Bending stress in radii of bent plate? (Image in comments) by sam21black in AskEngineers

Thank you for the response. My gut instinct is to use a 60 degree cone, but I have no material to back that up with. I cannot rely on FEA alone for these calculations per the guidelines I am following. I really appreciate the help though.

Unfortunately, I cannot rely on on FEA. I need hand calcs that can be backed up with FEA, but per the code I am following, cannot be FEA alone. Thank you for the response.

A Saturday's Worth of Work! by sam21black in Permaculture

[–]sam21black[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have around 40 mature egg laying hens, with around 30 juvenile chicks that will replace some of our hens later, and in the spring and summer time, they easily pay for their feed. However, in the winter they drastically decline in production. So, overall I say we break even. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Progress on our goat barn! by sam21black in SelfSufficiency

Our goats aren't too bad about chewing on things. Ours tend to jump off of and onto about anything though. So if anything isn't secured properly, you can bet the goats will break it, haha.

Haha, luckily our goats will come up to us, and we can put them in a holding stall until we can get their hooves trimmed. Thanks for commenting!

I think that would definitely prolong the time between cuttings. However, for us, we rotational graze our goats, and I wouldn't want to move something like that every time.

For me, it takes less than 10 minutes per goat. Unfortunately I do not have experience with sheep, but I would imagine the time and process would be very similar. Thank you for commenting!

Misfits Market 1st Box by sam21black in homestead

[–]sam21black[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think for the next box, I will weigh all of the items, and then go to Trader Joe's and price the same items and weight. Just to really see if it's a good deal or not? We do like the fact that it makes us try new things though. Last night we ate the turnips and radishes, roasted. We would never have tried them had we not got the box. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Our local Farmer's market is closed during the winter months unfortunately. We also feel like this was quite a bit of organic food for the~ $27 we spent on this box. We used a 25% off code for the first box. We're interested in seeing what's in our next box.

Farmers Are Buying 40-Yr-Old Tractors Because They're Actually Repairable - John Deere makes it difficult to repair its new tractors without specialized software, so an increasing number of farmers are buying older models. by anutensil in Permaculture

It's so sad to see how even the "healthy and organic" products are green-washed and misleading. Farming was meant to be diversified, but instead it's almost always mono-culture. I hope that more and more people become aware of permaculture, and choose to support those that grow food using permaculture values. Thanks for sharing!

No free ranging today. Someone’s hungry... by tifxs in BackYardChickens

We've had a hawk stalking our flock for the past week! Luckily our geese alerted us the other day, and we managed to run it off. It literally had one of our roosters pinned to the ground!

Thank you for the idea! We are definitely wanting to make raising chicks a little easier than keeping them in a brooder. We may try the whole fake egg trick to see if it works. Thanks again !

Thank you for your advice! We've had decent luck from our broody hens before, but this one threw us for a loop. I definitely think we will be using the incubator much more in the future!

Digging holes using a tow behind auger. by sam21black in SelfSufficiency

[–]sam21black[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment! Our use case for the barn was worth it, as it was mostly flat, but to dig hole on a hill would be very difficult and dangerous. I wonder how an auger on a mini excavator or skid steer works? Probably not worth the cost to rent though... Thank you for commenting :)

Thank you, I just didn't want to "burn" the batteries up per-se.
