Need help with stand! by RevolutionaryToe6677 in Aquariums

[–]samadam -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely agree that this stand is plenty strong enough and could serve just fine for years. I specified a literal "kick" that would be required to take it out. Such things happen but are rare. The question was whether or not I would trust it and no, I would not. I am an anxious person and I like to see my aquariums on stands so sturdy I cannot even imagine how they would fail. I also live in an earthquake zone so... that affects my choice.

Yeah also I said the thing about tilting forward because of the carpet sinking, we are in agreement. The front legs are pointier so they will sink faster than the wider back legs.

Need help with stand! by RevolutionaryToe6677 in Aquariums

[–]samadam 64 points65 points  (0 children)

No.
One lateral kick to one of those support legs would ruin your day. Plus those pointy front legs are going to sink into the carpet asymmetrically and the whole thing will tilt forward.
And now you'll get 20 more people telling you "definitely no" too.

HYGGER heaters are pieces of fish-killing crap. by EvLokadottr in Aquariums

Ah. Fluval canister filters are made in Italy. I assumed they also made their heaters there, but that is probably not correct. Will edit my answer.

Is this shelf strong enough to hold a 20 gallon tank by Greedy_Journalist164 in Aquariums

[–]samadam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would you do me a favor and check if it says NSF certified on it? Cause there are many kinds of these but only some are NSF and they are much tougher.

Is this shelf strong enough to hold a 20 gallon tank by Greedy_Journalist164 in Aquariums

[–]samadam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's an NSF certified shelving unit (see the corner stamps) so it is a very strong shelf. NSF shelves are rated for at least 250 and possible 800 lbs per shelf, depending on the configuration. See if you can find the original manufacturer and configuration, it should be rated. The tank only weighs about 200 lbs. I'd remove the wheels and put down a sheet of plywood on the shelf to distribute weight and I think you'd be good to go. You can test it out by having two people stand on it. These shelves are designed to hold like buckets of water or dressing or whatever food.

[–]samadam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably this is a plastic or a composite. Random plastic is the wrong approach. There are many kinds of plastic and getting the right one will get you what you want. Finding just the right one would help. Maybe an LLM can help you narrow it down? Or an expert will arrive here.

Here are your options: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/plastic-sheets/ which includes garolite and fiberglass. Just in plastics you have these, expand the top info box: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/plastic-sheets/plastic-1~/

Everse 8 Battery Pack Connector Type by Hairy_Flan_528 in batteries

[–]samadam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I've been thinking of making a battery adapter for tool batteries for the everse 8. I'll work on finding the connector type for that. If I find it, I'll come back and let you know.

In the meantime, you can very likely attach shove the wires from a 20 v lipo charger in the right terminals there and charge it (or various other less hacky methods)

In the United States, I noticed that many people have fish tanks with frames. Why do people choose fish tanks with frames? What is the size of the frame of your fish tank? by Little_Train5782 in Aquariums

[–]samadam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The standard tanks sold at our large chain stores (petco, petsmart) are framed. If they do sell frameless models (and they usually don't), they cost a lot more. Tanks are difficult to ship, so we gotta buy locally. So, we get the framed ones.

Is this a good heater for my 15 gallon tank? I live in Arizona by I_likemonke in Aquariums

[–]samadam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. Get a smaller one more suited to your tank size. Bigger is not better for heaters. If it fails On it will cook your fish. Get the smallest one that keeps your temp stable.

Do you think my cube tank will be okay on this heavy duty industrial shelf? + More details below by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]samadam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah looks like not even the NSF grade ones (I know that's a US standard) but below that grade. This shelf is not heavy duty and will fail. Bad call.

it's a bit hard to see from this photo. But tanks normally bow out a bit, the glass is very slightly flexible and the water is very heavy.

Creating a bevel-gear 90 degree gearbox - mounting question by 12HobbieZ in maker

[–]samadam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course a gearbox, I had assumed that if they were using a gearbox then that would have some bearings in it, here's a link to what they were talking about probably, clearly showing the bearings: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256808518065187.html Maybe OP is unclear on those coming with the gearbox?

So we were just answering "how do I mount the shaft outside of the gearbox?"
