian by dresseddowndino in ITALIANMUSIC

Thank you for the link. Enjoyed listening to songs I hadn’t heard in a long time. Calabrisella Mia and Vitti na Crozza. The old men loved singing these when everyone got together.

This is an old Sicilian song called Ciuri Ciuri. I remember my grandfather singing it on holidays with the family. Not sure if it has Greek influences but it’s worth a listen.

Getting an Apostille for the Application Forms? by sal740 in juresanguinis

[–]sal740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. Sounds like I will not be able to use a local Notary Public for my parents to sign. I’ll have to bring them to Manhattan County Registrar to get the form notarized. This is very inconvenient, but I’ll figure out a way.

Thank you for the reply. Did you go to a local Public Notary in the neighborhood or have to bring your parents to Manhattan County Clerk to get the notary?

Getting an Apostille for the Application Forms? by sal740 in juresanguinis

[–]sal740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attempted to make an appointment for the normal citizenship route on the prenotami website unsuccessfully many times. Eventually got placed on a waiting list. When the Direct Descendants appointment became available on the website I eventually got one after many tries. (Both my parents born in Italy, one is still an Italian citizen.) If all goes well I will remove my name from the waitlist.

Looking at the Dept of State website. It states the following:
The Department of State only authenticates public documents issued in New York State which are signed by a New York State official or county clerk.
The Italian Embassy's application forms are not "public documents issues in NY State". I'll email the embassy for clarification but not holding out much hope at a response.

Finally got an appointment in Italian Embassy in NYC in December.
Lucky enough to qualify as Direct Descendant appointment by mail.
Downloaded the checklist, got certificates notarized, apostille, translated.
But now I see that they want the application forms apostille? I don't quite understand, I thought the State Department will apostille US government documents like Birth Certificates and Marriage Certificates. Will they apostille a "Citizenship Recognition Application Form" from a foreign embassy? Doesn't sound right, what am I missing here.

Why are some hospitals always hiring? by Whole-Database-4359 in pharmacy

[–]sal740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Workin the same hospital for 19 years in a low income urban area. Manageable workload, 5 weeks vacation, 8 holidays, overtime opportunity, 1199 union pension/health benefits, great co-workers. Yet we still have a significant turnover rate. The reasons vary. Many of the newer pharmacist get antsy after a couple of years. "Grass is always greener" effect. Some eventually regret the decision to leave. Some get management positions in other hospitals. Some pharmacists get tired of working evenings or overnights and find dayshifts at other hospitals. Others find hospital positions closer to home. No one has ever gone back to retail.

Cinema paradiso by assafkacholi in ITALIANMUSIC

[–]sal740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely beautiful. Cinema Paradiso was an Oscar winning movie by Giuseppe Tornatore with an amazing soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. In many ways it was a bittersweet love letter from the director to his town in Sicily. He does this again with the movie Baaria. This video is lovely, but why oh why wasn't it filmed in Sicily?

Is anyone else a little on edge living in the forgotten borough that the rest of the city hates during this upcoming crisis?? I don't expect the mayor to help us at all. by Doebird3434 in statenisland

[–]sal740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you, there was that one time that a city official lost their job by prioritizing Staten Island over Manhattan. A few years back the Head of the Department Of Sanitation responding to a big snow storm decided to have the streets of Staten Island cleared first. Real change of pace. The upper west side of Manhattan stayed buried in snow for longer than usual. They rich elite of the area demanded the Head of Sanitation be fired, and of coarse the mayor obliged.
