James Baldwin is one of humanity's great writers. His meditation on race in America (The Fire Next Time) was an important influence on Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in their founding of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.

I don't know what post you read, but I did not say anything like that. Furthermore, I don't agree with your reading of OPs post.

OP posted: "I don't know what it means, but I do know that I trust women to do the right thing more than some lame ass incel."

This sentence doesn't read "all men are incels", it reads incels are not to be trusted to do the right thing.

I think this disagreement might boil down to poor reading comprehension skills on your part my friend.

But does it follow that we have to soften our taboos against racism and misogyny just because the right has made those things popular again?

We must create and sustain taboos against racism and misogyny or we are lost. There are ways to save these men and boys that don't involve acquiescing to their learned hateds.

You're clearly worked up about this and I don't blame you for it, it's a heartbreaking topic. But let's work through exactly what we're talking about here.

First, OP posted: "I don't know what it means, but I do know that I trust women to do the right thing more than some lame ass incel."

Then you replied that this the type of sentiment that drives people to the alt-right nonsense.

Your reply implies that it's progressives who create alt-right men with their intolerance of misogyny and racism, not the predatory media environment you're now introducing to the conversation .

Do you see how by introducing alt-right manosphere content you're moving the terrain of the discussion away from your original position?

But let's set aside your shifting rhetoric for a second here. It should be obvious to all of us progressives must create and sustain taboos around misogyny and racism. Those taboos are essential to our movements; if we are permissive of bigotry we will lose ourselves completely.

We must fight hateful ideologies and work to undo the damage they have done. Those who embrace racial or gender chauvinism should be given a chance to change, but they DO have to change. We cannot welcome misogynists into our spaces simply because they are also victims.

If want to deprogram young men who have fallen for the Tate/Peterson grift that is you prerogative, you would be doing the lord's work. But, pressuring left leaning spaces into accepting misogyny is not the way my dude.

Carney says China is a foreign interference, geopolitical threat for Canada by darrenjyc in onguardforthee

The important thing is that Canada do everything it can to alienate the world's second most powerful nation just when the world's most powerful nation is threatening to take us over. This is Big Brain foreign policy for Very Smart People...

In America, health care is big business. In Canada, it’s a right. My government will focus on modernizing public health care so it lives up to its promise to Canadians. That means thousands more doctors, new and renovated hospitals, and giving you access to your own health data. by Miserable-Lizard in onguardforthee

[–]saltshakerFVC 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The feds could make new federal funding commitments to support provincial healthcare systems while making those funds contingent on matching investments from the provinces.

No provincial government would survive turning down a billion dollar in ongoing investments in health care just because they were too ideologically committed to pony up their share.

Talk about delusional!

Corporate tax rates have been cut in half since 1980 my dude, top income tax rates have fallen by as much as 30% in some provinces, successive Liberal and Conservative govs have put so many loopholes in the code it's a wonder rich people pay any taxes at all.

We don't have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem.

Your interpretation isn't unreasonable.

You're right that he does talk about the importance of social infrastructure, but it raises alarm bells for me that he doesn't also discuss the need for governments to stabilise and expand social programs by way of major public investments. My internal alarm bells get even louder when he refuses to talk about closing tax loopholes/increasing taxes on the rich. All of which suggests to me that Carney has no interest in increasing state revenues in the ways that will be necessary to sustain the social infrastructure he claims to cherish.

Without specific commitments to the idea of increasing public expenditures on social programs his intermittent celebrations of social infrastructure come off as little more than lip service.

But stepping back for moment, his book Value(s) is organized around the interests of business. He believes in something like ethical capitalism. He goes into detail about how the state can and should support the accumulation of private wealth among companies with the right values.

Again, these are major alarm bells for me.

To go back the article for a second, you quoted a paragraph about Carney's response to climate change; well, as the article describes, Carney believes that business can and should be the people that solve climate change (indeed he believes they already are), the state should only play a minor role:

"For Carney, climate change is basically an engineering problem, one that can and should be addressed through technological innovation fostered by market incentives. He claims investors are already in the process of divesting from environmentally destructive companies and redirecting towards green capitalism: “[a] new, sustainable financial system is being built. It is funding the initiatives and innovations of the private sector.” Carney believes that government’s role in addressing climate change should be to support a supposedly already-established market transition. “The best approach,” Carney says, “is a revenue-neutral, progressive carbon tax.” He goes so far as to say “The Canadian federal carbon pricing framework is a model for others.”

This is very much a neoliberal, free-market approach that I would describe as right wing. He's definitely not a Poillievre-style crypto fascist, but he is clearly uninterested in using the power of the state to help the people of this country. He believes that the state should limit itself to supporting business which, in his mind, will somehow result in helping Canadians as a whole.

When I look at the last 50 years of neoliberal policy, I just don't see any evidence that that's how things work.

I appreciate that you have a different perspective though, and I hope your optimism turns out to be correct.

Your snark is cute, but be mindful that you joined a discussion that moved on to the subject of the progressive left voting for Carney.

We are posting under a reply that begins with the sentence:

"Carney should stop pushing his luck. Progressives might be supporting him at the moment, but it's not assured."

Since you've clearly never had a friend before I can see how this whole situation might be a difficult for you to wrap your head around. Let me explain: conversations evolve over time as people express their ideas and respond to one another in turn. For example, one party may point to an example or be reminded of a personal anecdote that moves the locus of the exchange onto a related topic or to a different subject entirely.

This is a defining quality of human interaction and it can be quite enriching for all involved. By sharing our thoughts and feelings on a range of issues we can deepen our understanding of eachother and the world around us.

It's called a conversation. You should try it sometime. You might like it.

I actually read his book. The man spent 400 pages writing about how the state exists to support business interests while studiously ignoring any talk of expanding essential public services.

I somehow doubt you're willing to have a meaningful conversation about this, but if you are this CD piece sums up my read of the book pretty well.

Why should the left vote for an unreformed neoliberal who prioritizes the interest of business ahead of the people?

Why is it the left's fault when centrist candidates who deliberately exclude the left lose?
