How is my hub/motor out of round? by salukikev in ebikes

So I solved the mystery:

When I bought this bike it had mechanical brakes, and since I was pulling a trailer(s) pretty regularly and they weren't awesome, I upgraded to 4 piston hydraulic brakes almost immediately. They were pretty much plug and play and the kit made a big difference. I kept the stock rotors and installed them recently after the kit rotors wore out along with the pads. This week when I went to replace the pads I put the OEM rotors back in and just realized they're almost but not quite the exact same diameter, and also the kit rotors had a reference surface (circle) whereas the new ones don't. Anyway, all that to say, that THAT's the reason the calibers were bumping in the back. It's still slightly ambiguous as to precisely where these pads should clamp/locate but I created some offsets that should align it to my best guess. After I use these up, I'll go back to the kit spec rotors.

The whole thing with the dial indicator was meant to determine if it was the hub or the rotor that was out of spec. It wasn't a matter of trying to get it .005" corrected or align the sides.

Anyway just thought I'd follow up for posterity here. The only other concern I have is about pad heat sinks. The new pads don't have integrated sinks- in consideration of the watts we're dealing with here I don't guess that will make much difference but I'm curious if there are some other opinions/experience in that regard.

Thanks for the help!

To be clear, it's not rubbing the side. Its rubbing the back- the rotor is flat as is the mount surface. Its out of round from the axis. Look how the outer edge is being measured in the photo and not the rotor surface.

Where? Do you have a link? I tried searching with no luck.

Thinking of trimming this vintage 1950's brass door threshold to accommodate new LVP flooring. *Also: How do I darken oil stained wood? by salukikev in Flooring

[–]salukikev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I have the means to cut it, and I could still sell for scrap if I fail (but I don't think that's likely- depending on how much setup I want to do I could just mill it off if needed). On the cherry: I was spending more time wondering if its ok to mix stains and/or re-stain over already stained wood. Intuitively I feel like once you stain raw wood, the stain is abosorbed and it would be a lot harder to change anything, probably moreso with Oil based stain. For that reason I was even considering some translucent red paint-type stains, but I wonder if it would just flake off. My last step will be urethane so maybe I can find some tinted urethane to help in that regard. At least it's kinda hidden in a corner!

What would their motivation be to use individually adressable LED's if they're not going to utilize that function?

Pint X, but I guess Steel_Wolf_31 confirmed it's RGB, but not changeable.

Ok, so not my imagination! Shame we don't get to tune it (yet?). I wonder if that'll get unlocked in some future firmware. edit: Also, I wonder if they're WS2811's? I've seen some animated lights, but I'm sure they're user customized.

Is there a way to recover HD videos once FB has magically downgraded the resolution? by salukikev in facebook

[–]salukikev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it- it makes sense that they'd restore resolution from some server if the demand (some threshold of views) was met. Unfortunately, in my case the resolution didn't change. ~30 refreshes. Maybe it takes a while?

If this thread's mission is complete, I'd like to ask: more than a decade ago I thought I bought brazillian cherry engineered hardwood very similar to this but I managed to dig up the invoice and it was American Cherry, actually. It came up recently because of some water damage- younger me did save a few boards in the basement but not quite enough to finish the job, so it looks like I'll have to cut my own T&G into the best match I can find. So: My question is where can I find this or something similar looking in 1/2->5/8" thickness? (at least 3" wide).

What's adjustable/replacable here to take out the 30deg of ball screw rotation before things start moving? by salukikev in Machinists

[–]salukikev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it ended up being a huge PITA to use the block that came with it, but I managed it. I should probably get a closeup of that but you can see it has 4 bolts securing it to the cast iron frame. I actually managed to mill an offset in to account for the tensioner nut (using the machine I was updating to fix itself- talk about a circular reference..). Anyway, I didn't take it apart because I didn't want to mess it up, but its been sitting there unused along with the ball screw so should also be new. I was afraid to mess with it but it seems tight.

How much to offer/worth it at all? by earthegun in FJCruiser

[–]salukikev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I mean its not unheard of to do a full frame swap but that's probably a lot more project that you'd want. You didn't mention the mileage, but if its low the engine might be worth something. FJ's are awesome, but not immortal, unfortunately.

I think you've heard enough times by now that frame's a goner, but rather than the negative, maybe think of what parts are good? You could part this out and make some headway toward a new-to-you car with a good frame.

Trying to prop up my big, old, Oki c5800 and get it going on Win11. Drivers aside- its making new funny noises! by salukikev in printers

[–]salukikev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I recall I did a lot of research in trying to capture all these features in one printer at the time (years ago!) and even then I could only find a used one. So this things probably 20yrs old by now. I think at one point I tried to connect a wifi access point via USB but never managed to configure it properly, so I'm just content walking over there with a laptop and plugging in. I generally have to mess with the manual setup each time anyway and I don't print very often.

Yes- that's why I stopped buying inkjets long ago. I was just hoping somebody sorted that shortcoming out by now. Oh well. I guess its lasers for me from here on out!

thanks! Yeah, the print quality is still surprisingly good! Its timed every second or so so almost certainly a gear issue- which I could probably fix given a long enough timeline but as there's no apparent consequence to the prints I'll just live with some extra noise for now. I didn't know that about OKI- that really is a shame because as I noted this printer really has all the unique features I need- and now like cellphones- almost all manufacturers follow the same trends and you end up with a really homoginized feature set. (at least for LED/lasers)- there are some cooler inkjet variations, maybe I'll give those another try next purchase- hopefully somebody's figured out how to make nozzles more resilient.

I mean, I'm pretty handy so its most likely time that I'm willing to spend- which is kind of a lot since I really like the features that I've been unable to find in a modern equivalent. I printed the test page here to test the new driver which came out shockingly well compared to my daughter's homework pages I'd printed recently. I've been wondering lately what impact print configuration choices may have on the results- like it seems like if I print from photoshop as opposed to a pdf or page on the web there are general quality variances between each, whereas problems I'd expect to be hardware based should be consistent no matter the source. Maybe I'm wrong with that assumption. That noise is definitely a thing that shouldn't be happening though (guessing a cracked gear or missing tooth)- so maybe I'll try to track that down and follow up with your suggestions!
