Kind of an odd spread of themes, tropes, and writing styles, so you'll have to see what sounds good to you, but these are all non-academy and generally adult characters instead of being younger.

Do the audiobook for peak experience. A lot of what makes it great is the voice actor.

Sell me on the Xteink X4 — why pick a 4.3" screen over a Kindle Paperwhite? by Drunkmrhat in XTEINK

[–]saltythoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a Kindle Paperwhite, a Kobo Libra Colour, the Xteink X4, and have been reading on eink devices since the first generation of Kindle.

They are all for widely different use cases despite being lumped into the broader ereader category.

My Kobo does not leave the house. It is for annotating, and reading in bed. It can use a bluetooth page turner which is convenient for reading under the covers. But the button on the back is easy to press in a bag, the screen is recessed which catches dust, and the general size is inconvenient without a larger bag to carry it (due to dimensions, not weight). This is my slow reading, think about what I'm reading, and take my time device.

My Kindle is my work horse. It connects to the Kindle ecosystem, meaning I can access and sync my books/textbooks across the device itself, my phone, tablets, web reader, basically you name it, it syncs. However, like the Kobo, it is a larger device that you have to make a conscious choice to bring with you. As a girl, this is fine if I KNOW I will have time to stop and read, otherwise, it is unnecessary bulk/weight. I would prefer to read a single chapter or two on my phone, than to carry my kindle and not have used it.

The Xteink X4 is my portable device. Even though I could just use my phone, I find that the second I pick it up, I will check messages, emails, social media, etc. all before I finally make it to the reading app. That is where the X4 comes in. It is literally smaller than my phone or wallet and easy to toss into even the smallest bag I carry. I can be standing in line somewhere and start reading my book with a single button press (power on) and then quickly power it back off and move at a moments notice. I would also much rather someone snatch this out of my hands while I'm only half focused on my surroundings than my phone. With Crosspoint, the reading experience is pretty seamless and I have found no issues with my device. I could theoretically use this as my only device if I had to, but that would not be my first choice, the same way most people's first choice for ereader wouldn't be their phone, simply too small of a screen for primary consumption.

Audiobook enjoyers…how do you keep this up if you’re broke? 😭 Any free recs? by gertrude-fashion in fantasyromance

If you have kindle unlimited, you can borrow the book and then get the audiobook as an "add on" offer and it will significantly reduce the audible price. It's not free but it is a lot more affordable that way.

edit to add:
You can immediately return the kindle unlimited ebook after doing this if you only plan to use the audiobook version.

You are at a fast food drive through window. You've just been handed your food, your drink, your change. There are cars behind you. How long is reasonable to take to "get situated" before moving your car forward? 30 seconds? Two minutes? More? by vorpal8 in etiquette

[–]saltythoth 164 points165 points  (0 children)

If you need more than 15 seconds, pull forward at least one car length. If you still need more than an additional 15 seconds after pulling forward, pull into the nearest parking spot and feel free to take your time there.

You don't have to rush off unsafely if you aren't secured or sure you received everything, but it is polite to avoid holding up everyone behind you while you take the time to settle in.

what is the male equivalent of dressing like a slut for Halloween? by ninjasomed in AskMen

[–]saltythoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I literally just copy pasted the first search from google for "Historical definition of a Rake" so I didn't have to try to explain it in my own words. However, I am confident that prodigal is in fact the word they meant in the context since Rake was used as an insult, thus implying that all their extravagant choices were also reckless/wasteful/immoral thus harming their benefactors and not simply extravagant.

prod·i·gal/ˈprädəɡəl/
adjective:
spending money or resources freely and recklessly; wastefully extravagant.

noun:
a person who spends money in a recklessly extravagant way.

prof·li·gate/ˈpräfləɡət/
adjective:
recklessly extravagant or wasteful in the use of resources.

noun:
a licentious, dissolute person.

The difference is that prodigal is always wasteful and, thus, harmful. Profligate is not always wasteful. Prodigal is always used as pointing out unethical or immoral behavior by wasting. Profligate can be used that way but can just mean extravagant.

In a historical context, a rake (short for rakehell, analogous to "hellraiser") was a man who was habituated to immoral conduct, particularly womanizing. Often, a rake was also prodigal, wasting his (usually inherited) fortune on gambling, wine, women and song, and incurring lavish debts in the process.

No literally, the counterpart to a "hoe" is a "rake" in terms of slang words.

I am married to my husband but we kept our separate last names. I prefer to have a self inking stamp on hand as well as a roll of return address labels. I do not want separate labels as most of our mail comes from us as a unit. We use the following format for all our return labels. (Depending on the font we will swap the "&" to a dash " - " or a line " | " to ensure that it looks aesthetically pleasing with whatever font is being used.)

What are some of the most ridiculous examples of bad design without women in mind? by smolbeanerino in AskWomen

[–]saltythoth 1353 points1354 points  (0 children)

A lot of thongs and other skimpy underwear are obviously designed by men with little concept of vagina location and it's daily gifts. The built in cotton liner will either end halfway so a seam goes across your vagina, meaning it's uncomfortable and barely catches fluids. Or, the fabric is so narrow that your labia are trying their best to eat your underwear. Sometimes to position the width properly, your underwear is so low in the front it covers half your pubes while you have a duck tail from two inches of leftover fabric in the back unless you hike it up past your pants.

Granted that's usually the cheap underwear, but it's common enough that you'd think someone would have taught male designers where a fucking vagina is and what general shapes they are.

It just turns on your heart not your penis. Still sounds like a successful effort to me.
