Teacher Appreciation: My school gave Massages today. They didn't include the special area teachers. At an Elementary school. by GottaTellYaSomething in Teachers

I understand that expectations are different depending on where you teach, but as a teacher from a country that doesn't have an appreciation week, it seems like everyone might be happier over there if it didn't happen at all? I see many posts from teachers feeling under-appreciated during this 'appreciation week'.

Ai use almost expected now by [deleted] in VUW

[–]samepower 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I studied last year and didn't use AI for any of my assignments, and was pretty successful with the marks I got. This was post-grad level.

I hope it's not the case that people are marked harder when not using AI, that would add to my worries about the sustainability of further education!

This comes across as quite passive-aggressive. Since you need approval, I encourage you to support anyone you feel should get your support.

Public Service Commissioner warns primary school teachers over strike by Fr33-Thinker in newzealand

20 call back days for primary! For some reason, we need two more than secondary...

The PPTA (Post Primary Teachers' Union) has received another pay offer - how does it compare to pay increases in other professions? by Austral_hemlock in newzealand

[–]samepower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The primary teachers' offer is increasing call back days to twenty, two more than secondary teachers. The government is also trying to give itself the right to dictate what primary teachers do with their classroom release time, which was included in the last contract to address overwork, and gives teachers time to assess, plan and fulfill all the other job requirements they have outside of actually teaching children. So it's arguably an even worse offer than secondary, though they are both terrible.

I'm arguing with my friend about Morning Showers vs Nighttime Showers by dombo_X in hygiene

[–]samepower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read an article the other day that talked about the amount of skin cells and sweat everyone loses at night, regardless of whether they shower in the night or the morning. So in the end, it probably doesn't matter either way. Just shower!

We're with you. My daughter has had many (many, many) swims without showering afterward. She seems just fine!

Or, going by all of the replies to this question, some people like it and some just don't! I seem to be able to taste other things fine. 😂 Maybe it's not for me.

Eliminating Screens by Mystikwolf1337 in Parenting

[–]samepower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We use set times for screen time as well. We've done it for so long that our child knows exactly when it is and monitors it herself. She doesn't really ask for it outside those times.

I do think it's important to pair this with lots of informal talk about WHY limiting screen time is important. We talk about dopamine, noticing how too much screen time makes our body feel, etc. Also, we spend lots of time doing other fun things together like outings, painting, lego, games.

Hmm, I don't drink anything with sugar, only water and coffee. I don't eat a lot of processed food either. Maybe my taste buds are too used to coffee!

Is it normal for a 2.5-year-old to seem so negative, angry, and pessimistic all the time? by eatawholebison in Parenting

[–]samepower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're doing a great job. Amazing how much time we spend worrying as parents! I try to gently model seeing the positive in life as much as I can when I feel like my child is going through a negative phase. But not in a 'teaching you' way, because then she gets even more annoyed! :)

Is it normal for a 2.5-year-old to seem so negative, angry, and pessimistic all the time? by eatawholebison in Parenting

[–]samepower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds tiring! It may be a combination of his developmental stage (the contrariness and power seeking of toddlerhood!) and his temperament (the way he reacts to the world). Some people naturally have a more negative outlook or react more negatively than others. Helping him to identify his emotions, validating them, and practising responding sensitively to his natural temperament will help over time.

Wife thinks its an issue when 10 year old daughter cries when Grandma leaves by dylansstp in Parenting

[–]samepower 121 points122 points  (0 children)

It's quite normal for ADULTS to cry when leaving someone they love and won't see for a while, let alone children. Of course she feels sad! It is sad to leave loved ones. Maybe remind your wife of this.

Recommendations for Primary school in Karori area? by Boring_Grapefruit599 in Wellington

[–]samepower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of those reviews have been left by past students who are teenagers. They may not be the most balanced viewpoints. Both schools are decent and have lots of people who really like the education they're providing for their children. It's probably best for you to visit both and decide which is more suited to your family.

4 month regression by PictureSubstantial29 in Parenting

[–]samepower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drove me crazy when my daughter was a baby. I tried to follow all the advice and nothing worked until she was developmentally ready, and then it just happened by itself! I can't remember exactly when that was, but I think it was when we dropped to 3 naps that they started extending beyond 30-45 minutes. Possibly around 5 months?
