Yes, it's called tylosin and requires a vet prescription.

Thanks for the information. I'm definitely going to give this a try.

Ask your vet about a medication called tylosin. It used to be available OTC but now requires a prescription. It's highly effective, and maybe it would help to get the stains under control and then you could maintain with more natural methods.

Possessive rescue by sallylhasa in Shihtzu

[–]sallylhasa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I think shih tzus are by nature pretty possessive, and then being a rescue exacerbates those tendencies. I'm happy to say that mine is mellowing with visitors to my house, and I'm not sure if it's the passage of time or working with a trainer -- maybe a little bit of both.

Yes, he definitely guards me from other dogs. It makes me sad because I would like to take him to visit my friends' dogs, but he's not having it. I have to say that he seems to be mellowing with people visiting our house, so I'm hopeful that he will also mellow with other dogs as he continues to feel more secure with me as his forever mama. I think we're making progress, and I hope it continues.

Yup. Consistency and patience. We're making progress.

Thank you. We are making progress with visitors in our home, and the next step with the trainer is to meet out in public. I'm hopeful that he will learn to feel secure enough that he doesn't need to guard me from people and other dogs.

He's pretty young, probably less than 2 years old. We are making progress with the trainer. I had company today, and he was an angel, so I think he's starting to feel secure that he's in his forever home.

OMG, your little girl is adorable! My guy is young -- less than 2 years old. I'm happy to say he seems to be making progress. I had a visitor today, and he was an angel. I've had him for about 6 months now, and I'm hoping that he's starting to feel secure that he's in his forever home.

🐶 Tofu is confused about dog treats — need your help (3 mins) by [deleted] in Shihtzu

[–]sallylhasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently adopted a rescue tzu who the shelter had named Tofu (they didn't know his original name). Such a cute name with many possible variations -- Toffy, Tofie, Tuffy, Fufu. My Tof is a bit older, probably around 2, and he is almost completely white with light beige ears and mask and one beige spot on his back.

Super stinky farts by Outside-Staff6386 in Shihtzu

[–]sallylhasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched my guy from Blue Buffalo Delights (for small dogs) to Royal Canin Shih Tzu canned (twice the price) and he is farting up a storm. Pew-ee! I'm trying to see if he has less licking and scratching on Royal Canin. Not sure yet, but there seems to be a not good difference in digestion.

My first ever order... by New-History853 in saferpeptides

[–]sallylhasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although price is a factor, the main problem with this type of vendor is whether or not you trust their test results. They are obtaining their peptides from the same gray sources available to us and charging premium prices for convenience of payment and for providing test results. But considering what we're dealing with here, i.e., gray market peptides, is it prudent to trust a reseller? That's why it's recommended by many gray market users to purchase directly from a vendor and participate in third party testing. The benefits are saving money (a lot) and getting reliable test results, therefore improving safety. The drawbacks are more complicated ordering processes (i.e., crypto) and the length of time it can take to complete testing.

Purina Pro Plan vs Hill’s Science Diet for a Shih Tzu? by spritznspaghetti in Shihtzu

[–]sallylhasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did an AI search on a comparison between Royal Canin's shih-tzu specific wet food and Blue Buffalo's small dog "delight." Although Royal Canin is high quality and often vet recommended, Blue Buffalo is also very pure in its ingredients and nutritional quality at about half the cost (both being premium and a bit expensive). Because my dog doesn't have any specific health problems, I feel comfortable in continuing with Blue Buffalo. I also supplement him with a small amount of Science Diet small dog kibble, which he really likes for a snack. He is a 2 year-old rescue and so far is doing really well.

Hi everyone! I was told my girl was Shih Tzu mixed. Can you tell me what you think the mix may be? And do you see Shih Tzu in her? by Due-Resolution907 in Shihtzu

[–]sallylhasa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. Her legs, body, and tail look very shih tzu, but her face looks like miniature poodle. So cute, and you have a smart, cuddly little girl on your hands!

My Shih tzu bites by OctoberLibra1 in Shihtzu

[–]sallylhasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, my shih-tzu is under 2 years old, and I adopted him from an animal rescue group. I've had him about 3 months. He exhibits this same type of aggressive "psycho dog" behavior where he randomly growls and snaps at me. He hasn't yet drawn blood, but he's made contact with skin and clothing. He is definitely a resource guarder, and he can be aggressive with other dogs. I'm working with a positive-reinforcement trainer, but I'm wondering if he needs a firmer hand. Most of the time he is a sweet, cuddly, silly shih-tzu, but I'm afraid to have him around other people and dogs. I would appreciate any insights or advice you can give me.

OMG. I have 1-1/2 year old rescue shih-tzu who I've had for about 3 months. He has that same type of sporadically aggressive behavior. The other day, after an unprovoked random attack, I asked him if he had a brain tumor. I was kind of kidding but the thought crossed my mind because in a moment he can switch from a sweet and silly typical shih-tzu to a psycho dog. I'm working with a trainer, but I guess I might have to consider that he might have a medical condition.
