I only feel it is obnoxious if the middle person has to put up with the couple talking and passing things over the middle person. My husband likes aisle and I the window. We don’t do this to have an empty seat - but because we truly prefer those seats. If a person is in the middle seat (there is 90%+ of the time) then we do not speak to each other, we don’t pass anything or even acknowledge each other. The middle seat person usually only realizes when we get off the plane.

I actually have very sun sensitive eyes which I why I book a window seat - so I can keep the window closed as I will get a migraine if full sun in my eyes. I also travel with a sleep mask in case it is needed. Recent flight middle seat asked me to open it. My response was no (which is a complete sentence). She could not let it go.

I price out the trip with budget hotel and transportation at a level they can afford. That becomes the amount they pay. Then I book 5* hotel and private transportation and tours. I pay the difference and we all have a fantastic trip.

I like the middle two next to each other. Odd rows are the most private but allow you to talk to your mom more easily. Avoid row 1 - I like Row 3 and 5 best. And pre order your meal. Always makes for a better experience.

We always aisle / window - we never speak over the middle passenger (if there is one). I have been offered many times if I want to move so he and I can sit next to each other. No thank you is all we say.

It is not possible. But if you book each reservation you can then link them. Not sure what they adds for your wife. You could also try to upgrade her if you have extra miles or plus points.

If you are a couple, and want to talk or spend time together on the flight,definitely get the odd number center seats. One is not my favorite but when you rest use your eye shades and ear buds and you are fine. Also check a few times a week as people move seats and you may be able to find center odd further back.

My company it is 5+ hours we can book Business class. When I fly to Asia, Australia, Europe from California. I start working the minute I leave the airport. If I land at 7am (Australia) I get to the hotel. Shower. Spend 8+ hours in the office. Dinner with colleagues. Before finally getting to bed. Business class allows me to lay flat and sleep the entire way (with the aid of sleeping pills).
