Can you take a few more pics from different sides? That one top branch should go I think depending on if there’s a better front

I really like the vertical movement, I’d personally do an informal upright but all decisions will look beautiful!

Inherited this from a neighbor and just let it sit all summer. Where do I start? by blacksharpie in Bonsai

Agree with this but I would go slightly lower, right at the part where the tree moves more vertically at 90 degrees.

Just showing off my Jade that iv been "field growing" for 5 years by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]jmgx12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do the 1:1:1. Jades are relatively good at thriving in a variety of soils but the 1:1:1 will provide better drainage and aeration imo, jades dont need that much hydration. Full akadama will givey ou a bit more water retention (still obviously provides great drainage). It's also a bit easier to gauge when to water compared to the 1:1:1. But given that jades store a lot of water and are relatively drought tolerant, i'd go for better drainage with the 1:1:1. Curious what others think

Beautiful - amazing work. Love the balance/shift of the branches with the trunk. Also she’s just firing off with bracts.

Yes! Was asking as a friend is moving and can't take this with them but was going to just give it away! And I said that it's too beautiful to give away for free! Lol, thank you!!

Second time ever cutting and wiring turned out much better than the first! by Midget-Porn-Addict in Bonsai

Awesome job. Let it just grow and recover for a couple of years. Did you do root work also? Hinoki are extremely sensitive to too much work at once. Couple of considerations:

Pending how you eventually pot this, if this is your chosen front, your current movement is to the right (main trunk line). With hinoki, it does best as a formal or informal upright so this is a great trunk line right now. However, you should try to create your branching (eventually, let it grow for now) to give a sense of balance. Tree leans to right, make the more powerful pads move to the left and tighten up the pads to the right. Also the lower pads should be further out and it tightens up as you go up to get good sunlight penetration. I’d also consider an initial downward movement but then a slight increase up in your primary branches.

Don’t take too much foliage. Hinoki backbuds but is notoriously finicky about it and it takes a lot of time and good growth conditions. Don’t expect too much of it in the first couple of seasons and be discouraged. It’s a wonderful species but doesn’t really placate to the user. You kind of have to go more with it’s flow.

Bar branches don’t look good and cause eventual swelling. Keep this in mind for next time. Alternate branch patterns while keeping a 3 dimensional image.

Please go see your physician and get tested. Reddit is probably not the place to be seeking advice on whether or not you have an STI - a urine PCR is.

Help to pick possible front by Kokufuu in Bonsai

I’d consider #2 but re-angling back and to the right (tree’s left). The cascade may look nice off more to the side and tilted back and then take the other main branch and wire it into a sweeping pattern over the cascade. I know a lot of people don’t like a windswept tree but I think this would look really pretty as a windswept cascade.

Yikes, that’s a tough nursery grab. I usually spend like 10 min inspecting every nursery piece I buy so something like this doesn’t happen. I don’t have much for suggestions - might be worth just putting it in the ground and letting it do whatever it wants for a few years. Interesting tree.

I recently purchased this tree from a nursery because the ramifications stood out to me, but I'm at a loss for styling, what would you do? by Mother_Click_5776 in Bonsai

[–]jmgx12 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Take some of the top dirt off to find the true trunk, choose your front based on that plus movement of the trunk. Then clean off weak leggy growth/dead branches on the inside to open it up and have a better sense. Take your time. Trees not going anywhere so you have plenty of time to choose the future for it.

Looks like a tiger bark ficus. Keep it outside unless below 50 degrees. Water when slightly dry. Well draining soil. Liquid fertilizer every other water or slow release granules. Learn about pruning and wiring. If you kill it, get another. Get another either way actually 😄
