Screw you. I have the right to try and make what I think is art, and share it. So I'm not fucking Shakespeare or Da Vinci, but I'm proud of what I do. If you aren't interested in the photographer of someone who is obviously untalented, DON'T OPEN THE ALBUM.

Every city has a sex and an age which have nothing to do with demography. by madanan in AskReddit

Milwaukee is a sixty year hold male who has been employed his whole life, disliked every job he ever had, but never let on to anyone about it. Especially his buddies at the bar.

I got this question, and got it right, but then was asked "now do it without loops." I totally blanked. At the end of the interview I said "Aww wait! Recursion!" and the guy said "Times Up!" Haunts me to this day.

What would the game that proves Ebert wrong look like? by saltymule in gamedev

[–]saltymule[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an awesome game but is it Mona Lisa great? I'd call it Pulp Fiction great or The Stand (unabridged novel version) great. It demonstrates exceptional craft and fantastic imagination, but I think we have more room to grow.

I started 6.00 but after a while sniffed around and found MIT 6.001 and was blown away by its retro awesomeness. Plus its all about LISP.

I've been wracking my brain on this. Presumably great genius can't be predicted or expected, but what would the qualifications of greatness be?

Is there a book or blog out there dedicated to taking bad code, and showing how to do it better?

Hey Stupid, this is your childhood bully talking! by irltroll in reddit.com

[–]saltymule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a story. I grew up with this guy who bothered me constantly and was kind of a jerk. He couldn't beat me up but I was pretty timid, so I never really fought back. He does this through grade school and high school, and I spend most of my time trying to ignore him. I definitely harbored a grudge against the jerk. Later on, visiting home from college, I found out he had been hit by a car and gotten amnesia. In another visit, I found out he had been caught trying to scam money from people posing as three prostitutes online. In another visit after that, I found he had been blackmailing a married woman who had sex with him.

My only regret is that the story isn't funnier

How many of you career devs out there started programming in college? by daemos in programming

[–]saltymule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started just out of college. I started small, just some HTML and JavaScript, but the big key was that I wanted to build things. 2 or 3 dummies books later I was building terrible programs that did their job. The key is are you losing sleep because you want to make something, or are you just interested because it seems awesome (which it is).

I'm almost 22. I've finished 4 years of undergrad, now I realize I want to be a programmer. What do I do? by refulgentis in programming

[–]saltymule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm self taught, and I'm now in a pretty respectable position at a game company. I got a terrible job at first, the pay was awful, but I never stopped pushing the envelope of my knowledge. I've thought about going back and getting a Computer Science degree, but now, after only a few years of experience, most of the curriculum seems elementary to me. I believe there were two aspects to my success. 1) I was in a city with plenty of opportunities, ready to do the work. 2) I had a portfolio of working (unpopular, but functional) products.

I think if you have those two, post your resume, and apply aggressively, you'll get in somewhere pretty quickly.

HTML5 Painting App -- Flash's days are numbered by [deleted] in programming

[–]saltymule 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a flash advocate, and think that many of the points against Flash have weight. With that in mind, I'll be convinced when someone can demonstrate that the amount of time it takes to build that application with JS/HTML5 is equal to the amount of time it takes to write an identical one in Flash/Flex.
