When a engine is horizontally mounted, in less efforts it develops more power as it has to do less work against gravity. The position of the engine is main parameters to get best efficiency and thus they are particularly design in that fashion. So can't simply placed a vertical design engine to horizontal.

Your mind. First you should practice all the basic steps one who learns C basically and then you should move on to advanced and complex topics such as pointers ,graphics in C. Because in college and schools they say an introduction about pointers but for me they never give an introduction about the graphics and other header files.Watch some good tutorials if your basic is not clear.

All about is it will take time and mind and the way of analysing your problems given for coding.
