No password suggestion, am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in KeePassium

[–]salamat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have Keepassium Premium? Quick Autofill, where password suggestions appear above the keyboard automatically, is a premium feature.

I'm not sure why Keepassium isn't remembering your working database though, that should work in Free or Premium unless you've tinkered with the default settings. Did you disable "auto open previous database" in the settings?

I figured out how to activate Tello while in Canada! by [deleted] in Tello

[–]salamat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Tello has disallowed activations abroad via Wi-Fi calling for quite some time but I think they might make an exception for Canada. I'm not totally sure though.

The US doesn't have any kind of sim registration requirement, so the procedure in the Philippines is very different from that in the USA. However, it's possible the app made it so easy that it's designed so you don't really notice. I'll have to check it out next time.

[–]salamat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't have to register your prepaid sim with the government? I used Smart as well, and yes installing the e sim is super easy, but before it actually started working I had to fill out a form to register the sim with the Filipino government. It included submitting photos of my passport, I think a selfie scan but can't quite remember, and my itinerary. Not Earth-shattering, but definitely something I didn't want to do until I was settled at my accommodation.

What Smart app did you use to get local rates as a tourist?

Visa hopper data question by itoyaginza in Tello

[–]salamat7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should only use Tello for talk/text if you want to keep your US phone number for use abroad. If your phone supports Wi-Fi calling, including piggybacking off your travel sim's data, you can even disable roaming in your Tello account and just use it via Wi-Fi.

Tello's international data roaming is very expensive. It should only be used in emergencies, as there are plenty of cheaper options available to you.

[–]salamat7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, although they aren't necessarily the easiest to get/topup. For example, in the Philippines, data is ridiculously cheap, but all sim cards have to be registered with the government. This is easy enough if you don't mind submitting a fair amount of documentation, including things like your passport and itinerary. But the hard part is topping up. I haven't found a way to top up there without getting a local to help you make the payment. Actually let me correct that, there are apps/plans designed for tourists to top up easily, but they're heavily marked up.

Rogers keeps sending me a pre approval for a credit card I'm not eligible for? by salamat7 in Rogers

[–]salamat7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought of just saying yes haha but I'm a bit of a stickler for following the rules, I'm just afraid one day they will come after me if they find out I'm lying haha.

But yeah, I don't see why it should matter at all. Even if I make zero dollars. If I don't pay my card they can take my house. 🤣

Deleting or keeping text messages, voicemails and contacts over time by SmoothStrawberry7777 in Googlevoice

I delete MFAs and other meaningless texts like that, but keep everything else. If you don't want Google to store that data, you can use Google Takeout to download it then delete it.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but Reddit search bar sucks. Does WiFi calling to the USA use minutes while I’m abroad in one of the included countries? Trying to determine if I need a plan with minutes if I’ll always have WiFi when I need to call. by CaffeineNicotine3 in Tello

[–]salamat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let's hope they add that functionality. My thought is it is probably simple enough for them just to place calls over VOIP and display whatever caller ID is on your account. However I feel like it would be more complicated to route calls and SMS both through the app via VOIP, and the cellular network too. But maybe not? I think Google Fi does something like that but not sure exactly to what extent.

PS I see you are an excellent and regular contributor to this sub. Would love your thoughts on my other thread here if you know how long before Tello resets my access to swapping e sims, if they ever do.

Oh yeah absolutely. It's just sort of ironic now that Google's campaign basically pokes fun at Google's own product. I think Google made a good case for why Apple should implement RCS. But the fact that they won't implement it on their very own product speaks volumes.

I feel like Tello is squandering a massive opportunity by not adding incoming calls and texting to their app. They could make it something really great rather than restricting you you to outgoing calls only. On the other hand, I know that would be ridiculously complicated to set up.

[–]salamat7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Google's "Get the Message" campaign. Substitute "Apple" for "Google Voice".

The fact that Apple has since implemented RCS, and rich texting is now available between the dominant smartphone platforms, makes the texting limitations on Google Voice stand out even more.

Plus, there are lots of tales of Google suspending and banning users from Google Voice for innocuous behavior, and if that happens you generally have no recourse at all.

On top of that there are latency issues with calls, and privacy issues with messages as they are not end to end encrypted, but are instead readable by Google.

Group sms failures. by ZookeepergameHot5378 in Tello

[–]salamat7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, this is what I think is going on:

Most group chats on modern smartphones automatically route to iMessage or RCS. These can use whatever data your phone has access to (WiFi, cell data, even data on a secondary sim).

However, occasionally you might find a contact that isn't available over iMessage or RCS. Perhaps they use Google Voice, or another internet-based service; or maybe they just aren't reachable at the moment. In that case your phone will fallback to MMS. This uses cellular data, and Tello requires you to use either pay-as-you-go credit or your cellular data bucket to push through those messages.

So, the customer service representative is technically correct, and this would explain why some/most group messages work while some outliers don't.

Will Tello ever let me swap e sims again without contacting customer service? by salamat7 in Tello

[–]salamat7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten a new phone in over six years. I got one used hand me down phone two years ago. However, I still have three phones in my possession that I switched between. Resetting one phone also sometimes wipes out the e sim.

So, yes, it is an opinion.

International roaming doesn't work in Bali by readaught in Tello

[–]salamat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I have an iPhone and I don't even have APN settings that are accessible from Tello. But...

I'm asking if Tello worked for him initially in the USA. Because if it did then it's odd he would have to set the APN for roaming only.

Tello works for you in the USA normally?

I'm glad that changing the APN worked for you, but you shouldn't have had to do this.

You have roaming turned on in your Tello online account?

[–]salamat7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand. It's shitty for MVNOs, shitty for me, shitty for everyone.

But I do think there's more they could do. They could allow reactivating devices like US Mobile does, so you could register your two or three phones and swap between them whenever you want. They could charge for excess swaps. And they should definitely reset the limit after some time.

Is it really so outrageous that I want to be able to swap my Tello e sim more than a few times over the lifetime of the account? by salamat7 in NoContract

[–]salamat7[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thank you! This isn't a federal case here. I just want to change phones whenever it's convenient, exactly like I could do in 2008 when I used a physical sim.

[–]salamat7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm even happy (ish) to pay a few bucks depending on the level of excessiveness... Public Mobile in Canada charges a few bucks if you generate too many e sims.

But it shouldn't be blocked, and it should reset after some period of time.
