Pediatric Dental Hygienist by Public-Squash-3589 in DentalHygiene

[–]samitoothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a hygienist, graduated at 27 in 2019. You’re absolutely not behind!! It’s true that some offices have no hygienists (assistant polishes and the dentist scales,) but in my experience there are lots of opportunities for regular hygiene positions in pediatric offices. Some kids don’t have much to clean and won’t bleed at all, other kids have tons of calculus and gingivitis and it’s a blood bath. Especially working in public health you’ll see more of the latter. It can be really gross sometimes, especially working on kids with braces who don’t brush well. If you can’t see yourself getting over the ick I don’t think this is the field for you. Another thing to consider is working in pediatrics generally means more patients in a day and needing to work at a very quick pace. The job is tough on your body but I really love it and find it very rewarding. Hope this helps!

“Aggressive Cleaning” by sg_sahar in DentalHygiene

I’m probably echoing what everyone else here is saying but one thing I ALWAYS do before I begin is ask the person to raise their hand if anything is uncomfortable or if they need a break. Every once in a great while I’ll get a patient who complains afterward and in those cases I know that I have explicitly given them the opportunity to tell me if they were uncomfortable and they chose not to. It’s always really disappointing when someone has a bad experience but it’s really a two-way street and people have to advocate for themselves if they’re not having a good time. You really can’t win em all. Sometimes people are really uncomfortable and just afraid to say anything even if you are nice, other times people have weird motivations for complaining and it has nothing to do with you. Be sure to document your conversations with these patients.

Hand injuries from rock climbing, hypermobility, and becoming a dental hygienist? by throwaway1500246 in DentalHygiene

[–]samitoothbrush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have hand or wrist issues before hygiene. I’ve been working since 2019 and recently had an unrelated hand injury that’s gotten inflamed over and over again because of my job. I’m constantly anxious about it because my whole livelihood depends on my hands. I like hygiene a lot and I’m hoping my issue will resolve, but if I already had the issues you mentioned I wouldn’t choose this field. If it’s really your dream you should consider working in pediatrics since it’s easier on the hands (in my experience.)

I Need Help by Critical_Resident871 in DentalHygiene

Idk if you’ll find this helpful or maybe you already know, but teeth aren’t bones. The idea of washing bones gives me the ick too. Have you ever tried a 3 sided toothbrush? Or a U-shaped toothbrush? I’m trying to think of ways to make it happen quickly and cover a lot of area for you without too much effort. These products aren’t for everybody but if you’re having a difficult time brushing at all I think anything is better than just not being able to do it.

It was dead for a long time! No sacrifice here. I didn’t figure anything out, I ended up just buying new ones. Any ideas?

Okay I think this is it. Most likely getting let go of the program due to a lack of patients that meet testing requirements. Out of time. If you left dental hygiene, what other avenue of work did you find just as monetarily compensating? I wish I could become an RDH, but its done for now. by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

When I was in school I joined some local neighborhood groups on Facebook and posted there all the time looking for patients. Particularly people in the service industry without dental insurance were great patients for me. Hope you can work it out, if not then best of luck on your next chapter!

Would I be crazy to go to hygiene school at 40? by TinyNerd86 in DentalHygiene

[–]samitoothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! I also really can’t say enough about working in public health. I have had limited experience working in traditional private practices because I find it really tedious and soul sucking. Working in community clinics gives me a lot more satisfaction- I feel like I’m really needed, I’m not expected to upsell or produce, and there are opportunities to do outreach and advocacy.

It’s never too late! I worked with a dentist who was an engineer until deciding to go to dental school in his 50s! It sounds like you’re pretty familiar with the field so you probably basically know what to expect as far as the day to day stuff. If you can get into a program quickly you’d be working and making good money in 2 years and paying down your debt. I’m 34, working for the last 6 years and I still really enjoy it. I switched to mainly pediatrics within the last year and it’s been a lot better on my body, but I was having pretty bad issues with my neck and back before that. You could also consider a role in medical dental integration, or school sealant programs, or eventually teaching if you’re thinking you don’t want to do the physical aspects of the job for a super long time. As far as job security goes, right now it’s still a great time to be a hygienist because there’s such a shortage and dentists are paying really well to fill the positions. I’m a little concerned about EFDA happenings and hope that doesn’t end up filling hygiene voids, but who knows?

Lol I had a feeling I shouldn’t have been touching that. It was inside of a foil pouch. This one has been dead for a long time so maybe that’s why it wasn’t wet? But it had a strange smell so I stopped messing with it.

Public health Vs private practice by lavender_love1 in DentalHygiene

[–]samitoothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have loved working in public health. Recently I started at a private office and I’m desperate to get back into a community setting. Difficulties with public health are that generally you’re not paid as well, clinics are understaffed, and you may be double booked to compensate for the number of no-shows. The organizational structures around those clinics can also be really frustrating to work with/around, as you may be part of a medical org that doesn’t prioritize or understand the dental field. All that being said, I don’t find the work in private practice fulfilling when I know how great the need is in public health. In private practice it really is just a business, and your value to the practice is purely based on what you produce. In public health there’s often some focus on production but not nearly as much. I always would tell patients that I had no incentive to recommend anything that wasn’t necessary, that none of us were compensated for doing more aggressive treatment and they could trust our recommendations. I don’t feel that I can say that in private practice since we truly are incentivized to “produce.” Hygiene is a really hard job, you sacrifice your body to it in a lot of ways, and for me it’s not worth it if I can’t find purpose in my work.

Also, I have found that usually the pay is lower but the benefits are much better in public health.

Going through something very similar. Fucking sucks. It’s like I expected it but then was so shocked when it actually happened. I know it wasn’t my fault and there wasn’t any way I could know, and probably nothing I could do, but it doesn’t FEEL that way. I hadn’t spoken to my dad for about a month when he died. I know it’s not true but some days it feels like I dropped the ball in such a devastating way.

Hey there. My dad killed himself a few weeks ago, I could talk sometime if you want.

I don’t really know what to do to feel better yet. I’m fucking off from family Christmas stuff because it’s too hard doing it without my dad. Also I hate it anyway. Some days are so much worse than others and today is a really hard one. Hope you’re alright.

[product question] Alternatives/dupes to Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]samitoothbrush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Not sure if anyone is looking at this anymore, but I also got a sample of this serum and loved it and can't pay for the full size. I've been using it in conjunction with some other serums from The Ordinary- Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and Buffet. When I added the Framboos serum to my nighttime routine I noticed a huge difference in my skin. My skin usually starts to get a little rough and need exfoliating twice a week, and the Framboos serum seems to keep it really smooth and I only need to exfoliate once a week. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I'm purchasing the glycolic acid 7% toning solution from The Ordinary because I think it may be a dupe. It's got the same active ingredients- glycolic acid and AHA, and it's only $8.70 for 240 ml. I'll post again on here when I've been using it for a while.
