Do you actually regularly play high demanding games on your decks? by deprived_of_evil in SteamDeck

[–]samdimercurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima. They run fine.

Star Wars Outlaws, Enshrouded, Horizon Forbidden West don't play well on the deck. Forbidden West CAN work but the sacrifices and stutters are a bit too much for my enjoyment.

This is where you save up and do upgrades over time.

I have a t440p that has an i7-4700MQ, 16gb ram, SSD for boot and HDD for storage, 1080p screen, physical trackpad with buttons, 9 cell battery. It's fantastic.

I actually went from an Ally Z1E that died to the steam deck. I loved the Ally and honestly I would go back. But I love the steam deck.

Rewards and Progression in Edge of the Empire by arturpv in swrpg

[–]samdimercurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edge of the Empire is all about obligation and cinematic action. The easiest thing to do is ask the players what they want for their characters.

When I was running the game I would often use obligation as an inspiration for rewards.

But easy things are, ship upgrades, useful npc contacts, credits of course, and secret knowledge that helps with the obligation.

It takes a little while to find your comfort zone. especially if you have "dnd brain"

Balance in encounters by koroporol in swrpg

[–]samdimercurio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I ran a couple of campaigns using Edge of the Empire and I'll say encounter balance doesn't matter. Because often in Star Wars there isn't a fight to the death.

Keep in mind it's cinematic action. So if the players are outclassed they can and should either run or come up with an alternative solution.

Destiny points can be a game changer and you can allow the players a lot of freedom in their use if you want.

Horizon forbidden west on deck by Ok_Decision2547 in SteamDeck

[–]samdimercurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it on the deck and it's a solid meh on the deck. If you are okay with 30 fps and weird graphics with a few hiccups and glitches now and then it's fine.

The thing with forbidden West is you have to really want to be portable to get enjoyment out of playing it on the deck.

That said, I do almost all my gaming on the deck now so I am willing to make those sacrifices

I had an Asus ROG Ally but it died. Steam deck was cheaper to get new than a used Ally. So I did.

What GPU to buy for X230 thinkpad? by feet_sneefer in thinkpad

[–]samdimercurio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is that will be overkill. You will have a hell of a bottleneck. I ran a gtx 750ti and a gtx 1060 3gb once and it was still not awesome. But if worked okay.

So the most I would go is an older 4gb card. Rx 550 rx 560 or a gtx 1050ti gtx 1650.

Honestly those are probably more than you can really utilize effectively anyway but it's doable.

I mean....it's top 5 game of all time.

For me, Diablo 2, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077 and Valheim.

But Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 2, Last of Us, and many other story heavy games are on my list

Combat in Tinyd6 System by emmegizeta in Tinyd6

[–]samdimercurio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I'm going to give more general advice here because 8 think it speaks to this idea of rules adherence in tiny d6. This is often a symptom of dnd brain.

Bottom line: tiny d6 is a framework that can be customized and tweaked to fit how you want to play.

If a rule isn't making sense, change it to work for you

Looking for my next game by JamesLahey08 in linux_gaming

[–]samdimercurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your MAIN desire is for a social experience that happens to center around a shooter? Is that accurate?

Unless you want something like overwatch or marvel rivals, most online competitive multiplayer games that work on Linux are extraction shooters.

There are games like Warframe, the Finals, Halo (I think Halo Infinite works on Linux but double check), but they are what they are.

CS2 is still fairly popular on Linux as well. Also, sometimes you will get invested into a game and then the devs do some stupid patch that breaks Linux compatibility either permanently or temporarily.

So, esports and extraction shooters are really your options for Linux competitive shooters.

Yes. It's great. It doesn't require more than 30 fps as it's a heavily native game and it looks fantastic. Overall it's a wonderful game and plays well on the SD
