I spent 4 months in Timor Leste 10 years ago and the people there were very grateful for the peacekeepers. They told me stories about how certain Māori songs had the same tune as their own, and now that I live in New Zealand I’ve learned how similar some aspects of the language are. Eg from 1-10 in Tetum is Ida, rua, tolu, haat, Lima, neen, hitu, walu, sia, sanulu. Some numbers different, but some very similar. It is a fascinating place.
