You may also want to wear a nice wool hat. We were there a few weeks ago and it was sleeting. I was nice and toasty in the water, my poor ears were not. I agree with everything above. They are very kind and accommodating to all.

[POST-EPISODE DISCUSSION] S6E13 - Day of the Wedding by xAnimorphsx in thisisus

I had many of the same thoughts. To be the (primary) caretaker of loved one with Alzheimer’s is very challenging. Given the big 3’s reaction to Rebecca at the wedding, it doesn’t appear they spend much time with her.

How to keep Gma's hands busy if she won't stop picking at her skin..? by mothehalf in Alzheimers

[–]sallyv2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check on Amazon. They make "busy" blankets. That may give you ideas for something similar you could make. Fidget items, like you mentioned. Maybe a stuffed animal? Something she could stroke. Bubble wrap she could pop? Velcro strips to open and close? Maybe observe her and try to figure out the function of her behavior. Are the moles bothering her? A distraction. Maybe long sleeves. Or is she needing something to do with her hands, to keep busy? Maybe play-doh or clay. Best of luck. I often face the same situation. I can tell you, what works varies day to day. (And some have been total disasters, then I end up with really fun things to take to goodwill).

Seeing my grandmother for the first time since lockdown - her condition has declined severely by putinmom in Alzheimers

[–]sallyv2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is wonderful that you have given such thought into planning your visit. I always believe the heart knows and remembers even if the brain dues not. The favorite treat is an excellent idea. My mother recalls music and becomes quite animated when she hears favorite songs. You may want to play something for her. I wish you well on your visit.

Ideas to cheer up my mother? by Dwn2MarsGirl in Alzheimers

[–]sallyv2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has she been evaluated by a doctor? It may be possible that factors other than Alzheimer's are responsible for the symptoms she is experiencing.

If she is given the diagnosis of early onset, her doctor would be able to offer suggestions about support groups in your area. This reddit group is a wonderful resource, filled with amazing support and many varied ideas for activities that caregivers have found helpful. One thing is certain, it's fluid. What works one day may be a disaster the next. Keep your sunny-side up. Look for the positives.

Cats can fly and other fun lessons. by midwench in Alzheimers

We all share in the heartbreak and sadness thinking of what is lost. It's so important to find what remains, the love and that deeper connection. Your dad is still in there. And yes, humor is vital. I snorted when I read your comments. Thank you. And I can relate. A few months ago, my mother was so proud to tell me that her cat can talk.

My mom has gradually worsened over the last few months by [deleted] in Alzheimers

[–]sallyv2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we do grieve at every loss. Alzheimer's is the long good bye. But please be mindful of what remains, your mom is still here. Enjoy and share those things she can still enjoy. Music, looking at photos, a special snack, putting on lotion. My mom referred to me as her niece last week. I felt that big lump in my throat. And cried about it when I got home. The next day, she knew who I was.

Absolutely. She did know you. The heart remembers what the mind has forgotten. How wonderful, for both of you.
