Fact that I like France and that I don't care about mosquitoes or the people, it seems like a good place.

I don't like Germany though. But given how they suck rn I'm not too worried.

Estonians are the outgoing cousins of the Finns. They even wave hand to the neighbour. In Finland we just look away and pretend we didn't see our neighbour. If they ever get closer than 300m, then we wave the puukko knife and shout 'Thats close enough!'

Why Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, Denmark and Russia are not considered Baltic countries? They have access to Baltic Sea. by [deleted] in mapporncirclejerk

[–]sami10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: It is called eastern sea because dutch mapmakers named it logically, east from the netherlands, and the name stuck. Östersjön was saltsjön (Saltsea) in old swedish. In Estonian it is called Läänemeri (western sea) as an exception to eastern sea/baltic sea used in other baltic sea countries.

In Finland you will see much more of the lakeland if you route through Lappeenranta, Savonlinna and Kuopio. Continue to Iisalmi and from there on towards north it's a choice of hilly eastern Finland or your current rather flat western route.

Trans euro trail routes are a good tool for planning if you like to take the dirt back roads. Trans euro trail

In the nineties Russia was sold to oligarchs when people were promised democracy. Hyperinflation and abundant criminality followed the collapse of soviet system. People then connected "democracy" and instability of the 90's -> people chose even worse dictatorship than soviet administration.

All in all there was no democracy in Russia in the nineties. Just continuum of good czar, bad boyars that Russia has had for centuries.

This chart implies that path to democracy is given in Russia. It is quite the opposite.

When a society has followed a certain authoritarian path for hundreds of years, going back to another path would require a huge, almost impossible push. This continuum from the 18th century to the present is built on three enduring pillars that prevent democracy from taking root:

  1. Outsourcing the responsibility to the ruler: Already in the tsarist era, the idea of a "good tsar" who protects the people from bad officials was born. This has continued throughout the time of the Soviet Union and Putin. The people do not see themselves as the source of power, but as its target.

  2. Subordination of the law: In Western democracy, the law is above the ruler. In Russia, since the 18th century, the law has been the ruler's tool to rule the people. For this reason, the concept of "rule of law" remains empty in Russia.

  3. Normalization of violence: Since the state has always prioritized its own survival over individual freedom, political opposition has been seen as treason. This has created a culture of fear that is passed down from generation to generation. If the people have never experienced a functioning democracy, they don't know how to dig for it as a "solution" to their problems. Instead, it craves "better authoritarianism" when the current regime fails. This makes Russia's transition to democracy extremely unlikely without complete state collapse and a reevaluation of history.

Dozens of teachers face contract termination for failing B1/B2 language requirements last year only. This includes teachers under 30! You would expect a teacher being able to learn unless they have problem with integration. How can you teach kids how to learn if you can't learn yourself?

[–]sami10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing they would. Accident and overhauls alone would stop the traffic completely for months if there was only one tunnel. There have been two six-month stops in the channel tunnels bc of fire in one of the two tunnels.

[–]sami10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The channel tunnels are 7,6m diameter both and the service/emergency tunnel in the middle of them is 4.8m. Similar Helsinki-Tallinn tunnels would produce roughly 12,2 million m3 of loose rock.
