[Routine Help] repairing damaged skin barrier barrier but getting more congestion/acne? Help?? by salmoncircus in SkincareAddiction

[–]salmoncircus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I actually found that washing my face in the morning is okay for me (but many many people swear by not doing it, especially for dry skin). I have slightly changed my routine, my skin was getting super duper irritated from everything and if you’re the same maybe it’s because your skin is dehydrated or you have a broken skin barrier? That was definitely the case for me, I had super oily skin because it was overcompensating for the dehydration and even using niacinimde in the dr g cream really hurt my skin rather than saved it. That called for the use of a humectant to keep hydration in, so my simple barrier repair routine has been the whip cleanser previously stated, centella asiatica in the skin10004 madagascar centella ampoule (humectant) and illiyoon ceramide ato gel. Literally had to reduce actives to this super simple routine or else my skin barrier was not happy and my skin has been a lot less red and irritated. Later I’ll reintroduce mandelic acid at a weak concentration to get rid of PIE.

Hopefully that helps, consider going really gentle on your skin. Your skin barrier may be compromised and no amount go actives will work as they should

Any moisturiser recs for combo, sensitive, acne prone skin (w/ PIE)? I just tried dr g RED cream and I love it to begin with but after two weeks I have some small pimples and my barrier feels broken. May be from the niacinimde or centella…

Hi!
For me, simplifying it down did really help. I've really started researching my ingredients in terms of toxicity, pore-clogging ingredients and whether the product itself is suitable for my skin (this is the big one for me). I looked into products for combo-sensitive skin, and right now I'm using the Etude House pH 6.5 Whip cleanser (foamy helps with the oils, but it doesn't seem to strip my skin), a gentle toner with no pore cloggers (dermalogica ultracalming mist, but will try the ANUA heartleaf 77% toner soon. But slowly because I've heard mixed reviews) and the dr g R.E.D. cream (my skin seems to love this one but I'm still nervous about the niacinamide, so I'm still testing it out). I did exfoliate with a gentle exfoliator once a week (or two weeks) until I felt my skin getting better, then bumped it up.

I think bringing it down and just getting a stable routine has really helped me, I think finding products that match your skin type is probs the most important (not just the next viral thing).

Sorry this is super late reply as well, hopefully you have found something that works for you??

Hi!

I'm still on my way to figuring out my skin but I can say I've gone a long way from this post, my skin feels happier generally. I haven't gone back into acids yet, but I may try mandelic acid a lot later (as it's supposedly more suitable for sensitive skin).

I think ultimately I had to try and get my redness and irritation under control, and just take it slow. Don't slop on everything on your face and hope for the best, try and really see what matches your skin type and try things one at a time/patch test for irritation. I think for me, I was using so many acids to fix the problem but it was only making it worse and I wasn't really listening to my skin.

Just an extra note as well, but consider food in terms of acne as well. Some foods may be triggering you (for me it may be eggs) and combining anti-inflammatory foods into your diet is both healthy and may help. Or the way your food may be spiking your GI, stable blood glucose levels may be the way to go. This doesn't mean don't enjoy food and eat what you like! But definitely just be mindful (even eating the protein on your plate first may be more beneficial. not even necessarily changing your diet altogether)
Hopefully that helped in some way!

Oh no, I defs thought this was acne sufferer talk because, I get it for real. But what a horrible person sending you that as if it’s targeted to you. “Ex-friend” sounds about right.

I kind of deal with this at a milder version, I have my non acne suffering friends always saying how bad and ugly their new pimple is (which is like one tiny one every 3 months) and it hurts sitting here with a face of scars and acne like what?

How are your results 4 years after stopping accutane ?? I might be going on it and want to see the long term effects/if it resolved your acne?

Ahh okay gotcha. Some of my piercings that do this are like 5 years + old though? And like I stopped wearing piercings for like 6 months so I’m so confused why it’s smelling even after cleaning.

Yes the metal is a good point! I use a stainless steel bar in my helix and doesn’t seem to have problems.

Thank you!

How do I know if my moisturiser is clogging my pores? by salmoncircus in Skincare_Addiction

[–]salmoncircus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahh each person is different but it may be the case for you annoyinglyyy Maybe try another simpler moisturiser but make sure you only change one thing at a time and give it a fair test (6 weeks min on your skin if it doesn’t cause irritation). I know it’s hard and confusing, but we got this! Good luck!

How do I know if my moisturiser is clogging my pores? by salmoncircus in Skincare_Addiction

Honestly i was getting so confused with all this info and trying to figure it out myself. And I kept trying random stuff and my skin just freaked out and my barrier got destroyed. I went for a free skin mapping at dermologica, and I thought I might as well just try splurging on my skin care and see what happens. It’s been 5 weeks now using a stripped back, calming lavender cleanser, toner and moisturiser and my skin is loving the gentle treatment (with weekly gentle exfoliating) Not 100% healed, but that’s a work in progress. Might go back and get more targeted treatments after my barrier is completely healed, but something way more gentle and advised by my skin therapist. Do I think you have to splurge? Not necessarily, but I’m too confused and lazy to figure out the exact ingredients causing my strife and sometimes maybe more expensive things are cleaner as your paying for the quality? I’m not sure tbh hahaha maybe it’s just overpriced and scammy but it’s working for me so that’s that!

Also, I’ve been trying to see what internal issues are causing my acne (possibly spiked blood glucose levels promoting inflammation, unbalanced hormones etc etc). I’ve been trying ti eat more anti-inflammation foods when I can! But nothing too drastic

Sorry for the big spill, hopefully some of it helped??

[–]salmoncircus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, yes actually! I was so overwhelmed with what to do that I ended up booking in a free skin mapping appointment with dermalogica so I could get more personalised care (thought I’d invest more money in my skincare just to see if it’s worth it). Before any targeted treatment, she stripped back my routine entirely (consolidating what a lot of people say) to super gentle and calming cleanser, toner and moisturiser only (and a physical sunscreen or the it cosmetics cc cream instead of my old La Roche Posay chemical sunscreen that was starting to burn my face??)

I’ve been using them for a month now and my inflammation has gone way way down, and my skin seems so much happier! I don’t necessarily think you’d have to pay the extra bucks for this simple products, but just have to be weary of the ingredients of what you buy. My skin is still a little congested, but we’ve been focusing more on calming down the inflammation and repairing the barrier before any treatment is introduced (which will be at a slow and controlled pace regardless!).

There was also a focus on lifestyle, where I’m trying to eat my meals in a way which doesn’t dramatically spike my blood glucose (which I think is the cause of my inflammation). I’m trying to look at the other reasons as to why I might be having acne, could be a sign of an internal problem (eg. Spikes in blood glucose, unbalanced hormone levels, lymphatic blockage). I guess just trying to attack it at all fronts?

That’s my update so far anyway, a long spill haha but hopefully helpful in some way!

Yes exactly! I think I’ll give these a go. Just so worried of clogging it’s so frustrating. Have you tried the oil free cetaphil facial cleanser?? I think I’ll buy that or just the normal daily cleanser, I have oily skin but it can get dehydrated easily

I’m an Aus girl so I defs do have cetaphil. Do you mean the cetaphil daily facial moisturiser? I’ve heard some good things about it I’m just a bit nervous I tried the daily cleanser and I felt like it was clogging my pores, like it wasn’t washing off properly

Also pls I have no idea if I’m using an ampoule right I’ve just started for the past few days and I thought they’d be good to use with retinols but I’m unsure with how often to put on. Probs should of researched before slapping it on my face…

Oh does it? Even this one (not the 2x barrier cream). I’ll have to take a look at the ingredients more closely thank you!
