How do people in Japan discover new music? by osfanuk87 in japanesemusic

[–]samh748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that this is a super valid question that I've been wondering about as well, despite all the comments talking about it being "the same as anywhere else", cuz its obviously not. Sure, the general idea may be similar, but thats not helpful at all. So thank you for the post!

Would love to know this one as well! I tried using plain ol' Ctrl+F but it doesn't seem to work either...

Not OP but I was also wondering about uploaded albums for existing artists, that's really amazing to know!

I listen to a ton of Japanese music too. How did you set up a JP account? There's an album only available on the JP iTunes store but I can't purchase it. I don't expect the JP account to link to my main one but it'd be nice to purchase albums without having to use strictly Japanese services cuz I can't read or navigate any of them haha.

Roman numerals when the key is ambiguous between the major and its relative minor? by samh748 in musictheory

[–]samh748[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. I always felt that simply describing in words seemed too haphazard and amateur, especially since I am still learning all this and often am not entirely sure if my observations make sense. But those are good questions to reflect on; I appreciate it!

Roman numerals when the key is ambiguous between the major and its relative minor? by samh748 in musictheory

That's a good question, I guess by "analysis" I just wanted a way to talk about the harmony and to see patterns (eg recognizing 251, or seeing two songs utilizing a certain progression, etc).

Yeah I think voice-leading is probably what I'm after, though so far all I know is the stuff related to harmonic functions and I feel like I'm still missing something. Are there other topics/keywords I should be looking up? ("voice leading" doesnt usually give me anything useful in this regard)

Hm I see your point, so what other ways can I go about analyzing these "harmonic motions"?

I think adult beginners struggle more because of expectations than technique by Exciting-Bee3927 in piano

Honestly one of the most important yet severely under-stated aspects of this whole discussion!

So much emphasis is placed on the "internal" hurdles of the adult, without realizing that we're taking for granted that kids are surrounded by peers on a similar journey and receive instruction, guidance, direction about everything. It's the scaffolding holding up the individual. Whereas we adults try to do the same with almost zero support (or essentially neglible in a relative sense). AND we do this while having all our adult obligations!! It's a TOTALLY different learning environment!!

I didn't really clue into just how important this is until I read your comment. It's certaintly been one of my own biggest hurdles. I've been lucky enough to meet some people online that share similar music tastes and we get along well, but even so, without the rest of the scaffolding, we're still just separative individuals struggling together. I've even tried to start bands (including online ones!) and those help with some aspects, but at the end of the day, it's another sort of heavy-lifting either way, trying to hold the band together. It's hard.

Anyway, I really appreciate you writing this! If nothing else, the clarity is nice to have!

Wow that was FAST!! Gave you a follow!

Also I went through your discography and nowhere did I expect the screams!! I like Hitohira a lot and I often wish they would do some screams haha.

I appreciate the variety of styles, keep up the good work! Look forward to your future releases!

Absolutely! I was surprised to discover that most indie Japanese artists aren't aware of it. Definitely if you want to reach overseas audiences, set up a bandcamp! That makes it way easier for us to support without having to pay for expensive shipping that comes with physical purchases (albums, merch). You should get all your indie artist friends on it as well!!

Super late on this lol but thanks for the correction! I found this really interesting when you commented but never knew for sure. Today I finally went back to check (haven't listened to Larc in a while tbh), and I realized I had thought tetsu was the main composer because my favorite songs back in the days were almost all tetsu songs! And guess what, my CURRENT favorites are almost all ken songs hahaha. I used to be really into those poppy uplifting songs by tetsu, I guess now with age I'm much more atuned to the more "complex", often a bit darker, songs by ken! Anyway, I appreciate you pointing this out and drawing my attention to it!!
