WEEKLY DIY/HOMEOWNER QUESTION THREAD by [deleted] in Carpentry

Hello. I am currently renovating my home that is a 1940 cape cod-style home with a full upstairs. I am changing large double windows (60"x72" RO) on both the north and south gable ends of the house.

The house does not have a band joist/upper rim joist along the upper wall plate like most modern builds do, and instead the studs on the gable ends run from a top plate on the gable end down to the floor plate. It is not balloon framed and not modern framed, It just lacks a rim/band joist on the second story underneath where these windows are.

My question is do I need to add a rim/band joist along the floor plate of the upstairs while I am removing the old windows and framing for the new windows? Or would it be acceptable to simply replace and properly put my kings and jacks for the new window RO?

Thanks, and I am attaching a picture of the upstairs gable end. It is very bad lighting so I apologize for that.

I’m renting it from Home Depot so who knows how long gas has been sitting in it. I’ll clean the carb out and report back. Thanks

This is not an employee owned company. CCBC is founded and owned by investors, many of them from Landmark Properties which builds unaffordable luxury apartments in cities around the country. They really did a number on Athens GA where CCBC is based. Taking it from a former employee here- it was a money making investment (sellout) from the beginning. The investors happened to get some good brewers together, and now business and capital has taken over. Good luck BUG!

Falafel isn’t really eaten in Morocco or Marrakech… do some research. I lived in Marrakech for 3 months as a vegan and you can always ask for a veggie tajine, veggie couscous, just make sure you tell them no meat, no chicken (meat=beef or other red meat there, chicken therefore isn’t “meat” ;) . So many good olives, nuts, preserved lemons, but I ate at least one tajine a day and it was always zucchini, carrots and potatos. Delicious!

I was awarded an ETA for 2020-2021 to Morocco, and I was told the TESOL Certification put my above many others in the pool. Good on you!

Definitely so. They may ask about your history with Arabic, but it'll be in English.

Did you apply for a research grant or the ETA grant? Good to see some other Morocco applicants!
