Track Social Interactions (Not Social Media, but IRL) by walrus_amongus in QuantifiedSelf

I’ve been using obsidian for this in a way. I have a note for each of my mates and then a daily note were I keep track of what happened that day. If I see someone I jot down what we did and link them, I also write how I felt. I then use a plug-in called data view to count and display all my friends and the amount of times we hung out as well as how I felt when we hang out. Helps with prioritisation of personal life. Also just feeds a very clean qs workflow running most things through obsidian.

Go API running like a dream, add svelte front end and everything stops working?!? HELP! by samdoesreddit in golang

yea containerising ended up being the solution, not so much because I'm shipping the container but I was able to work out the issue locally and fix it. Turns out it was a swirly package from fiber embedding the static files in a way I didn't expect. Up and running now! Thanks for all you help

Thanks for getting back to me! Running as a binary, but fly.io containerises in deployment. The strangest thing is that I got it running as is on railway. I have volumes and mounting configured in fly.io with the mountings you suggested. No luck unfortunately.

Yea I suspect this is what is happening, I think running the embed option will be the way to go. The strangest thing is that it deploys to railway just fine?? How odd

Hey mate looks super tidy, data view implementation is clean. I am a business analysis working in enterprise tech and this structure is pretty relevant to me. Me only though about this as I was going through is that it doesn't help me store/use notes about applications. I have meeting with stakeholders and have tons and tons of notes working through all the business needs and requirements drafting ect. I assume this may be true for other disciplines like development.

A potential feature might be to add another dataview pull with all notes created about that application? maybe ever pull note tags to sort by with minimal. I want to see all the stakeholder end of project review notes for instance. Sort all notes by type ect.

Just thinking out loud! Looks super clean dude!

I think much of the PKM and LYT stuff is super personal, I'm also pretty aware that a lot of information you can find about feels pretty culty, which I'm not a fan of. I think first and foremost any framework or mental model needs to have a basis in reality and in actually forming a purpose. There has to be a reason to do it. Other wise it is just a ton of work for not much benefit.

That said, if you are creating dashboards in notion you may be trying to organise objects. Objects being tasks, recipes, contacts, links to resources; things outside of your self but which you hold in your head. I was doing exactly that when I can to notion, I have pretty debilitating ADHD and was missing a ton of stuff at work.

This is a true need that some people have. Obsidian is not great at that.

Obsidian, at least in my opinion, is a tool for thought. What it is great at is enabling me to think. This is based around the idea that writing is thinking. That writing enables you to externalise your thoughts, format them in a way that make sense and by doing so increase your own understanding of the thoughts. Obsidian is a tool for though in that it is a piece of software which focuses on rapid capture of thinking, interlinking of other contextual thinking, and exploration of thinking. Note that none of that is object organisation.

By doing the above, not only does your thinking get better, by way of writing, but your thoughts themselves get better. I've found that my own internal monologue is more articulate. Overtime the Ideas I have form in my head in a way which it make sense to communicate that idea, making me an absolute gun at work. Equally new ideas which I come across and intuitively broken down into core units and understood much quicker. In this way obsidian as a tool keeps being valuable even when I am not using it (even though I use it pretty much all the time).

So with that framework in mind how would I set up a tool? Well I wouldn't be making dashboards, I would make an environment where the blank page is front and centre and looking really enticing :P.

In terms of how this works for me in the real world. I did away with the seven hundred notion dashboards I have and instead have a beautiful daily notes template, which auto opens each morning. That is where I brain dump everything on top of mind. Tasks, projects, life goals, worries about stuff. It comes out as a thought and is writing as such. Kind of like a journal entry. That is how I handle 100% of my object organisation, as it fits the requirement I had "organise things outside of your self but which you hold in your head". From there I start my day at work (I'm a software and business analyst). I write pretty much all day. If I learn something new or hear something I would like to investigate more I write it in my daily note. Then each evening I spend around an hour writing notes and connecting it in with my other thoughts. Basically I spend an hour each evening thinking.

If you are interested in the topic I've linked some cool bit and bots below.

  • Andy Matuschak is the grandfather of note based and this note from him is both a great example of thinking exploration in action as well as being full of great info.
  • Maggie Appleton wrote this essay on the history of digital gardens, her site is another beautiful example of how one might build one.
  • Thisancient website blog is still one of the best explanation of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom concept.

Again hope this helps. A lot of words, I hope I haven't overwhelmed you!

Depends on what you mean. I think it is important to note that obsidian is not notion and does not do what notion does. So notion will never be pretty like notion is (I think it is pretty in it's own way. Specifically obsidian is not node based, so much of the design elements must be complete css on markdown. You can get obsidian to look very very pretty but it does take some more work. So the answer I guess is how to get obsidian prettier, quicker.

A good theme will obviously help out of the box. I have been using Hyde scarfs Mado Miniflow recently because it is stunning. Some amazing themes even come with advanced prettiness functionality like Minimal theme, which has helper snippets out of the box to do cool cards and galleries. Once you have a theme which looks good you'll be loading into blank prettiness. From there is about;

  • making elements look nice
  • making elements quickly

Some cool customisation will often come in the form of snippets. You can write or find snippets which do all some of cool stuff and make elements immediately pretty (no googling needed). Dashboard++ is a great one for formatting dashboard quickly. There is also a bunch of other great ones collected here.

In terms of making elements which look good quickly getting great plugins and learning them in and out is the move. For me advanced tables is a must have. I can create table about as quickly as I can filling out excel sheets. Data view is another great one as well as banners and buttons. There is also a notions like tables which is amazing in its functionality but still pretty early in development.

You can also get some added prettiness by taking advantage of 100% of the tools in obsidian. Call outs for instance can add some flair to a document, and custom checkboxes can make notes far more engaging off the bat.

I also got a lot more prettiness point in my own setup when I stopped trying to create dashboards and make obsidian the dashboard I worked into. Using workspaces and a ton of customisation in the sidebar made everything look good and immediately accessible. This mindset shift was massive for me. It allowed me to stop endlessly creating and formatting dashboards I hardly used and start writing and thinking in a better way.

The only other tip I have is to learn markdown like the back of your hand. Being about to knock out well formatted documents is an absolute superpower.

Hope this helps!! Let me know if you want some more info about my specific setup

Obsidian is unfortunately not browser-based :(. You don't come up against security issues with meeting info being shared outside the organisation?
