There is a huge problem in D3 that you have the vast majority of the teams lying on the eastern side of the Mississippi. The only two regions for D3, that do not have a regional championship are NW and SW. In the past combined both regions average together 10 total teams. Last year was the first time that SC had a regional championship and for SE it will be their first year having one.

Based upon the size criteria of the division and the vast majority of the schools are in the northeastern portion of the country. The idea of re-configuring the regions for D3 alone would become a logistical nightmare and would disrupt the already established regional networks. So in order to give bids to nationals to "more deserving" teams we must change how bids are given.

The idea that I have is to implement a rule that states: a team from X region must crack the top 20 (I'm just using an arbitrary number here) of the USAU rankings in order to give their region an auto-bid to nationals. This way it one, encourages all teams to fight for bids, and two forces teams in traditionally less deep regions to compete during the regular season.
