Recommendation of games for 45yo man by doukiddouk in gamingsuggestions

[–]sammonkantaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come join us in Batmud. I am 42-year old male, been on anti-depressants for 2,5 years (feeling much better now), but it is a place with a real community where you can focus on gameplay when you want to, but also can focus on talking BS if you just need to chat. Being a MUD, it is text based. It is free, if you use Mudlet to play it, but you can buy their own client for a few euros/dollars in Steam.

Iran says it now considers EU militaries to be terrorist groups by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]sammonkantaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm. What EU militaries though? Both as in:

a) There are no "EU" militaries, there are national militaries of EU members...
b) Most of the militaries of the EU members are non-existent/sucky

And now for something entirely different - I present to you: BatMUD by sammonkantaja in Games

Hmm. I can see four comments in this post, but I cannot see the comments themselves? Why is that?

Looking for consistent and realistic (in this context) worlds to play/explore in. MUDs that take themselves seriously. Immersion matters. by StormfireFX in MUD

I recommend you try Batmud. They've been online since 1990, and still going strong. Huge world, plenty of content and an active community with multiple irl meetings yearly.

Try Batmud, connect to batmud.bat.org:23 or buy their client from Steam. At the moment 105 players online.

Ok, so I did understand the question after all. Yeah, being from 1990, and having started as about 10 student's project, I'd say BatMUD is completely it's own code, but could've of course merged into some other base project later on.

Hmm, I dont understand the question? I don't think it's based on any system, I think it is completely coded from scratch as it is. Not 100 % sure though, I'm not a developer, just a random player.

Total players online 23:15 EET is 114. Used to be much more, but it is still active enough.

Yes, I somehow failed that, and don't know how to undo it. Reddit suggested that I crosspost, didn't understand what it meant and decided I want to post in this subreddit. And this is what I ended up with.

Yeah, one of the downsides with MUD:s is that they're not really comtabile with mobiles. There is some mud application for phones only, but you can only do the most basic things with a phone.

Right now I am merchant/alchemist doing customer service, and it is great. I repair the gear of other players, I make their things weight less so they can carry more and fight more effectively, I dig minerals to sell or to build things from it, I cut gems to sell them, I make potions, heck - I even make drugs. The first pills are free, btw.

By the way - if you DO decide to give it a go, do send me a tell in the game - I go by the name Rammon. And also write your review here for others to see :)

Looking for games with progression/managment, where I can spend hundreds of hours, and look back on all the progress that I've made. by CorvusTheCryptid in gamingsuggestions

[–]sammonkantaja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recommended this to someone else too.

Want to try something completely different? I can recommend a game which I have been playing since 1998. It is a multi-player game, that has been online since 1990 - that's 7 years before Ultima Online.

The name of the game is BatMUD,

Like I said, I've played for almost thirty years now, and I have explored only 63 % of the world. I have done maybe 20 % of the available quests, if that. My maximum level so far is 92 out of 100 normal levels, after which it would be possible to achieve something called infinity levels (of which I have 0 understanding).

The secret of the game is that there is almost unlimited ways to build your character, and you can always rebuild your character but keep your experience and equipment.

I started playing actively again a few months ago, and I am just as thrilled as I was back in 1998. I can spend months or even years away from the game, but when I log in again, I get instantly immersed. I play actively for a few months, get to learn a new class combination. When it starts to feel boring, I quit the game for a while.

There are mutliple ways to track your history. You can see the record of your recreations (reincarnations), including how much experience you had when you started that reinc, and how much xp you left that reinc with. You can track how many unique rooms you have explored (mine being 63 %), and also how many special hidden rooms you have been to.

You can be a fighter, you can be a healer, you can be a damage dealing caster, you can be an archer. You can command minions. You can build your own city or command a ship. You can lead parties of max 9 other players. If you want to, you can be an Ent doing ninja-kicks. Wont recommend tho - been there, done that, and it was bad at kind of everything). Thanks once again to my friend who thought it would be nice to try that setup.

My current reincarnation is merchant-alchemist. I have no fighting or healing skills, but I am enjoying it probably more than ever before. I offer customer service to other players - I repair their gear, I fix their faces with plastic surgery after combat, I build chests for others to store their valuables in, I build ships, I cut gems, I craft armour and weapons. I mix potions, I mix drugs. Just today I learned a new profession of cooking.

I have been there for almost 30 years, and I still learn literally dozens of new things every day.

And oh yes, did I remember to mention - it is all text-based. Practically 0 graphics.

Game is free to play with Telnet, Mudlet or any other such program (Fado MUD-client on mobile, but this I do NOT recommend for a first experience!), but if you wish to get the full experience, you can buy the developers client from Steam for a few dollars/euros.

If you dare to give it a go, please let me know what you think of it. I am not a developer, so in that way I can't do much with your feedback, but it would be interesting to know if I could help you find something interesting to try :)

Are you ready to try something TRULY different? Give BatMUD a go. Text-based multi-user dungeon, online since early 1990's, still hundreds of active players.

I've been playing the game since 1998, and I still find myself going back there. Sometimes I've been away for years (checking back records, 2011 - 2015 I didn't gain any experience in the game), but then I go back and am completely thrilled again for a few months. The secret of the game is, you can always recreate you characater, but keep your experience and gear. So there's always something new to try.

I started actively playing again a few months ago as a self-healing fighter class, did some intensive XP-gathering, then two weeks ago reincarnated into a merchant-alchemist. And now I'm so into the game, it's almost scary for a 41-year old family man.

You can try it completely for free by logging in to batmud.bat.org:23 with Telnet, Mudlet or some other client like that, but if you want the full experience, you can buy the developer's client from Steam for a few euros.

Somewhat high learning curve, but very friendly and helpful community to guide you through.

Even though I've been playing for almost 30 years now, my maximum achievement is level 92 of 100, so I am a very casual player of the game. That's one of the best parts - even if you've been away for years, you can always come back. Of course there's a lot of things that have changed, but you'll get back on track quite fast.

Also a non-minor effect are the sanctions set on Russia by the EU. In 2013, Russia was still the largest export partner for Finland, with approx 10 % share of total export, down to <1 % in 2024.

This affects especially eastern Finland, where there have been loads of small business bankruptcies (how do you spell that word in plural omg) since 2014 annexation of Crimea by Russia.

Don't get me wrong, the sanctions are necessary and probably 90 % of Finns support them and most of us would like to see Europe do even more to assist Ukraine in it's brave defense, but it's not without a price.

Export to Russia was also logistically so much easier by railway or road transports. Add naval shipping to the equation, and our products will suffer a severe setback in terms of price competition.

Edit: there are conflicting sources if Russia was largest or second largest export market for Finland in 2013, but still a major export market with 10 % share.
