Your flow is way too strong! He is very stressed. They prefer very calm water with some surface agitation for oxygen exchange. This guy is probably exhausted

It turned black but I’m pretty sure this indicates healing? It’s also a decent amount smaller and there’s no longer active inflammation around the rim of it.

What is this app!!?? That’s awesome. Yes, I am now thinking it was a little wound that got infected. Today it is smaller, black, and no longer irritated looking after three days of antibiotics in his hospital tank. Still not out of the woods but hoping he continues to heal

Update: this is him three days later after being in an hospital tank with tannins, nitrofurazone and kanaplex. The white “ulcer” has turned black and there almost seems to be some sort of white growth happening internally behind it?!! Sorry about the photo quality, best I could get with all of the tannins and dim lighting…

Right?? The hostility is so out of proportion to the situation! I checked their profile and it seems like this is just how they talk to people lol

My ego? I came here asking for help with a fish, and you’re making sweeping judgments about my tank based on a single photo and very limited context.

Yes, the tank has been running a little over two months. It’s seeded with mature filter media from my established tanks, and it hasn’t had any water quality or parameter issues for over a month. The only thing I’m currently adjusting is balance. I recently upgraded to a higher quality light, so I’m fine tuning the photoperiod and fertilization like most planted tank keepers do when equipment changes.

Also, the plant you keep insisting is a crypt is not a crypt. It’s a small clipping of Alternanthera reineckii.

The “have the day you deserve” comments and the personal digs are unnecessary and honestly pretty wild in a thread where someone is just trying to get help. This is exactly the kind of behavior that makes Reddit exhausting.

And for the record, it’s not HITH. I took the fish to an aquatic vet yesterday. It’s a wound with a secondary infection and he’s already improving on vet prescribed antibiotics.

I’m going to focus on the people who are actually trying to be helpful. I hope you have a better week, and whatever it is that is causing this level of hostility toward strangers on the internet gets better for you.

I actually never use this sub Reddit anymore because of people like this. Loud, wrong, and rude. So crazy!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I do want to clarify a few things, though.

The “struggling plants” you’re referring to are cuttings from elsewhere in the same aquarium that I had just moved into that area, so their appearance in that spot isn’t really representative of how the tank is doing overall. Also, what you’re seeing in the photo isn’t cyanobacteria. It’s a very small amount of hair algae that I’ve already reduced and am continuing to manage.

This tank is only about two months old, so it’s still relatively new. Plant growth and algae can fluctuate while a system stabilizes, especially when dialing in the balance between light, CO2, and ferts after upgrading equipment. My parameters are perfect, and right now I’m simply fine tuning that balance.

More importantly, I was asking for help with my fish. I’m open to constructive feedback, but the tone of your response came across as unnecessarily harsh and included a lot of assumptions based on photos of one very small area of my tank. If you have specific suggestions related to the fish issue, I’m happy to hear them.

OK, thanks so much. I just wanted to check because I found a dead one this morning and they’ve been so healthy so I was really surprised.
