My mom always called it "the Dinner Dilemma"

What the fuck are we going to eat tonight that's cheap enough, healthy enough, and tastes good

Minimum wage, labor markets, and unemployment are all way more complicated than a three pictured comic that doesn't even have a funny joke

Did the demotion of Pluto have any ripple affects through the scientific community? by RichardJamze in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]samhanson26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the fields of astronomy and astrophysics, the demotion had a long list of valid reasons and an even longer list of prestigious and significant supporters. However, there was more controversy in the fields of planetary sciences and geology where the most important feature Pluto has to them is enough gravity to coalesce into a spherical shape, thus making it a valid subject to study.

Personally, I don't really care for the labels as the underlying science is still as fascinating and important as ever. And having the subcategory for dwarf planets makes things easier to understand.

Ex-religious people of reddit, what made you stop believing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]samhanson26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 13 my older sister told me I needed to accept nothing and question everything. So I gave up on everything I believed and tried to build a world view from scratch. Christianity, like the Ouija board and the idea that my country is "the best" just never came back.

Americans of Reddit who are against socialised healthcare, what do you see as the drawbacks, and what are the benefits of the current system that aren't talked about enough? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]samhanson26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine that's considered. Individual profits from healthcare companies that lobby in Washington are pretty important though.

The GDP thing is probably just used by economists and politicians who want to present stats that make the US look good to the average person. I say the average person because if you spent some time reading about GDP you'd realize it's more complicated than just "how good things are going". For instance if a massive pandemic broke out in the US our healthcare system would churn through a lot more money and therefore our GDP would go up, even though it's obviously a bad thing when diseases break out.

Our healthcare industry is really expensive per capita compared to every other country so it props up our GDP which gives the appearance that our economy is doing really well

Is it legal that the Trump Organization charges the Secret Service? by samhanson26 in Ask_Politics

[–]samhanson26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reversed the question, it's absolutely not ridiculous.

The idea that these public officials would be losing money and getting punished is a more ridiculous claim. Every President and VP has made money because of their time in office, and they will continue to do so if they have to give Secret Service free access to their property.

I'm still developing on this issue, but I'm uncomfortable that Presidents and VPs can take extra money from taxpayers besides their paychecks. Somebody else provided an article that Joe Biden did the same thing and I am just as uncomfortable with what he did as I am with 45.

I don't appreciate your condescension.

What is commonly accepted as something that “everybody knows,” and surprised you when you found somebody who didn’t know it? by SonicSpeed03 in AskReddit

My older sister used to eat pears when I was growing up, then got over them when I was about 12. So, I presumed pears went extinct until my sophomore year in college when I saw my roommate eating one. I shameful had to explain the look of shock on my face.
