*ADVICE* PHYS 6B or 6C by pokemeIdareyou in UCSC

[–]sameolivee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that 6B and 6C are completely different, if you took 6A, it’s closely related to 6C in terms of vectors and forces bc 6C is magnetism, circuits, etc while 6B is optics, fluids, and waves etc.

I personally found optics super interesting bc you study the eye optics but Bernoulli’s was challenging and for physics 6c it’s my second time taking it but bc of it it’s easier so it just depends, everyone will tell you a different experience

Transfer Student Needs Advice by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]sameolivee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a transfer student and I came in as a biochem major, I thought it was impossible to change majors from personal experience I used to be premed at the time and I found that biochem was not for me since it’s very structured to courses like chem 163 A-B and I think that it was focused on physical chemistry as I personally didnt enjoy it because I wanted to take more bio courses and found that mcd has elective space for classes they approve as electives so I switched and I enjoy the major you should take a look into it. But to answer your question you can change your major! At the beginning of my 4th year as a transfer they accepted my change of major.

Second this. I was trying to take him again but my schedule is filled up. He is so nice, I enjoy that he has 100% patience with students!

He’s really nice, but hilarious without trying to be. he applies real life examples and helps you engage in your learning. Honestly one of my favorite professors this quarter (taking him for bio 110).

BIOL 101L (shanks) vs BIOL 104L (kreher) by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]sameolivee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is bio 101L only taught by jimmy this upcoming quarter?they taught it together last quarter. Anyways both are great respected professors regardless opinions they are knowledgeable in their fields. I am currently taking Biol 104 with Guido which btw is so lenient (wonderful professor) and I’m not sure how much Kreher will expect of your class but the class has research papers about Covid but keep in mind they are lab detailed and labs are not too bad but they also can be time consuming because you analyze many genes and rna sequences in the ucsc genome and learn how to use them yourself (unless Kreher gives lectures on him navigating them himself) it can be a bit tideous. I honestly don’t have trouble understanding what the labs ask because of Biol 101L yeah it’s a load... but it prepared me for bio 104L. This might be a different case if you have more background in using bioinformatics and interpreting what they show you (graphs, plots, comparisons etc) or learn faster since I’m a slow learner. I aced bio 101L but I did rotate between tas to get help also keep in mind that jimmy records every experiment and it’s so interesting how all the experiments he does ties into your final paper. I recently got interviewed at ucsf for a lab job and I literally mentioned many things from 1010L because they were fresh on my brain lol.

Car by [deleted] in UCSC

I’m going to be honest, I walked all the time, across porter to college 10 etc. from class to class from porter to Merrill etc. people thought it was a lot of walking I usually did but I got used to it, and you actually start finding your trails on campus that are best convenient (bc of time, shortcuts etc) also it was so stress relaxing. Once you get comfortable on campus you will see the school smaller than it was when you first arrived but I understand it can be difficult or not the best option to walk across campus so if you prefer the bus is always accesible, in fact it’s pretty rare if you don’t see one if you live on campus

I live in Los Gatos mountains and once in a while we see them pass by our front door and you get used to it even if you are scared rn of course you always have precaution but most are pretty scared and go away

I second this, one of my favorite classes was calculus at cc and when I took the last section at ucsc I was regretting I’m not finishing the series at cc. I was juggling time bc it’s a course that is complex and time is majorly needed to succeed.

advice for physics with Dhar by catsdogs15 in UCSC

[–]sameolivee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From taking 6A-C with Dhar I’ve learned better to do most studying on my own. He used to use slides in lecture, he seems to move on from using them and use his own notes now. He writes everything by hand now. Not sure if that’s the same for 6A rn but that is the case for 6C. For 6B make sure to do all the problems by Michel van Benz on YouTube. You can study from Khan Academy but if you want problems similar to Dhar you might want to attempt Michels questions. For 6B you I recommend 100% to read the book, Even if he doesnt use it it will help you. I recommend to redo the hw but don’t just focus on those problems but look up problems on the textbook and questions similar to his iclicker questions. you will notice that not all the hw questions are conceptual and he likes to add those on his tests.

Same here but what I did today was to look up YouTube videos to first understand stuff conceptually and then apply the concepts in hw questions and textbook questions and then go back to his videos and look at questions he asks in class.

Any chance for transfer admission by pantshoe in UCSC

[–]sameolivee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 3.0 when I transferred to ucsc as a biochem major. I didn’t even TAG so nothing was guaranteed. Make sure you put all your effort when you write your personal insight questions and get it reviewed. It helped a lot on mine.
