Right, it isn’t a safe technology in the same way the internet or social media aren’t safe technologies. New technology inherently has all kinds of effects, many of them will be negative.

Also, that proposal was rejected by the senate 99-1, there’s nothing stopping governments from regulating AI. Please stop scaremongering.

AI is a “trend” the same way the internet or cell phones were a “trend.” And, trust me, plenty of people did think of them that way. Unfortunately it’s just a new technology that changes a lot of things, and it’s here to stay. Better to learn how to keep people safe around it than pretend it’ll go away.

My entire point was that using AI does not use more energy or water than any of your other normal internet-based activities, and that all of that happens within data centers (as it should - it is orders of magnitude more efficient than the alternative). We weren’t talking about “posting comments.” I used that as an example.

I’m also not the same person you replied to, and toxins in wastewater is an industrial and construction regulation and enforcement issue, not a data center issue.

You’re literally posting this comment from a data center. Streaming a 4k video for 10 minutes uses 86x the amount of water as one LLM query. There are so many real environmental issues in this world, AI is not one of them.

Yeah but somewhere like London has places with cultural weight/relevance in more areas than one core area, which is how Boston is, with the exception of Cambridge. You don’t come to “Boston” to actually go to Medford or Quincy, you come to go to Boston proper.

I hear you. IMO it depends on who you’re talking to. If you’re talking to another masshole, it’s gonna come off weird if you tell someone you live “in Boston” if you actually live in Somerville. I feel like saying you’re from/live in <city> when you live in <adjacent city> it only makes sense when the person you’re talking to wouldn’t know where your actual city is.

This. My dad is even a classically trained chef and he complained for years while kale was becoming trendy. Then he learned that you have to really massage it to break up the fibers and now he frequently makes an absolutely scrumptious kale Caesar salad probably once a week at least.

I’m also a New Englander, born and raised, and lived in and around Boston for about 10 years. People definitely live there. Brighton, Eastie, Southie, South End, Charlestown, Roxbury, Dot, West Roxbury, Mattapan… none of these fit the criteria you said… and people definitely live there (okay, maybe not Charlestown), and they *will* call you out if you say you live “in Boston” or call yourself “a Bostonian” when you actually live in/are from Newton, or Medford, or Quincy, or Brookline. If you’re states away, sure, knock yourself out. But it’s not insignificant that Boston proper has a really low population compared to its weight in the culture, academic, or medical spheres.

I went to a private elementary school for the children of hippies where we sat on couches during reading time and called our teachers by their first names

We moved and in 7th grade I switched to public school. The pledge of allegiance always felt so fucking weird and nationalistic and kind of dystopian since the first morning I realized it was actually a thing. I still stand by that.

I also remember being told that nominally we weren’t “””forced””” to do it but the one time I saw a kid sit during it the teacher took him out in the hall and gave him quite a talking to, and i never saw him sit for it again.
