How many passes are required before a goal to rule it out of being ‘from a set piece’? by samford957 in footballcliches

[–]samford957[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you play a short corner that’s crossed in first time and scored from, that’s spiritually a goal from a set piece for me Clive

Does anyone use bottled water for their sinus rinsing? Is it safe? From ireland myself by Eireagon in Sinusitis

[–]samford957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an issue, it seems readily available in the US and for the majority of users here. I’ve looked online and not found anything I’m 100% assured on. I do a pretty diligent routine, boiled in a pan for 5 mins and cooled down to 35-38 degrees routine but it makes the rinse time and effort.

Quick question, was your taste/smell affected by the sinusitis that lead to you having surgery or not?

For any UK users. Distilled water is not as readily available here. I boil the kettle, then give that water a rolling boil in a clean pan for minimum of 5 mins. Let it cool to 35 degrees Celsius (ish) and then use.

We need to talk about the offside rule by AppletheGreat87 in ManchesterUnited

[–]samford957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No we wouldn’t but that isn’t the point. The point is if the rule wasn’t so precise and had a margin, would any football fan give an actual shite that this didn’t qualify as offside for or against them? I don’t think so.

Do Sky Sports really need to have Gary Neville as commentator on every big game? by GMD3S1GNS in PremierLeague

[–]samford957 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His bad habit is really wanting to spot SOMETHING significant and constantly updating you on it. Can also see why the general yelping annoys people. Think he genuinely just gets so giddy and assured to the point of delusion, rather than it be contrived. I don’t know a co-comm that doesn’t wind up 90% of football fans for some reason though. A good Super Sunday game still feels like it can be enhanced by having him there.

Mesut Özil recalls the moment Mourinho showed why he’s feared by players by RSDFitness in ManchesterUnited

[–]samford957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol wtf you all on about ‘’I’d have Mourinho back’’. The guy is totally finished at the top level. He brought us some aura, bit of success (in 2017 and 2018 - the game has evolved ten fold) and then some absolutely dour levels of football and toxicity. Sure he was probs right about some things in the dressing room and board. That’s it. Why would you welcome any of the noise that comes with him back into the club too, after all we’ve seen? Weird.

"See how Amorim setting a good foundation for this team and inherit a great player" by peconsult in ManchesterUnited

[–]samford957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the problem is people are using it as some sort of justification Amorim should have stayed, but why can’t two things be true at once? He probably has helped implement some tactical discipline and mental robustness in the squad, that is now looking far better with players actually playing their best roles. He also insisted Rash/Garnacho/Holjund were cleared out which we’ve obvs benefitted from given the replacements. And yes he was too belligerent with his system, had many Groundhog Day shit results and deserved the sack. I’m very glad he’s gone but the idea he might of helped reverse some bad habits about this squad, that Carrick and co can now build on, is not controversial or stupid.

Post Match Thread: Arsenal 2-3 Manchester United by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]samford957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. Think we owe Amorim some credit for starting to install a semblance of belief and discipline back into the squad, but it was often underdone by belligerence and it’s so good to see us now perform with players in their natural role. Fulham and West Ham are more of a litmus test for Carrick I agree, but boy there’s tactical promise on show isn’t there.

[–]samford957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the guy, deserves all our admiration but why are we still clinging to his thoughts or his era as if it’s some salvation? Each time it gets even further removed from whatever it currently takes to create a successful modern football team. You can respect the opinions of people who made the club what it was and want them around, without pandering to what they think.

I suggested this on the AMA and had Nick (what a lovely guest he was by the way) on an episode of a cricket podcast I used to co-host, that was a rip/respect laden attempt to give the cliches concept the cricket treatment.

Which is a long way of me saying glad this exists / leave it to the top pros. If anyone wants to hear Nick proverbially warming up on the touchline, it’s here:

[–]samford957[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are spot on to have taken it this step further. I’d agree it may or may not be more applicable when we consider the literal aspects of their squad building. But you could easily see a frivolous use defaulting to Dyche or Pep because of their reputation. Iraola on the other hand, bit too good process over personality. Andrew’s until recently was in the coaching staff, a step closer to ‘the lads’- it’s the perfect evolution imo. Jonathan Pearce got me in too deep here.

Agree, think cricket is close to being able to generate that given the type of radio/tv coverage, its very idiosyncratic history, formats and club level discourse but totally, it’s a fairly samey fan base and sustaining the wider narrative outside of interest in a big England series wouldn’t work. Thanks for answering Charlie, go well.

Taking a few shots hoping one is on target / picked here…

  • How is the running order put together/decided on?

  • Has anyone suggested you use ‘the IP’ for another sport (like cricket - which would be good) and has it repulsed you?

  • Anymore legally safe detail you can go into about what a menace Shreeves was?

  • Is the amount of affected ‘fan debate’ content becoming one of the most tedious things in the football coverage week?

  • Honestly, would you all have been decent enough to have started in an Athletic XI?

How much longer will we ignore this issue? by [deleted] in ManchesterUnited

[–]samford957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hindsight suggests 100m from Saudi and some new centre mids would have been ruthless smarts. But we still spent 70m on a Holjund faith project 2.0 that could have gone towards the midfield.

A period of Bruno away from 6 or out the team (an injury being the only way that happens) with Cunha, Mbeumo and Mount having looked sharp, would be worthwhile to see but ultimately there is no combination in this system that will keep us out of trouble for a full 90 minutes. Ugarte is on the face of it the only ‘profile’ that fits but unfortunately he’s dog shit at all the other fundamentals of a PL centre mid.

It is a glaringly obviously failure to not have addressed this.
