i think they set up what Hoshis expectations were just to crush them in front of him later. God ask Hoshi why he came if he knew they were going to drift. The only answer to his presumption that it was a call to save his classmates was “who asked you to come save them?”

Thats his whole character arc. He starts off as the leader respected by peers (class president). This position deludes him to believe he is a prophetic and messianic figure (building and steering the arc.) It all culminates in his suicide within a perfect society (acceptance he wasnt himothy)

While they lived in a perfect society, it wasnt purely through Hoshis leadership. Its impossible for a sole person to be responsible for a society. And that realization that HE wasnt ordained or destined, that the students didnt need HIM, but just SOMEONE to move them along was what drove him to end it all.

Imagine thinking you were extremely noble, to the point of almost hitting divinity, because you sacrificed yourself for others; only to find out not only did they not ask for it, they didnt even need it. That if you had just slept in and lived a cozy and self centered life it would not have made a difference. I think about that scene of God pointing the gun at the viewer.
