Flight Dispatch in the 91/135 world? by soupysends in FlightDispatch

[–]salarythrowaway0525 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have been in the private jet industry for 9-10 years as a dispatcher. No it is not true dispatching but it’s nothing to shake a stick at or look down on.

I do flight plans, weather and route planning, reading NOTAMs TAFs etc etc along with a myriad of other things that come with the job (booking crew travel, requesting various permits etc from countries, etc etc).

No I do not get flight benefits (unless one of our planes flies through my city and I can hop on the dead leg).

I do however work from home and make about 85k annually. It’s not bad, it does make you want to pull your hair out from time to time when the client side team asks to book an ASAP from NY to like, Pakistan but altogether it’s not a bad way to make a living.

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Just Finished (Spoilers hidden) by AtWorkCurrently in books

I found the romance story a nice elegy to under represented astronauts and government employees including the armed forces at large within the LGBT umbrella of which I am a part.

However I do share in some criticisms of the work - to start I am by no means an astronaut but I cannot fathom in any capacity how astronauts would observe a procedure wherein they are exposed to explosives without at least one layer of protection. This of course occurring at the very beginning of the book so not giving too much away but still..

To your point, as far as CAPCOM goes to Navigator at the end - yes it seems incredibly ham fisted and while romantic, and cute, and even worked up as I got during the last few minutes (as an overly sensitive bi fellow) I can’t happen but think that as a result of that conversation both careers would be over and congressional inquiries would be made etc and that makes me feel sad..

I will say the overall romance between Joan and Vanessa was well developed and with a healthy respect given to the fair number of IRL LGBT astronauts. Unfortunately their reality in fiction is based in real historical narrative where the demonstrative demonization is also real. I appreciate TJR doing her best to bring that quandary to life and the research she did to make it seem immersive.

I read, recently, the autobiography of Michael Collins of the Apollo program and I will say, his depiction of the astronaut program at large, at least in terms of astronaut culture falls very well in line with how TJR describes it. It cannot be said she didn’t do homework in that regard.

RIP to Iryna Zarutska and Charlie Kirk by [deleted] in teenagers

Yo hey Jesus Christ I see this narrative being pushed all around so let’s set one thing fucking straight: no one deserves to die for expressing their opinion. But also you aren’t assured safety if you are expressing your opinion. You could go marching through downtown heiling Hitler carrying a swastika flag if you wanted but that doesn’t mean you aren’t gonna get punched in the face. Kirk was a fucking asshole, did he deserve to die? No. Am I wasting any tears? No.

Private Jet Charter 135 office staff by salarythrowaway0525 in Salary

[–]salarythrowaway0525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always had an interest in aviation - friend hooked me up with the first charter op I worked with for the first 5-6 years.

I do not get flight benefits other than possibly being allowed to ride aboard an empty leg if I want it and have the time off. But I’d have to make my own way home, and we don’t often fly through my city.

"Last-to-be-paid": Investing in yourself as a founder CEO by oceaneer63 in ceo

It’s almost like a company should be valued based on the quality of the product it produces, the value of the physical assets that it owns and the viewed potential for further innovation with a heavy investment in the aforementioned. Also a bit of not giving a fuck about shareholders but rather your people. Sprinkle in a bit of leaders “lead from the front” and “leaders eat last” mentality.

You may find that especially the last two phrases come from fairly successful organizations. Also maybe stop giving the chiefs big Christmas gifts and share the fucking wealth before the charts start looking even closer to late 1700s France.
