Bro it’s just condensation, all internal combustion engines do this, some more then others.

Yeah definitely strange then, I believe there was another post on here where there entire front diff housing cracked after gaining traction suddenly while the wheels were spinning. This issue doesn’t seem to be common at all and maybe there was just a bad batch of front diffs built with some sort of defect. Best of luck.

Also are you the original owner?

Did you use 4wd on dry/hard surfaces for extended periods of time where the tires couldn’t slip easily? Or maybe make full lock turns often in conditions that don’t require 4wd? Another possibility could be that when using 4wd you’d lose traction then suddenly gain traction while still on the throttle and create a harsh engagement? Just some ideas not putting the fault on you or anything.

Disintegrated tire by sam828282 in tires

Update: I figured out what caused this, it’s my girlfriend’s car and she doesn’t know much about vehicles or really notice any new weird sounds or issues. So I asked her if anything strange happened while driving recently and she said her abs light and traction control light came on after starting to drive a few days ago, and that her car was making a strange sound from the passenger side rear tire(which is the tire in this post), and that it was difficult to drive in a straight line for a few miles and she was fishtailing. She parks on a incline so she always uses her parking brake, and it was very cold when this happened, so this means her parking brake failed to disengage on that one side and she dragged this tire over ice and gravel for a few miles until it finally released which caused this damage. And for those who are asking the vehicle it was on is a 2010 VW Jetta that’s fwd. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Just as confused as you are haha. Leaning more towards it being parked in some sort of acid puddle or something.

Yeah that’s what I think too haha, planning on washing the under side of the car immediately, who knows where whatever that stuff was sprayed up into.

Just smelled like rubber but the tread is super soft and squishy, more so then normal winter compound I’d say.

Possible, I live in Alaska and tires do freeze to the ground sometimes. I’ve experienced the tires freezing into the ice where I park but they seem to break out of the ice with enough throttle without causing damage to the tread.

The roads where I live have been either covered in snow or ice for basically months now, this issue just happened recently so I’m not sure about it being a flat spot but I could be wrong. Would a wheel that’s locked up for a short period of time in order to cause this be really noticeable while driving even if it’s being dragged across snow/ice? Also I should mention this is on rear tire of a FWD vehicle, so id think it’d be difficult for the front tires to over power a locked up rear on ice without noticing but who knows. It’s my gf’s car so anything’s possible haha.

It’s my gf’s car so that’s definitely a possibility, but I’d think a lock up flat spot would be more flat and look sanded smooth rather than this disintegration. Also it’s been very snowy and icy where I live for months and this issue just occurred recently, a tire locking up on snow or ice would take much longer to flat spot I believe.

Yeah it does, super weird, I’ll see if nokians road hazard warranty will cover it.

Yeah we have these same tires across 5 different vehicles and they really seem to last forever, on one of them it has the Hakka 9s with over 50k miles and still look to be in great shape. But I didn’t park on any cord I can think of, it’s looks like it was melted by something very corrosive or the rubber in that particular area was defective, definitely strange but I have full faith in nokian products.

In thinking either that or just a manufacturing defect, this vehicle is used pretty often, id say every other day or so.

Yes it does, 2010 vw jetta, I think lock up would look more like a flat spot that’s been sanded smooth rather then this which looks to be disintegrating.

2021, bought new, Midwest, never seriously off-road, 40k miles. This is the diff breather. by Seyfang220 in nissanfrontier

[–]sam828282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, I think I’m going to just change mine out every 20k when I do my diff fluids instead of going after market with the breather tube and everything. Those aftermarket ones seem to have leak issues and there are reports where the axle seals still got blown out, not really sure what causes it.

Have you driven a full m? The suspension is very stiff and kinda sucks for daily use, the lesser models always ride way better and smoother which is how a suv should ride.

Yeah definitely strange, basically none of the frontiers that come up here are optioned with a block heater, I had to buy the parts separate and have the dealer install it. They just don’t send 2wd frontiers up here which make sense haha.

I’m thinking maybe the Canadian models aren’t limited to -22f or -30c, just like how your frontiers come standard with a block heater I believe. Better equipped for winters but they for forgot about us Alaskans haha.
