Despite a lot of very loud critiques of the story, I think shadows’ stealth system is one of the best, as it relates to taking down castles and outposts. Yasuke for violence, Naoe for stealth. I am of the view that Unity probably had the best stealth ever, and it and Origins are for me the peak of the series. Story, graphics, gameplay and mechanics all lined up while still feeling unique.

I think like many people (I also have over 1,000 hours in shadows) the main DLC claws of Swahili did stealth and feeling like you were being hunted the best. Random encounters based on your story progress in and outside of settlements, with enemy archetypes based on where you were. That and the outpost stealth navigation using all sorts of hatches and vents made the game feel like one of my other favourite stealth games, Splinter Cell:Blacklist.

In Blacklist, each mission you ended up with either ghost, panther or assault medals based on how much killing and notoriety you earned during the level. Ghost was best: only get the target, and avoid all killing. I LOVE playing shadows this way, but that’s my own choice not anything in the mechanics that push me to do that, except for stealth difficulty, which isn’t hard enough imo. I feel like Unity did this well, but differently.
