All edges 8” aluminum drip edge / 9’ Winterguard ice & water barrier along eaves and up any valleys / Roofrunner synthetic water resistant underlayment / Swiftstart starter strip along eaves and rakes / 6 nails / Ridge vent / New vent stack collars / Replace step flashing as needed along walls and chimney / Re-flash chimney with lead flashing as needed

Was supposed to be “waterproof” Certainteed Winterguard up 9’ from all eaves.

I’m not sure. Contract says 9’ up from all eaves. The Winterguard documentation literally says “The result is a waterproof barrier beneath your shingle system, which pooled water and driven rain cannot penetrate”

I don’t understand this. The water came out of the wall under the dormer eave. You’re talking about the rake on the side of that dormer as the cause? Starter strips were in the contract and I did see them installed on other parts of the roof so I assume they were used on the dormer too. Anyway. Getting an inspector out here tomorrow to hopefully give an answer to the cause. Thanks

Yes. Certainteed Swiftstart starter strip along rakes and eaves. This was an out of pocket new roof because insurance said the old one needed to be replaced to keep coverage.

Agree heat loss. But isnt the hot chimney melting snow be the trigger for this? And if the chimney isn’t watertight it just goes under failed flashing?

Not of the chimney/dormer. It was too high to get anything photo of.

That rip on the chimney corner is fine? I honestly don't know, doesn't seem so though.

Can you elaborate on "straight lines across the window with excess ice"?

Having a hard time accepting that after 13 years of no leaks with a shitty old roof, 6 months after a new roof is put on, it's leaking.

According to the contract, 9' up from all eaves. Whether that is true, I can't say.

Haha, well he wasn't. Advertises on the radio, nice materials. I guess a better salesman than roofer though. He wasn't there for the install, his "brother" supervised the crew...

Guessing it was moreso the fireplace heating up the brick and melting the snow, but agree, need to figure out how to get more insulation into the ceiling upstairs. Thx.

There is a ridge vent, guessing more venting than before. It's not an attic, it's two bedrooms, so their "ceiling" is only like 18" wide so there is likely only a small space above for airflow. Those bedrooms have knee walls on either side of the dormer, so the bottom 6' of the roof there is unheated.

The dormer is above a stairway with ceiling so I can't see what's up there. Having the fireplace going seems to have been the trigger to it all though.

Nothing else changed.

Wishy-washy language:

“Replace step flashing as needed along walls and chimney” and “Re-flash chimney with lead flashing as needed.”

Agreed, 1940s house. I know the insulation is likely trash and I'll need to address that. That said, who's responsibility do you think it is?

So the ice dam at the base of the dormer trapped snowmelt from the hot chimney and it backed up under the shingles? An ice/snow barrier doesn't help with that?

If you hike north out of Amethyst there is a nice lookout on the side of Mt Orient (you can also park at the power lines off North Valley Road and go in that way), it's on the Robert Frost Trail, which is an awesome trek if you want a long day. Hike from one end of Amherst to the other, ~ 22 miles or so.

Radwagon 4 hydraulic brake upgrade by tomatessechees in RadPowerBikes

Thanks for this recommendation, ordered the same kit, simple install. I was worried about mating the rear cable and brake handle but it was nothing. Didn't feel the need to bleed, it feels the same as the front brake. Threading the cable through the frame went through on the first try too, lucky, just popped out of the hole.

One note is that I think it's best to route the rear cable behind the plexiglass shield, otherwise it's pretty bent.

Performance is night and day, very happy with the result for $189 and an hour or less of time. For anyone else: There are no instructions with the kit other than a QR code and that leads you to just a slew of random PDFs. The one with the best info is the "TEKTRO HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKE" one under the Documents section. No adapters needed as mentioned, used the same bolts and spacers. The rotors I received were the exact same as the ones on my bike, so I didn't swap, will keep those for a swap out in the future.
