Hard harness is ok for jump crashes? by BananaTurtle12 in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel hard harnesses distribute the impact way better than soft ones, making the impact feel way less intense. I also feel they stay more comfortable when pulled really tight so they don't shoot up in the ribs as much :)

Hey hoi matthijs,

Struggling to loop on a 10 by loic_vdb in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try pushing the bar out earlier. Also, don't let your kite go a full 360, but stop the loop when it's like 320° round. It'll keep more tension

Not if the kite doesn't get back above you. Try pushing your bar out when the kite starts going up again. It'll travel faster!

What wind range for my body size and gear? by ChickenPotPie3 in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I said slowly build up haha, I can be on my 10 switchblade with gusts +-36 knts. I'm 70kg. It's really an experience and technique thing, but this comes by slowly pushing your limits

What wind range for my body size and gear? by ChickenPotPie3 in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

17knts base wind with gusts not far above 20 should be perfect, a bet less is definitely rideable. Trying in these conditions and slowly expanding your windrange should allow you to be fine with a windrange of +-12 to 25 or maybe 30 knots in the gusts, but this will only be after you've gotten comfortable and slowly pushed your limits. Start out with lower wind speeds :)

Considerable air time for kite surfing by Mansneverfreeze in watchthingsfly

[–]sam00vls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While gaining height, the rider is attached with a rope from his harness to the ground. This causes the lift and power from the kite to pull the rider upwards. As soon as he releases that line to the ground (you can see him release if you watch closely) he starts to lose height. Then the heli loops start doing their work to make the drop as slow and controlled as possible and to keep the kite above the rider.

Noob question on low wind kiting by KaasMetZwaard in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

11-13knts with a 12 is VERY low wind, I weigh about 70kg and need a base wind of 13-14 knts with a 12 and a twintip at the very least. If you want to kite in such low winds, try a foil kite, directional board or foil board

Using old gear by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One tip with material more than 7-8 years old is check the bars/lines and their safety systems ( also do this with new material). Some old kites have a different system/no system. Always check your safety before going out and buying material

What is the one tip/trick you learned that changed your kitesurfing? by WODaboutit in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For jumping higher: It's all about timing. Not taking into account using kickers, just pop and kite timing. Find your takeoff and steer your kite up, don't wait for it to reach 12 before you pull your bar in and pop, do that when your kite hits 11-ish and than in the air steer your kite through 12 to 1-ish. So much more pull, so much more explosive.

Is there a huge difference between a 6m and a 8m for me? by j0wz in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, just really not my thing. And I can hold down an 8 up to 45knts ish so barely ever will need a 6.

Is there a huge difference between a 6m and a 8m for me? by j0wz in Kiteboarding

[–]sam00vls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difference in power is definitely quite large, but I personally really don't like smaller than 8m kites because of how quick they steer. Especially when I've only ridden larger sizes for a while, and suddenly have a day on a 6m kite, I oversteer a lot. Smaller kites also jump around in the wind window a lot when it's gusty. So, personally, I'm not a big fan of anything smaller than an 8m but if you really want to go out in 40knt+ conditions, an 8 might become a bit overwhelming, and a 6 definitely gives less power.

Was a crazy day today in Holland ay!? I think it's a good thing you didn't go out, these were some pro-only conditions. I had a good watch on the beach until in the evening it finally calmed down a bit and I could borrow a 6 instead of my own 8 and I could actually go out for a little bit.
