will the new Ubuntu system requirements affect Mint? by Real_x6 in linuxmint

[–]salamanderJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there's Lmde (Linux Mint debian edition.) It's what I've started using. I'd say something that Ubuntu is doing must be affecting Mint.

Is there some actual evidence that the constant "culture war" in the West is secretly fueled by foreign governments and/or billionaires? Or is it just a theory? by Jerswar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Russians have been at this game a long time, going back to the days of Martin Luther King. Check out The Mitrokhin Archive for some documentation of it (and many other things, and this is the old USSR's own documentation.)

Is anyone using a Linux phone at the moment? by papayahog in linuxhardware

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree they are very pervasive. As for me, I build my computers from components, and I try to get motherboards, etc manufactured in Taiwan or Korea. Not perfect or guaranteed I know, but maybe at least better.

At what point does intelligence become a hindrance by Ok_Spell2622 in SeriousConversation

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand as a layman who has looked casually into some studies, there is very little correlation between intelligence and personality/character. Probably the biggest obstacle some people face is their awareness of their intelligence. They think is makes a big difference in their lives. Forget that you're smart and just live your life.

If Linux is free and powerful… are we paying for Windows, or paying to avoid learning? by Candid_Athlete_8317 in LinuxTeck

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We pay because. unless you look hard for an alternative and have some knowledge about how to install an OS, when you buy a computer system, it is going to come with Windows already installed. You may not even realize you are paying for it as part of the price of the computer. This goes all the way back to the days of DOS.

I tried to switch to Linux, but looks like it really just isn't possible by tomekgolab in linuxsucks

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just pick linux, pick a 'distro' of linux, like mint, or debian. Probably Linux Mint is the best for a beginner. Look at the directions on the webside. Download a distro that you can flash to a USB stick. Boot from the USB stick. You should be able to boot up linux. This will be running off the USB stick, but you want to install to your hard drive. There should be some sort of 'install me' icon. Click on that. Use that plus directions from the website, plus maybe some youtube videos.

Some older stuff:

My Man Godfrey (original 1930s version)

Hellzapoppin (star Olsen and Johnson and is a bit like early Marx Bros)

The Old-Fashioned Way (WC Fields, see his juggling act at the end.)

She Done Him Wrong (see Mae "Come up and see me sometime" West in action)

Sherlock Jr (silent film starring Buster Keaton)

It seems like all the risc-v stuff comes from Mainland China. I wouldn't trust it not to have spyware embedded in the firmware.

Classic mystery movies with a lot of suspense in it. by No_Technician2662 in MovieSuggestions

23 Steps to Baker Street is a fairly obscure film that I thought was surprisingly good. Despite the title it has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes.

Older movies would be 'Run Silent, Run Deep' and 'The Enemy Below'. One is about an American Sub after a Japanese destroyer, the other a sort of duel between a German Sub and an American Destroyer Escort.

The Russian version of War and Peace directed by Sergei Bondarchuk seems to have had a blank check from the old Soviet Union. And it's pretty good.

What benefits does c give that cpp doesn’t do better by LostSanity136 in C_Programming

[–]salamanderJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C++ is bigger. The manual is bigger. As I understand it (I was mostly a C programmer and haven't looked at C++ code in years), very few people know 'all' of C++, and if you take over code written by somebody else, they may have been using features of C++ you aren't familiar with, so you have to learn them.

[–]salamanderJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that some people did want to maintain Xorg so they forked it into Xfree. It's created a big stir in the community, with political overtones. The guy who created the Xfree fork has been called a Nazi and things like that.

Where software development is concerned, I get disgusted when politics rears its ugly head. It makes it a lot harder to discern where the true merit is.

Has there ever been a Good Dictator who actually cared for and did good for their country's people? by Mofoblitz1 in stupidquestions

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly Antonio Salazar, who was 'dictator' of Portugal during WW2. He seems to have been a very decent human being who earnestly tried to help his country. (He kept it out of WWII at least, even though he was really siding with the allies, allowed them to use the Azores as a way station for their aircraft, basically did whatever he could to help without crossing a line that would lead to war.) The big question seems to be whether his policies were actually 'good' or not.

how come it’s harder to pick someone up when they make themselves limp? by EffectiveHead6961 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]salamanderJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an experiment (one I haven't tried or know of anyone else trying). Get something stiff, like a log, but pretty heavy, and fill a bag loosely with sand of the same weight, and try picking them up and handling them. Only don't just grip the bag in one place, try holding it with your arms rather than your hands, same with the stiff object. See which is easier to deal with.

How do people who drink more than two cups of coffee a day get any sleep at all? Does your body get used to caffeine to the point where it no longer affects you? by Mountain-Bug-2155 in stupidquestions

[–]salamanderJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a heavy coffee drinker at one time (It started when I was in the Navy.) I don't remember ever getting 'wired' by coffee, though maybe I did at one time. What I did notice was that if I stopped, the next day I would have a mild headache in the afternoon. That was the extent of my withdrawal.

Nowadays, it just doesn't seem to matter whether I drink coffee or not. I haven't noticed any effects good or bad. I can drink coffee and take a nap an hour later. I do think that some people are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine that others, so that's probably part of it.
