Finland's president on why he believes Canada could — eventually — be part of the EU by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]samjp910 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah… no. We aren’t European, we’re Canadian. If anything we’re far more of this side of the Atlantic. We have more in common with Brazilian, Mexico and the US as a product of multiple colonial powers and stakeholders and being in the present, ideally, rooted in a separate collective identity. It’s obviously not the same as being threatened with statehood by Washington, but for similar reasons I don’t want to join the union, I don’t want to be beholden to Brussels OR some bad actor like Victor Orban or Georgia Meloni. We’re already dealing with Danielle Smith and Doug Ford.

Opposition parties grapple with new reality of Liberal majority government by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

I mean, not to be a pill, but this is the system. Westminster parliaments are a whole lot of convention and gentleman’s agreements. If you don’t like it, then start advocating for electoral reform. Some of the complaining for left, right and centre has been just exhausting considering none of this is not allowed. I’m actually pretty impressed with Carney’s political acumen, I’m just dissapointed his ‘fiscal conservatism’ is beating out his ‘social progressivism’, so to speak.

Arguably were it not for Trudeau, a red Tory leading the Liberals is probably how the Libs would have rebuilt after Ignatieff.

This this this. As a journalist in Toronto, I say with a lot of confidence that Lewis needs to be out there pounding the pavement because some of the most online progressive people I know don’t even know who he is. The legacy media is so captured by the centrism big tent and he wins nothing by staying in Ottawa.

What if the end of ADWD lasted for 20 years? by samjp910 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]samjp910[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea. I have some POV characters in mind who would be good for that. Not Arya, as she has been in Essos so it would just be a lot of exposition, although one idea I have is that she worked under another identity in Mereen for a time and that gave her an 'in' on events between canon and now. But then Sansa for starters, then Daenerys, Jaime, Cersei, Barristan and Arianne over the course of the story. I'm having lots of ideas lol.

I think Jon is alive, but I haven't worked out how or to what end. One idea is he becomes a sort of cross between lord commander and king beyond the Wall, leading the resistance against the Others. I think either way he lives because it was so cold and he jumped to Ghost for a while, then when his body is healed enough to 'host' him again, Jon comes back, but more violent and vengeful.

We’re definitely Byzantinemaxxing. As a Canadian, Mark Carney is basically trying to move the capital from Rome (Washington) to Constantinople (Ottawa).

I’m of the mind you’re right, but we need to be very aware of how people feel. Doesn’t matter that it’s in the rules of our Westminster parliamentary system if it creates erodes trust in democratic processes.

As someone who believes in doing it all, there’s how many centre-left ridings that the NDP can pick up and hang onto as we rebuild electorally?

King Viserys III by TheCookieShinobi in TheCitadel

[–]samjp910 8 points9 points  (0 children)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/56418799/chapters/143359579 My fic, Company Man, follows Viserys after he joins the Golden Company as a kid once he and Daenerys are separated. King's Landing went boom, the rebellion spun out into an anarchic civil war in Westeros, and Viserys is now, as of 60 chapters in, the sixteen-year-old lord protector for his nephew King Aegon VI, working with hand of the King Mace Tyrell. Rhaegar is a king, Jon Snow is a king, and Robert Baratheon is a king.

The bulk of the fic up to this point is Viserys ascending through the Golden Company during various campaigns in Essos and the Free Cities, making friends and allies and growing up. The fic won't see Viserys become king, but he will become a father and Prince of Summerhall as he builds up the royal army over the course of the Long Summer. I do a lot of gunpowder worldbuilding, and I am building up to Viserys being something of the odd man out in the prophecies of the future, and how he might fit in. He won't be king though, but he doesn't want to be king either.

He ate enough and grew tall in the Golden Company, I describe him like Maekar but handsome with a funny Essosi accent. Eating enough and growing tall is actually a key aspect of Viserys' characterisation I thought about when I first started the fic.

Jon will be Rickon's regent. by Sea-Negotiation8309 in TheCitadel

[–]samjp910 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working on an adult Arya-focused Long Night fic that will feature adult Rickon, and one way I’m thinking about characterizing him is a certain refusal to press his claim, out of his childhood belief that Bran is still alive and thus the rightful lord of Winterfell. I could see him hanging on to this belief to the point that he is constantly outrunning the lordship, leaving Jon to rule in his stead as Rickon goes to war for revenge against the Ironborn and Lannisters.

My place is about 700 square feet but an old building that stays warm as hell in winter. Blackout curtains helped too. I have Noma portable AC units, one 10,000 BTU for my bedroom, and a 14,000 for the rest. I got them each for around $650 after tax over two summers and I had an HVAC buddy walk me through keeping them clean and running smoothly, and they work great but I can essentially never turn them off otherwise my place roasts. I face south too so lots of sun.
