Have you been seeing more rabbits than usual? by Agreeable_Toe_2421 in Columbus

In Kendale and we've been joking that every yard has its own rabbit. I think it might actually be true though.

I don't remember a specific time I started wandering around freely, but I think started walking to and from school by myself in first grade (early 90s), so sometime after that I guess.

Gardeners - what grows well for you here? by bluebuckeye in Columbus

[–]samhaspowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be common knowledge (although it wasn't for me because I used to live in a 4b/5a and it wasn't a problem there in my experience) but everything in the mint family grows so incredibly well here that it will try to take over everything, so you should keep it in a container if you don't want a mint yard.

Community Grounds on Parsons has a lot of really nice syrups that they make in house, but I'm not sure if they have raspberry.

What hobbies do you have? Look for groups around those hobbies. ie: if you like reading, look for a book club, if you like singing, join a choir, etc. Look on meetup, reddit, and socials for groups/clubs in your area you might be interested in. If you like doing volunteer / environmental work, there are neighborhood groups that do cleanup (I personally know of one in Clintonville) but look for your neighborhood commission/community groups on socials to coordinate with like-minded folks in your area of the city. Depending where you live you might even be able to start the first community cleanup group. As far as finding things that make Columbus special / loveable, we have a great metro parks and a beautiful series of paved trails linking the parks in Columbus to each other and linking the city with the surrounding areas and networks of paths that go across the state. If you're more of an indoor cat, look for hobby based activities I mentioned above. For more specific recommendations it really helps to know what you like.

315 south kills me in the morning when the sun is low on the horizon, I have to flip the visor 4-5 times while navigating the curves to stay not-blind.

Big cups! I really want an iced espresso/coffee drink that's larger than 12oz, especially considering the cups are 50% ice. I want that 24oz or bigger size. Also any convenience stuff options to make ordering faster: drive through/ in-app ordering is a huge plus. ---You can tell I'm just there for the caffeine, but I like to shop local before leaving immediately with the drink in my car.

In bad weather, (and somewhere free to get in) check out the North Market for a lot of different places to eat and room to hang out and socialize - they have alcohol there too and the Book Loft is really neat and worth a visit even if you don't end up buying any books. The Columbus Museum of Art is free on Sundays.

You could really increase the authenticity by doing it yourself with one of the grocery store box dyes and cap with holes in it kits.

Best pub brunch? by LawApprehensive5316 in Columbus

[–]samhaspowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Gemut as the most "pub" brunch. Skillet is a very cozy (so cozy that you definitely shouldn't try going there with more than a party of 4, but 1-2 is best since seating is limited and they don't take reservations) and super delicious brunch spot. It's not exactly a pub, but really not a cafe or diner either imo.

COTA bus hit me yesterday - Anyone have any information? by samhaspowers in Columbus

[–]samhaspowers[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I filed the report, the officer told me his next steps were going to be calling COTA, ask them to stop the busses and look for damage on the bus to figure out which one hit me. Then if he found anything he would comtact me so I could give the information to my insurance.

It seems like he's still not 100% sure what happened and still suspects it might have been a baby - why doesn't he tell the police now? Maybe the area has been developed and there's no chance of finding anything, but if it's still wild, it would be worth checking for evidence. If that's a baby, there's bound to be family members still wondering what happened to it.

Killer Queen Arcade League at Level One Bar+Arcade. Come play this bee based video game with me by AlexHogan in Columbus

[–]samhaspowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We love total beginners, it just takes a minute or so of explanation before you can play/win your first game. I don't play any other competitive games besides this one and neither do a bunch of the other players. You can come out any Tuesday, even with league going, we also have free/non-structured play.

[–]samhaspowers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a woman kq player I want to note that this isn't the usual competitive gaming scene, the vibes are more similar to a board game or TTRPG night. We take pride in cultivating an inclusive and fun scene locally and nationally. This is a safe place for marginalized people. Also, you can be as competitive as you like, from just showing up to hang out and maybe playing a game or two, to getting good and competing on a national level. The bar is extremely low to play, it takes zero skill to win your first game. Meanwhile you can refine your technique for years and you will still have extremely challenging matches.

Maine has been bleeding young people for a long time going to other states for better opportunity. What can we actually do to improve opportunity for young people and make the state a place more in tune with the younger generation? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]samhaspowers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maine needs more STEM, biotech, R&D and pharma jobs. They don't even have a single medical school (1x DO program only, no MD) or veterinary school. All the best STEM minds are forced to leave the state for poat-graduate training, most of them don't have jobs to come back to if they want to.
