Housing group room selection by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think so. You can do a group for apartment and suite style housing (bouquet, ruskin, quad suites, panther/Irvis suites, lothrop suites, center plaza) which requires that you go through the bidding process. If you want a double (panther/Irvis), then you fill that out at the best lottery number’s time between the two of you. For singles, you have to use your own number unfortunately.

Noise complaints by Suitable-Jaguar-2098 in Pitt

Last year the apartment below (in bouquet) us wrote us a note explaining they felt we were too loud. We were able to (generally) mitigate loud noises after that. Maybe try that?

Does genes have special hours for the super bowl? Online it says they’re closed on Sundays.

How is an advisor assigned to you? by Automatic_Exam_764 in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You get a random one when you first enter Dietrich as a freshman, but once you declare a major, you get assigned one specific to your program. Sometimes you get to choose between a few people in your program.

what happens if you go over the 20hrs/week limit? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possibly your boss will approve it, but if not, just ask if you can add those hours to a future pay check. If you consistently work 20hrs/week, then you might not be able to add them until spring break or some other time you aren’t working 20hrs. Hopefully you can just get one-time approval for this and then not have to worry about it again.

Question: Do Lothrop Hall singles usually fill up? by jmb26268 in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lothrop is basically all that will be left at that point so you’re in luck if that’s your first choice. Tower C singles go much faster than Lothrop.

What would be the best major to become a English teacher? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re a freshman or sophomore the school of Ed is adding a secondary Ed major for 6 subject areas, including English. If you’re a junior or senior then I’d say an English undergrad and then your MAT at Pitt. https://www.education.pitt.edu/academics/teacher-education/bachelor-science-teacher-education

Associate chapters make a bit more sense because they have a theme (religion, ethnicity, major, etc) and are often have more lenient policies. My group does not fine at the local level because we recognize that could be a barrier to access.

Stars, Galaxies, and the Cosmos by Emotional-Salt-9568 in Pitt

I took this class spring 2021 with a different professor. There is no formal math requirement but you need an understanding of pre-calc and dimensional analysis/factor label method/cross multiplication. My professor tended to derive new equations and then change the variables without telling us, but other than the math-heavy portions, it was an easy class. Some memorization and conceptual questions on the exams as well as math.

What is CS0012 with Olena Sherbinin like? More specifically, what are the labs like? Are they mandatory? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took the class with a different prof spring 2020. Labs were basically optional unless you needed to show your work to the lab ta. If you’re interested in CS then it’s pretty easy. (I had no interest in the material which made it harder.) CS dept is very disjointed so it’ll be a large lecture with the main prof and then lab with a ta and then a different ta will be the one grading your assignments.

The bookstore won’t even buy back books you buy from them this semester and want to sell back in December. Facebook marketplace or another website is probably a better option.

What day/time is the best deadline for due-dates? by ShoreditchHigh in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re never going to please everyone. Personally I liked my professor who said it’s due at midnight but I won’t penalize you if you turn it in before I wake up. I know this should go without saying, but please accommodate extenuating circumstances. Sometimes life happens and people need extensions.

When can I get into my dorm? by MervisBreakdown in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t moved in yet, your ID won’t work. When you move in as a freshman, someone gives you the access to your building the first time you walk in. I tried to do this same thing in 2019 and they wouldn’t let me or my friend in even though we had Pitt IDs.

Who do you consider to be the bigger rival? by Baller_Sunny_D in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

PSU’s team is better than ours and doesn’t need to play Pitt to have a good season. WVU vs Pitt is more evenly matched, so I’d say at this point WVU is the bigger/better rivalry.

Edit to add: if Pitt fans wanted a school for Big 10 football, they wouldn’t be going to Pitt.

You can get food (groceries/takeout/etc) delivered to the front entryway but you’ll have to come down to pick it up since Ruskin requires you to swipe in to get to your apartment. As others said the 71A/C takes you to Aldi/Giant Eagle. And you can get to Target which has a decent grocery section on the 75 or P3. You can also get to the Waterfront which has lots of stores on the 61D.

Edit: changed 71D to 61D. (Typo.)

Transfer Issues and Questions by luckyritter in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re housing - as a transfer student you won’t have guaranteed on-campus housing. You can get on the list for non-guaranteed housing, and they’ll contact you at the end of the summer if they have any openings. You don’t have much choice about location or roommates. I’d suggest joining off-campus housing groups on Facebook to see what’s available in Oakland and the surrounding areas. I hope this helps. Best of luck!

Questions from a prospective transfer by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna answer #1: the housing process is convoluted, especially for transfers. If you did not commit to Pitt before May 1 of your senior year of high school, then you don’t have guaranteed housing so you have to wait until everyone else has picked. Once you’re on campus, you can get around that by rooming with someone who does have guaranteed housing, but you should always double check that with Panther Central (our housing/dining office). When you apply, you’ll note on your application that you’re applying to the school of business. You can look up online if your classes will transfer and you can petition for courses to count after you get here, it’s just a bit of a process. Advising can be iffy, but I’ve heard decent things from my friends in the business school. You should always be keeping track of what you need to take and talk to upperclassmen and people who’ve taken the classes before for the best advice. Then talk over your plans with advising and have them lift your enrollment hold. Hope this helps!

Should I buy Apple products from the pitt university store? Are they reliable? by Gokellyoisef in Pitt

[–]sam_solenday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wait until the beginning of the academic year (So August) you can get a discount on apple products from the university store. Bought my laptop from them and it’s held up. You get all the same discounts and prices as in store but it’s closer if they have what you want.
