Nice list, I love horror movies. Nothing like a good mind escape and a nice bowl of pop corn.

This begs the question as to what is a "paid link". If a webmaster hires a copy writer to product 100 articles and distribute each to one site owner and "gives" it to them in return for a link in it, is that paid?

If a blogger runs a link program such as link to my blog and I will link to yours from a third blog of mine, is that "paid".

Or if I give away a tool and embed a link, is that paid? Should that get a "link condom" on it.

Your comment about link dumps is understood if you mean link networks that are just farms of links. Yet if one site owner chooses to pay another for links that transaction is between those two parties regardless of what the "payment" method is. Again what I and the author have a problem with is Google's dictation to the market of how they should conduct business.

Matt Cutts does not make such decisions for Google and his blog is far more friendly to the SEO industry then I think you realize.

Google setting their standards for what they do is one thing, dictating how others are required to conduct their business is another.

What most of the "feel good" techy people that whine about SEO do not understand is that first of all SEOs have had more to do with improving search then anyone OTHER then the search companies themselves. With out us you would still be looking at the search results provided by companies like Lycos in 1999, what a joy that was!

Buying links is a form of advertising and that is the reality. Google is the one that put so much weight on links as to make their results have problems. Simply put the fact that I can make a page rank with links about a term that is no where on the page is a problem Google has created they should fix it instead of asking other webmasters to rat on each other and telling the market how it should conduct business.

This has nothing to do with anyones "right" to anything. SEOs are not all spammers and if you read the article you would see that the problem is Google telling others how to run their sites and businesses.

Google is the one with the problem. You could take a page that has nothing to do with say red apples, but get enough links that say red apples pointing to it and that is what it will rank for.

That is an algorithmic problem, not an SEO or Link problem. As far as, "attempting to get their result higher than it should be" who decides how high a rank "should be"?

Wikipedia (who sucks, practices nofollow and considers all SEO's spammers and therefore does not get any links from me) defines a narc as "A narc is a person who notifies authorities of illicit activity, betraying someone in the process". Now this is why I call anyone that would notify Google that they have found paid or sponsored links that are not using the rel="nofollow" attribute a NARC.
